The Carolina Squat. Cali Lean. Tennessee Tilt. All names for the most controversial car trend since "Stance". One state wants to put an end to the trend of lifting the front end of pickup trucks. North Carolina house bill 692 is slated to make squatted trucks, and its probably gonna work. But how? I've got some questions about this bill. I don't think it's as simple as it appears.

In retrospect, I wish I used a full sized truck for our test, the results would have been more dramatic and reflected real world trends better, as squatted trucks are usually full sized. After reading your comments, it sounds like the headlights on these trucks have the biggest effect on other drivers, and do not sound like something I'd want to drive around.
If you want to track of HB 692's progress through the NC house legislature you can use this link right here: www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2021/H692
As of June 30th the bill was re-referred to the senate committee on rules and operations. I expect HB 692 to become law later this summer.

I agree but to the people who do like those pavement princesses,
I gotta say they aren’t the best looking thing out there, in Tennessee we have a thing in Pigeon Forge, called the Rod Run which is massive car show along the strip of the road. It’s been going on since the 70s.
Now being someone who enjoys classic cars and cruising around, I don’t mind what you do with your ride, your choice, but when your in a 85 Trans am with the windows down and t-tops out with your girlfriend, and there is a 2nd gen Dodge Ram squatted like a dog taking a dump with a straight pipe that’s just as obnoxiously loud as the junk rap music they blast through boat speakers, and headlights that are brighter than their owner, you tell me how you like it when the light turns green and they unload a ton of unburnt diesel into your car that you keep so nice, then you can tell me how much you like squatted trucks

I especially appreciate how they tested the handling, headlight angle, and visibility of oncoming traffic at night.
I think handling isn't a strong case, plenty of other mods mess with handling in a way that is detrimental to day to day driving. Its a "can of worms" argument IMO. The headlight note and night visibility are HUGE concerns though that I think are fantastic to bring up. The headlights would be BLINDING everyone in oncoming traffic which creates a dangerous situation for EVERYONE on the road. add to the the fact the headlights would be doing little of their job and its a recipe for disaster. Though you can adjust most headlights, I doubt the stock adjustments would be able to make up for the change in angle. Good points.
It's already illegal in most places to have your headlights out of adjustment.

And how when they were comparing visibility they were holding the camera all the way up by the windshield and above the dash which negates half the effect on visibility.

Always hated people who did this, because the headlights become high beams 24/7.
and it creates an absolutely massive front blind spot for the person driving the truck.
Aswell as your line of sight is absolutely horrendous.
Not to mention in a crash instead of utilizing crumple zones a squatted truck would just drive over a smaller car, especially a Miata.
@Team Trubbish and how the truck was initially, most trucks ride substantially higher than an old Tacoma.
@Glasspack40 Not 24/7 by just using normal low-beams they're not.

There's this, then also the headlights not being able to hit the road, the increased probability that a car rear ended by a squatted truck to go under the truck and crush occupants, and the increased chance for a role over are also important factors.
That's a danger with any lifted truck, but I don't see them outlawing those. Or banning motorcycles if safety is so much a concern to them.

Also, wouldn't the truck suffer oversteering very easily with a suspension like that?
One of the things you didn't touch on in the video is the possible effects on the handling of the truck. I can't imagine squatting a full sized truck wouldn't completely fuck up it's handling (especially in a potential accident situation). The only thing I can think of that would have made this test better is if you had filmed the view from the Miata or from behind the squatted truck. It may affect visibility of those trying to look around the truck as well.
I do have another 2 points to think of. Motorcycles. Motorcycles are fairly small and already hard to see. Also brake lights. Seeing brake lights easily and in plain view is an important safety concern.
Only time a truck should squat, is when it's hauling a heavy load.

I had a small block 72 mustang with big block springs and that sob was dangerous to drive til I got it fixed. Can't imagine these trucks are any better.
Keep in mind, it’s not just the visibility, when your bumpers are that far out of spec, you end up with a decapitation machine when you fail to see that Miata.
do you write movies for final destination? nice imagination. i would literally bet money that it would roll first. so many unknown variables tho speed angle of crash angle of wheels crumple zones weight of both vehicles each one of those changing would change the outcome plus so many more...

In Oklahoma if your lifted truck lights are higher than 4 feet you can be ticketed.....OHP focuses more on the lowered import cars than the big ass trucks though....
Squatted trucks are also a safety hazard because half of the time they are just thrown together, whistlindiesel also showed that on his channel, the first one had something in the suspension snap which could really cause some harm going down the road

Yeah if you clipped a barrier or something going fast it would be way easier to flip with a squatted truck. Definitely not safe.
Wouldn't be much of an impact depending on the car the truck was hitting. Lmao. A rear end fender bender could end up in a decapitation quite easily.

This was covered recently on Jalopnik. You lose forward visibility; you lose rearward visibility, your headlights shine into the sky.
The exact same look can be accomplished with hydraulics at a car show. You can reorient the truck with a flip of a switch and drive safely. When your sense of style affects the safety of everyone around you, it's the job of lawmakers to get involved.
Well said. Thank you!
@Adam you can work on multiple problems at the same time; particularly when one of them is more clear than the other. If we worked serially on problem solving, nothing would get addressed as different people (and thus representatives/politicians) have different priorities on what to fix first.
@Adam Sometimes you dont need hard stats. If theres an increase in risk (even without higher numbers of accidents) you can prohibit these car mods before something tragic happens.
The headlights are actually a big deal you don't think of right away.
As much as I would love to see squatted trucks made illegal I don’t agree with that line of reasoning because than it opens the door to anything being made illegal because it isn’t as safe, you want to put a lift on can’t anymore increased rollover risk and reduced handling, you want off road tires can’t do that anymore reduced handling and braking distance makes it more dangerous, you want to mod your engine can’t anymore cars with more hp statistically have higher crash ratings etc etc.
"That looks stupid, that looks dangerous & I hate it" is everybody's sentiments in NC. It just needs to go away lol

I'll try!
If something goes wrong with stancing it's more likely just a problem for the owner of the stanced car, aka the parts causing your wheels to have increased camber to give in to the forces and breaking off.
Stanced cars also tend to be smaller, lighter cars. Some people do it to their trucks to show off, but it's more popular as a trend on smaller, lighter cars.
Meanwhile, squatted trucks are more potent to be a problem for those around them, as you've proved yourself the short-range visibility is just not passing-grade, while short-range visibility is increasingly important as traffic gets more dense.
Squatted trucks also tend to be heavier. Big, heavy trucks mean more mass, so if an accident does occur, usually involving someone else due to sheer lack of short-range visibility, the victim is far more likely to suffer major injuries as one of the factors of impact force, mass, is a higher value.
And this is not even accounting for the issues with headlight alignment, which is a MAJOR safety hazard if done wrong.
Even if it's alleged data, if the likelihood of said data is sufficient, it's fair to use as empirical data, even if there's no recorded data to support it.
And then in the end the recorded data is completely different from the alleged precalculated data... and then scandals reach the light of day... so I guess truck squatters have some hope in the long run!

You know the rule - - two men enter, one man leaves . . . .
@SilentGhilly Ive witnessed a murder.
@SilentGhilly ok yea but see here the question you should be asking is not about a pump but rather is it getting enough fluid pumped through because the transmission wasn’t made to be on a permanent incline. The fluid passages and other parts were made to be pumped and lubricated on flat level ground with slight variation of incline not changing anything but when you push fluid away from the pump that pump might be running dry until the fluid can flow back down properly which it most likely doesn’t not to mention the extra stress you’re putting on your front suspension could literally kill you a accident above 45 mph has enough g force to snap your neck crack your spine or cause whiplash at best
You can run a trans dry if the the fluid level isn't high enough at the pickup tube.

Its not only NC. Plenty of SC trucks are squatted too. Unfortunately my brother is one of them. The main problem I see with them is many people who squat are ignorant and dont understand the potential, premature failure of front end components. When my brother bought his, it was already squatted. He constantly blew wheel bearings, snapped tie rods, and blew ball joints while going full speed down the road. Given they are a steering component, the tie rods could have potentially been the larges safety issue. We were constantly renting ball joint presses and tie rod removers (I was at tech for Automotive at the time) before I finally got the bullet and bought my own press and remover. I told him if he expected me to help him then, he needed to get the truck lifted correctly. He finally got a professional to install his lift in 2018 and aint blown one since.

Remember, the vehicles are not designed to take collisions at this elevated angle. You might as well remove the bumpers all together.
Exactly. I have seen enough safety crash video to know this is incredibly dangerous in a crash. It would miss the bumper of any standard car. It doesn’t take a genius to realize this. And using the “no hard data” argument here is SO stupid. Oof.
Nobody wants to get rear-ended by a truck that looks like its going up a ramp.
@@quarterarcade8825 to be fair most stock full size trucks are not going to it the bumper of a sedan.
This is also an argument to ban lifted trucks in general. A truck squatted 3" rear and lifted 3" front is (viewing angles) similar to a 6" lifted truck.
To your point of crash-worthiness, the issue is not that the bumper is whatever height above stock, but that the frame is now at an angle and crash forces will react unpredictably (or outside of design characteristics as physics can absolutely predict what would happen) in a crash. Instead of forces being transferred longitudinally down the frame, mostly being absorbed in the front quarter, it would now mostly force the truck up up onto the car. Incidently this is the same argument used to limit/ban lifts on trucks and impact HD truck designs (as they are naturally taller) to insure their bumpers are within a certain height requirement.
I'm in North Georgia and spend a decent amount of time in N.C. I've seen a bunch of these stupid looking trucks. Some definitely prevent seeing a small car directly in front but the worst part is having one behind you or coming at you at night. I've only seen them on the highways and in towns though. I do a lot of forest service road driving in my 4Runner Turd and I've never seen one of these off a paved road.
bill has been passed as of recently, I live in NC myself so the amount I see is absurd, some people go as far as needing to have a camera installed to see over the hood because its so bad.
To be fair, stock trucks are so ridiculously big now that they may soon be required to install front cameras to deal with their massive blind spots.

The 6inch lift in front and 6in lower in the rear is some what legitimate, but you didn't account for the laid back seat and fuzzy steering wheel covers. Plus it was a mid sized truck a full sized truck sits higher stock so with these mods the results would be different

The concern is smaller sedans and pedestrians walking right infront of the truck (like if the truck was first in line at a crosswalk). Yeah, I feel like that's something that was kind of ignored in the video
Recently came back to this video to rewatch after some deliberation. I feel like the test might exclude the style of squat that includes several inches of lift. While those extra inches of lift might have been outlawed by now, I would have liked to see results based on the massive f150s, 250s, and Ram 1500s with a 12 inch lift and a squat.
I agree. Full size trucks have much larger hoods. I had a 5th gen ram and the new gmc Sierra and both are much harder to see out of than a Tacoma.
I see it more as a safety issue in neighborhoods with small kids. Sure you saw a full sized person at 25 feet but a kid? The visibility drops off at 6 inches.
The biggest problem is that you used a pre-2005 Toyota, which have excellent forward visibility, even when lifted. The other issue which you are ignoring is that the squatted truck is not shining the headlamps downward to the ground, but at an upward angle, creating a set of hazards.
They originated when poor boys in NC and SC that couldn’t afford lift kits would crank the torsion bars up on their chevys to fit 33s on stock wheels. You didn’t have to do anything to the rear to fit 33s.

They wanted to mimic the trophy truck look where the front sits slightly higher to the rear. Idiots took the look to far in an attempt to 1 up the other guy by saying my truck is "squated" more than yours.
Here we go again with Heritage lol
It would be interesting to see a good study on these trucks. Off the top of my head logic would suggest that shifting the weight to the rear like that would change the center of gravity, aerodynamics, traction and handling. At speed I could see the front end being pushed up and with the weight shifted back the handling will suffer. Visibility is just the most obvious concern, I'd like to see a complete study of all the issues this suspension set up may have.
Soooo... here’s the thing. I grew up in Georgia. Recently i lived there again in 2018-2019, it is not done correctly there or in the Carolinas, from what I saw.
I’ve lived mostly in SoCal from 2006-2018, 2019-2021 I’ve had two Cali-lifted desert running trucks out here.
I admit, I didn’t perform the lifts, but I have enjoyed them a lot. When you see it done just for style, it just looks wrong, vs when it’s done for function.
I work as an ultralight test pilot and spend a lot of time off road in the desert with my pickup towing (and recovering) aircraft. I don’t HAVE to have the lift but it allows me to drive a bit more aggressively off road. Angle is barely noticeable in my six inch lift with the front slightly higher than the back. When I “land” with a mostly empty bed and a pretty heavy V8 the higher lift in front end makes a difference when I land a jump.
The Carolina squat... you can just look at it and see it’s done incorrectly.
Again, not a true car guy, can just see what works and what doesn’t, as form is dictated by function. If it doesn’t work for an intended purpose, don’t do it!
This is possibly the most diplomatic and level headed take I have seen so far on this topic.
