Good review. I addressed some of the issues you mentioned. I put on YSS rear shocks and an Arrow muffler. The muffler made the ride better by reducing the unsprung weight. I changed my front blinkers to the Euro style for better looks. I changed out the levers to give me a little more leverage because braking requires a healthy squeeze. I still think the front forks are too stiff and really jolt you on bumps. I also had the seat contour changed to give me more room toward the back. I am 6’3”. I have 10k mileage on my bike with no issues. Very happy.

I love mine, 2020 Xmax bought new. +15,000 miles 😁
Tires‼️ waiting now on my third rear tire. Shops won’t repair them and the cost 125-170$ each. Plus 75 front 100$ rear, for labor. If I remove the wheel then the local tire shop will mount the tire for 25$. Oil changes come often and easy do your self. I ride anytime everywhere, don’t like gravel. Never rode a motorcycle. Bicycle for 40 years I ride it the same way. Honestly it’s like coasting downhill all the time, a beautiful ride. I weigh 240 and am averaging about 88 mpg😍.

    I have a Matte Blue 2021, I can't stop riding it.
I agree with your review at every point, but overall it's a great "big" scooter.
I don't mind the speed limiter at around 110mph (TCS off) I ride mine on so I don't have to worry about losing grip on the road, so 85mph is fine with me.
I probably won't go beyond 80 that much because I love the fuel efficiency on mine (about the same as yours).
I tend to ride a little hard so yes the MPG will go down a little bit, but not much.
At 400lbs it's a heavy scoot (motorcycle) but the weight helps with road handling decently.
I use my phone as a GPS and mounts on my left mirror (mirror mount is an alloy), it's not as useable as I would like, landscape blocks the gauge, but it's sufficient.
Pet peeves: gas cap (could be plastic), lights are a little low when riding at night and LED headlamps are a little dim (requires me to use high beam when no cars are around).
Handling is great, acceleration is sufficient, overtaking is a breeze when i need to, ride is fairly smooth, seat is fairly comfortable, why it isn't a mono-shock, I don't know why Yamaha ruled that out, but would've been nice.
    Aesthetically, it's a handsome bike.
I love the color matte blue (hate the finger prints-easily picks up smudges).
Other oncoming bikers think I'm riding a big bike so that's surprisingly entertaining.
I picked the bike for all the obvious reasons like you.
    Ride safe.

  • @bigmartin
    @bigmartin Před 2 lety +25

Excellent review, probably the best I’ve seen. Regarding the lights, yes they’re poor but I put that down to the scooter being mainly an urban commuter machine not requiring overly powerful lights, but I’d still prefer better too. At 6’1’’ I’ve learned to live with the windscreen at the lower level, I really should adjust it for a comparison (mines at 2021 scooter).. In design the US seems to be a little behind Europe in terms of those fugly turn signals and seat. Here in Europe (I’m in Ireland) the turn signals are integrated into the body work and look great, our seat is far nicer too. Not too many in matte here, mines a metallic silver. We’ve Michelin City Grips tyres here too.. After 35 yrs biking on all sorts of bikes I’m loving the Xmax. I traded down from a BMW R1200GS because with lock downs and running costs for commuting the big BMW didn’t make sense anymore, I thought I’d get bored with the Xmax but I’ve got it five months now and will never go back to a litre bike again, I love it.. Oh, the only thing which drives me nuts is that keyless fob. I hate it and would rather on an old ignition key.. Anyway didn’t intend to give a long winded reply, great video, 10/10.. Safe scootering

    • @motohound90

I own a 2021 xmax 300. Great scooter and enjoyable ride. Unfortunately the engine broke down last week, when trying to start it up just after leaving from work. The dealer told me today that one of the camshaft lockbolts came loose. Valves are still ok but the camshaft is damaged and needs to be replaced by a new one. Yamaha warranty fortunately but still a pitty that it broke down. Only 13400 km's driven. Dealer told me mine is the 2nd xmax with this issue in their workshop. When the camshaft is replaced, they will apply loctite on the lockbolts.
After repeating problems with the engine, yamaha offered a new replacement engine. Good waranty by yamaha fortunately, hope problems are over now 🤞

I have a 2018 model and I love it. One of the first things I did was get rid of the stock turn signals and install the European lights front and rear. I’ve done many other mods as well: replaced the horrid rear shocks, new fork springs, new exhaust system, high flow air filter, racing clutch and variator, racing belt, and larger sprocket at final drive. My 0 to 60 is down to just about six seconds flat. I also got rid of the Dunlops that it came with not realizing what terrible tires they are. Now running Michelin city grips, much better tires.

0-60 actually takes something like 9 secs …
Lovely bike but like you said.. the ergonomics of the floor board kinda suck for someone who has long legs… cuz of that i think, im getting terrible pain in the shoulder blade area (you might think why floor board position causes back pain, i dont know why) i get no pain with my feet dangling.
btw, if you ever wanted more space on your handlebar to mount things, you could change out the bar clamp to use a fatbar (like protaper or renthal). I will be changing mine hopefully to improve ergonomics and comfort. And yes, the rear shocks, actually the front too, sucks. Many in my country has changed em out for some Ohlins stuff.

I timed the 0-60 with GPS instead of speedo. The meter is off by 5mph but i do agree its more like 10 seconds atleast…the bike has gotten a bit faster after 1,000 miles.

Does a person need to know how to use a clutch in order to take the ride test? I HOPE NOT!! The whole reason why i want to ride, is because there are 150-300cc scooters out there that have no clutch, that can go highway speeds! To me thats what makes it exciting to want to ride a bike. A clutch is a huge turn off for me!
    >I do not want to learn how to use a clutch, and I do want my motorcycle endorsement!<
If a clutch is the only thing that existed on a bike, I would never be interested in wanting to ride. But the times have dramatically changed! Now there are so many CVT bikes that is becoming a very big category within the motorcycle arena. I have seen so many youtube videos, and there are a ton of new riders out there that want absolutely nothing to do with a clutch bike! And I’m the same way! Why would we want to take a test at the DMV on a 500cc clutch bike, when that is not even a bike that we are not interesting in owning!!!??
All I want is a scooter that is 150-300cc. And Honda & Yamaha has a lot of great options! In Minnesota, a scooter that size is considered an actual motorcycle. According to Minnesota laws. Which means I should be able to test on that scooter as well, in order to get my motorcycle endorsement.
Are the DMV laws out of date for new riders???
