5 BEST BAITFISH BASS LURES for Fall Bass Fishing

  • A big key to fall bass fishing is what is happening with the baitfish. Shad is a well-distributed type of baitfish, but you see the same thing with Smelt, minnows and other various types of forage where they migrate out of deep water, up the creeks and eventually get to the backs of the creeks and then migrate back out to the main lake in preparation for winter.
Jeff Sprague's 5 Key Fall Bass Fishing Lures include the following:
    1. Topwater walking bait:
    2. Jerkbait
    3. Lipless rattle bait
    4. Shallow crankbait
    5. Vibrating swim jig

    ● Strike King KVD 100 Jerkbait: wired2.fish/StrikeKing100Jerkbait
    ● Strike King Red Eye Shad: wired2.fish/RedEyeShad1
    ● Strike King KVD 1.5 Hard Knock Squarebill: wired2.fish/StikeKingSquarebill
    ● Strike King Thunder Cricket: wired2.fish/ThunderCricket1
Picking five lures that mimic baitfish, Jeff Sprague has settled on his staples for bass fishing in the fall months in Texas. But these baits work all over the country when the water is cooling and fish are moving shallow to feed heavily. He goes through each one thoroughly as to when and where he will fish each and how they make bass react in certain situations you will find all over the country in the fall.

99.9% of these type of videos (not saying just this channel...everywhere) focus on lakes with shad. I'd love to see more videos like this that focus on northern lakes that don't have shad...where the primary forage is bluegill/perch/crappie/craws.

I made one of those videos a month ago for that very reason! But it doesn't specify bait fish, just baits. Of course, you can interchange any bait fish and apply the same concepts.

That’s great if any of the lakes around you actually have shad in them. But up here where I live in New England there is little to none. I usually throw perch colors.

I'm in Connecticut. Blue gill color is my go to. Fall here is much different than down south. Our waters cool fast. Fall top water and jerk bait fishing dies off quick for me. Usually around November 1st. I'm really slowing down my techniques

Great information, I fish the CA delta and often I get stuck in the mode of trying to fish bluegill and crawfish patterns because they were working.....when the fall season arrives im still throwing those baits. I need to with to a bait fish pattern. You are clearly on point thanks for the content.

I’m in the same situation the Northern Lakes shad are nonexistent where I fish. So what is the tactic to target the natural forage that we deal with in the North East bluegills, perch, frogs and crappie.

    Im at Rend Lake currently.
Didn't get the kayak out due to the winds But I fished the dock/boat launch area. Seen tons of fish snatching food off the top yhen diving down and some would skim the top. Man, I tried everything from chad lures, minnows, worms, powerbait, crawfish, top water crickets, fly fishing gear, spinners with chad or minnows attached. NADA. Even had anchovies. Bunch feeding all around me but I caught nothing. Boaters pulled up to load up and they didn't get anything either thought they said they were trying to figure out their new depth/fish finder more yhan anything.

And that's the beauty of fish! Keeps us going to figure them out, but have the ability to humble us. Love the dedication -- you'll be rewarded with that kind of focus and experimentation.

They we recommend adjusting color patterns to best match the most prevalent forage types be it bluegill, perch, shiners, crappies, etc.

So obviously I agree, you will definitely catch fish with all these lures throughout fall. But the one lure that needs to be on this list is a fluke. All my best days in the fall have been on a fluke.
