      I am older than dirt and back when I was a young woman I carried a purse that was called a train case. Of course it was NOT a Louis Vuitton and about the only thing it had in common with this LV is that it had those hard sides that were made out of wood or some similar heavy material that could turn this bag into a lethal weapon.
      In the late 60's (I told you I am older than dirt) after our Christmas break. I was driving down Interstate 40 in Tennessee headed back to college in Nashville with my train case sitting on the front seat beside me. I hit some black ice and my car started rolling down the interstate and down an embankment. According to a truck driver who saw the accident my car rolled three times end over end. Every time my car flipped my train case would fall and whack me in the head. Car would flip again and train case would whack me in the head again.
      The truck driver rushed down to where my car had finally landed upside down and by the time he got there I had rolled the window down and crawled out and was sitting there staring dismally at my wrecked car. He was amazed that I had been in the car and was okay because he said he came down to pull bodies out of the car because he KNEW no one could survive that crash. I had no broken bones, no cuts, no sprains. The ONLY "injury" I had was a slight headache from being whacked so many times by the train case! This video just brought back a TON of memories!

    I think a lot of people have the mindset that we are in a disposable society, and that bag might have meaning to that woman. Maybe her father gave it to her or it was a gift from someone she loved and she wants to preserve it. There are lots of reasons why someone might want to restore something and we shouldn't judge people. For one, its helping Steves business, two, it saves the thing from a land fill, 3, it doesn't kill another cow. However you want to look at it, repairing and re-using something is a noble thing to do.

      I agree with you in totality ... however, people just don't know about cobblers and leatherworks due to their ignorance on the subject ... in most cities/towns ... you'd be hard pressed to even find a business, let alone a master craftsman who knows what the hell they're doing ...

    • @suzanneberrios4328
      @suzanneberrios4328 Před 5 lety +9

      Yes! I can only imagine the great places this case has been. It is a beautiful part of the owner's past and will now be part of their future (travels) as well 😊

    • @Liofa73
      @Liofa73 Před 5 lety +6

      traderjoes --- I agree in some respects, but you have to be mega-rich to be able to afford to buy such a bag or even restore it. To a lot of families the restoration cost alone is a months living costs. So some perspective needs to be afforded when considering how worthwhile restoring such an item is to society.

    • @Khamomil
      @Khamomil Před 5 lety +7

      I'm a knitter and you can be sure that I repair any item that needs it, considering the time it took to knit it in the first place, wheter it's a sweater, a pair of socks or anything else. And taking good care of a handknit item ensures that it will last as long as possible. The Japanese cherish and collect items of clothing that belonged to poor peasants and have been repaired and patched, they call this category of rags "boro", and now as a knitter I can understand the interest.

    • @Traderjoe
      @Traderjoe Před 5 lety +8

      Liofa It really then falls to how much an item means to you. There are sentimental values to things. Imagine if your mother or father had a bag that you always loved and they died and it became yours and imagine it was worn out over the years, but it meant something to them and therefore to you. If the cost of a new bag was $500 and the restoration cost $300, you might see it as an investment that is well worth it. Similarly, to a guy like Steve, he gets to practice his craft and let’s say you watch the video and you decide to look into restoring something. That alone is good for society because it means a new maker is born. There’s lots of ways of looking at things. Imagine if all manufacturing goes to China and nobody near you even considers it. I’ve reached out to people on Etsy to make me a custom bag and most of them either are too busy or don’t care. So I started watching these videos for ideas on what’s involved in making my own bag to my specifications.

    Originality versus going to the dump. Now that i've been following the channel a while, when i last went to the trash yard to dump mine, i saw at least two LV bags (at that point they were completely ruined, but weren't in such a state that an experienced leather man couldn't fix them before the dump) that had been dumped in the leather section. I think an older lady had passed since there were other leather bags too, just that the LVs caught my eye.

    You are so, very talented and those hands are magnificent with any project. My great aunt and uncle from NY handed me their well kept luggage pieces from when they travelled around the world. I still have some LV that’s seen a world of wonder. I’ve saved them only because I’m not into materialistic items. I cherish them because of the memories she shared with me for 20 years. One general rule instilled was: Hartmann luggage for travel in America. Louis Vuitton for world travel. Makes no difference to me now that I’m older. Most of my items stay in storage. I could die and whoever gets my storage is going to be one happy person!! PS-We were in Paris France (my wonderful spouse of 30+ years) and headed to London and my LV luggage did fall into the ocean by accident (Grand Princess Cruise ship) and NO WATER LEAKED IN!!! Amazing 😉

    You know you could work for Louis Vuitton. Your end product quality is just as good if not better than LV's original. They would hire you in a heartbeat.

    As I understand, there is a second-hand market for luxury and expensive things, things that make statements.
    I suppose, part of Steve's clients are the first owners, who want to restore the favorite pieces of wardrobe because the pieces hold centimental value - as a gift or as a first expensive thing bought by own money etc. Anyways, it is always better to salvage than throw it out.
    However, I do not see that super rich people restore their stuff. I am not saying frugality is a bad thing, even among the richest. I am just saying, that those items go down to charity, to the service people or to the second-hand auctions. Some buy this things, restore them and sell.
    There are a lot of people who want to have these kinds of things because they "shout" wealth and social status. They might be those whose status "demand" but they cannot afford, or to keep up with peers, or to make impressions, or to show off.
    I do not care about the reasons. I like watching how Steve works. His personality, work ethics, his integrity, his self-respect gives some insights in what values were installed in him as a child. Good job, Steve! Shnor-ha-ka-lut-yun and ha-jo-ghut-yun!

    Function over aesthetic if you can't have both. Better a repaired bag that can be used than not fixing it since you couldn't salvage the whole snaps. Beautiful work.

    I just binge watched a bunch of your videos, They are fantastic. When I clicked on the first one that was recommend and I saw you disassemble a bag I just about had a heart attack haha but now I’m hooked and watching more before and after videos 😂 I didn’t realize how much work went into restoring these items. You do very beautiful work.

    I love seeing lovely, quality pieces being restored! Costs a whole lot less to repair than buy new. I do all of my own sewing repairs - saves a bundle!

    I have no doubt your skill and craftsmanship is waayy highet than LV. I don't see a problem with restoring it.
    1. You use the same or better products, 2. It's handcrafted, not done in some sweat shop in Chinatown trying to reproduce fakes for profit.
    You restore as close to factory original, as LV would. Your work is definitely art. I watch this stuff for hours. Wishing I had just a little of the skill level as you.

    You sir are a true modern day artisan, beautifully done. Your passion for the work always shines through. I love the add-on touches and research put into the project that most shops would not take into account. Additionally your honesty and always disclosing pricing is also appreciated.

    Wonderful seeing an expert craftsman at work.
    Well done videos!
    Would be fun to find a note under a surface.
    When I worked on things, I would oftehide a note with my thoughts of that day inside.
    Found my note manyears later when repairing a stereo amplifier in a cabinet.
