Could Betelgeuse DESTROY Earth?

  • If Betelgeuse were to explode, creating a supernova, would it destroy Earth?
Betelgeuse is the second brightest star in the constellation Orion and it sparked excitement around the world when it began dimming noticeably in 2019.
The strange dimming caused some to believe the big event was close at hand. By February 2020, the star had lost more than two-thirds of its brightness and the change was visible even to the unaided eye.
Astrophysicists say we'd have to be within 50 light-years of a supernova for it to harm us, and Betelgeuse is over 500 light-years away.
And the strange dimming was caused by a cloud of hot gas, released by the star, that temporarily blocked some of the star’s light.

Blows my mind that it dimmed, but it actually would have happened 560ish years ago. Will the new space telescope be able to see it in present time? If not how close to present time can it see? Not sure if that even works that way, good video idea though.

Congratulations. I'm so glad this channel is growing so well, great to see a channel get the recognition they deserve. Can't wait to see where this channel goes from here .

wait so if it began dimming in 2019 then that means it was already dimmed and we are barley seeing it like that which gives a possibility of it being already exploded, but we haven’t seen it yet

Tbh i think it exploded 500 million years ago. So if we see a supernova it was from the past sorta like a time machine

    • @kallesirvio2695

If it had exploded 500 million years ago we would have seen it 499,999,338 years ago.

  • @leanthonywade6095

The reason why beetlejuice is dimming(in my theory) is because it has already exploded but it will take another 100,000 years to see the supernova thanks to the speed of light
