I own a Ford F-250 super çrew with a wench on the front, I actually need it for work or I would have a 150 crew cab as I do haul a boat and tote stuff in the back all the time, but need room for my family as I can't ride in most cars do to a back injury. Anyway, that thing is huge! If I park it the way I'm supposed to, it takes up 1 and a half parking places front to back. Finding parking for it is especially hard. I was at a Drs appointment the other day and they had really small spots, so I had to jump the curb and then back up to get it straightened out in the space. The person parked next to me, I didn't know they were still in their car when I started parking, not that it would have stopped me from doing what I had to, freaked out when they seen this giant diesel 4x4 extended cab truck with 36" tires and a tube steal brush guard with a giant wench hanging off the front, come up and jump over the curb right next to them. Their eyes where wide open as was their mouth and after I was done, they moved their car to a spot a few spaces down lololol. Sometimes they're fun that way lol.

@Donut Media - one thing you left out of the compact truck conversation was fuel economy. An extended cab Ranger with the V6 only managed 1MPG better than a crew-cab, 6ft box F150 with the largest 5.4L V8. Thus, it was a terrible value proposition.

So it's interesting, I recently-ish (last year) bought my first truck a 2010 f-150. Originally I wanted something more in the midsize category because a full size seemed like more truck than I really needed. But what I found when I started looking was mid size trucks are just as expensive if not more so than their full size counterparts, got the same crappy gas mileage (at least for the years I was looking at), could haul way less, and were really hard to find with the features I wanted (ability to seat 4 with some level of comfort and at least a 6 foot bed. Which ended up with me getting happily won over to the dark side.

Also maybe because of CAFE standards, trucks have become what were once the oversized and expensive caddies, Lincolns and Ford LTD's with huge engines prior to the early 1980's. Not that work trucks don't exist or that not currently counted in cafe standards now.

Seeing the numbers on truck use just is amazing. I'm always saying that not many people need as big of a vehicle as they have. And the statistics prove the point, buying a truck but not using it to haul/tow/etc. And even SUVs, I would hear so many people at the dealership I worked at say they are expecting or have one child so the sedan wouldn't work but that's exactly why the sedan was created! For small families! And yet so many people rush to SUVs and trucks, honestly I believe at least 85% of American vehicle owners could downgrade to a smaller vehicle with no problem. If you need anything bigger than a Tacoma size, then you really should be making money with your truck, other old diesel owners will know the strife of maintenance cost on large vehicles. As someone that has owned a few trucks and used and abused a few of the old compacts, I’ve found that the new 3/4, 1 ton, and the Ford 1 1/2 ton trucks are more of a status symbol. Go down to the local lakes and RV parks where these trucks have a tendency to live and the parks are full of $50,000 fifth wheels and $60,000+ trucks pulling them. All I need is an old 3/4 4x4 gasser to get the 3 cords of wood I need to the wood furnace and the two or three times I haul cows to town. But I barely managed to afford a 1996 2wd Ranger for my hauling duties because even the old gassers are outrageously priced. Wish an automaker would make an old school 3/4 and 1 ton for people who actually NEED a truck and it be between the 25k-30k mark. No auto locks, manual windows, rubber floors, and a bench seat. Donut Media, Thank you for putting out this video, and especially using that Strategic Vision survey which I too often quote. I also am very happy to see truly small trucks make a return.
So, I am one of those Honda Ridgeline owners that "Real Truck" owners surveyed by Strategic Vision love to hate on, first of a 2017 and as of October a new 2021. Heck, my dad, a lifetime Chevy 1/2 Ton driver, initially gave me heat on the 2017. These days, dad sings a different tune. Sure, he still buys 1/2 tons, including a new 2021 Silverado RST Z71 crew cab in August. What has changed is that since 2017 he has seen that much of what he does with his truck, mine kept up with. Park them side by side, they have the same ground clearance (well almost, 7.7" for the Honda, 8.01" for the Silverado). Look up their stock approach/breakover/departure angles, they are almost identical (actually mine are better as his breakover is ruined by the 4" tube running boards he added and I put larger tires on mine so in reality I have the same 8" ground clearance, too). Payload, same story for how his is equipped we are functionally identical at 1500lbs. He has the crew cab 5.5' box, I have a box that is only 2" shorter than his.
Now, the 2 items everyone discounts the Ridgeline for are off-roading and towing, which SV's survey shows most truck owners never or rarely do. To be fair, yes the Honda is not an off-road machine or the best capacity tower. Even then, as pointed out above for ground clearance and the angles, my dad's Z71 only has one feature that makes it more off-road ready than the Honda, being 4x4 with rear locker, not AWD. Yet, my dad doesn't go off-road (other than some rough gravel with little mud puddles my Honda handles just fine, as does my mom's Outback), he has the 4x4 for the Wisconsin winters, in which the AWD actually performs better since it is always active and can be used on dry pavement. As for the towing, he does not own a single trailer that I cannot also pull. Let's break down our combined largest towing items: 16' enclosed utility trailer for a Mahindra Max25 tractor, GVWR 4400lbs (dad's); 23' Lund boat with 200hp outboard, GVWR 4300lbs (dad's); 17' Coleman Lantern LT 17b camper, GVWR 3800lbs (mine), 18' Aluma trailer (mine) with 1 Honda Pioneer 1000 (mine) and 1 Polaris RZR 570 (dad's), about 4400lbs. So, again, between the 2 of us we have no trailers that the Honda cannot tow (also, I can load his RZR 570 into the bed of the Honda with ease).
When either of us wants to do serious off-roading, we use those 2 UTVs mentioned above, and we usually use my Honda to get them to the trails. Why, because my MPG towing the two UTVs is still the same as his when towing nothing, and mine rides better and is more maneuverable for parking at the trail head by virtue of being shorter. Another interesting thing: My insurance costs significantly less than his annually (both of us have perfect driving history, great credit, and the only insurance claims we have ever submitted were for deer accidents or hail storms). My dad once asked me what I would do if I ever needed to pull a trailer over 5000lbs. I told him that I would either borrow his Chevy, or (more likely) rent a half ton for a day. He asked why, and I pointed out that I could rent a half ton for 2 straight days for what I save in insurance annually vs his Chevy, and for a 5 if I combined annual gas and insurance savings. So why pay more every year on an off chance I "might" ever need more capability when I could pocket that money and simply rent or borrow a larger truck if the occasion ever presents itself? This same applies to the new Maverick and the Santa Cruz, and I hope both of them sell like hotcakes, further validating the unibody light truck market, and maybe getting people to buy sensibly. Heck, I would love for Dodge to make a new Durango-based Rampage truck, and for Subaru to revive the BRAT and Baja to really light this market up.
Also, that "But what if you need more capability someday" argument is such BS. Why? That same argument could be turned around on every truck owner. So, your crew cab seats 5, but what if you have a 4th kid? Just in case, you better get a 3 row SUV/CUV or a minivan. Oh, you got a crew cab with a 5.5' bed, what if you ever need an 8' bed, better buy a Crew Cab Long Box Super Duty. What if you need more ground clearance some day for a 1-time off-road trip? Better pass on that RST Z71 and get a Trail Boss or Raptor or Tremor. Your F150 tows 12k lbs, but if you ever need 13k? Better get a 3/4 ton Super Duty. If my needs ever permanently change, I will buy the appropriate vehicle then, until then I have a vehicle that meets my current needs and I can easily temporarily access more capability if temporarily needed. Don't buy on the what-ifs especially if they are really unlikely, find what you need (or want) and buy that, then leave the rest of us who did the same for ourselves alone!

Very well said! Bought a 2011 Ridge with 115K miles on it in 2015. Sold it to my boss at the 247K mark, it's still on the road. Pulled a 5,500 pound 21' bowrider boat and trailer a couple of times a week, zero problems. The in-bed trunk is a gem, as is the composite bed. 4WD got me up mountain roads in snow that full-size trucks couldn't navigate. Ever drove around a stuck Ram 4WD in a ditch, backed up, and pulled him out. Yes, he was VERY embarrassed that a Ridge pulled him out. Bought a 2018 GMC Canyon Denali new, towed that same boat. It could easily tow it, and handled deep snow like a champ. Folks discount mid-sizes without ever giving them a chance.
Did the Ridgeline have an independent suspension? Yes, as did the baddest offroad truck in history, the Lamborghini LM002!

I find it hilarious how the bed of most crew cab trucks appear to hold less than the bed of a compact of yesteryear. I've had to haul stuff for my dad in my Ram with a 6' 3" bed because the bed of his crew cab Silverado was a little too short. The truck really has become the family station wagon for a lot of people. And unlike most truck owners mine tows 1-2 times a week because I spend more time in my bass boat than I do my truck. I really do think the compact trucklets that have come back on the market are the perfect option for most truck owners and way more affordable too. Even midsize trucks have gotten out of hand on price if you add any options. Good thing I have a utilitarian mindset and am happy with the Tradesman trim level on my Ram. I does have the HEMI, carpet, cloth seats, and power windows, locks, and mirrors and that's all I wanted. I do think anyone who buys more than they can afford just because they HAVE to have all the bells and whistles and leather are idiots. If you can afford it then more power to you.

12:48 It might be a little unfair to say its the worlds most powerful pickup truck, considering that there's been a lot of 1000+hp pickups over the years. Also considering the cost to purchase a mammoth, I'm fairly confident we could build a much faster truck for a lot less money. (Mind you, it most definitely wouldn't be as fancy)
