👩🏽💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

i really, really appreciate that you label image sources and specifically label images that are artistic interpretations. too many science channels sprinkle in unlabeled digital paintings or similar-but-not-exact images to illustrate what they're talking about, and it's really confusing to casual viewers who don't have the knowledge to be sure if they're looking at the real thing or an approximation for illustrative purposes. visual information has a huge influence on our learning, and presenting unlabeled, inaccurate information has a big effect on incorrectly teaching us (see: basically any pop culture depictions of science in fiction media).
Difference between a normal person and a scientist.
@@I_OptimusPrime I am a normal person that appreciates truth and real. I don't want an image of what an artist "thinks" it would look like. If we don't have a real depiction just say so. But that doesn't make for a good video for those who are complacent in just looking and using imagination. I'm really digging the inferred imagine closest thing to having a real depiction without actually sending something out there to see it.. I'm also annoyed at the fact that we don't have video of our planets in the solar system. Actual footage. Even Mars they time lapse send a satellite out to each planet in our solar system and send out waypoint satellites to help jump the communications so data can be sent and received at a higher rate.. it would make sense to have such things to witness impacts and other events in our neighborhood.
I can't believe it's already been a year! 🤯
I was just about to write the same thing. Can't wait for what's to come.👍🏻
Such a happy Christmas surprise for Dr. Becky when it launched 🙂
It has flown by
Me neither, it feels like it was just a couple of months ago it was launched.
we need to put three more in space in opposite directions
Love me some Becky. Your enthusiasm, knowledge and general charm (yes, that IS important) is intoxicating.
Next: Photosynthesis!
Yeah, we need this
What is the distance from the telescope? The planet may well be on its way to having organisms by now.
@@charliestevenson3500 698 light years. Its in our neighborhood.
@@charliestevenson3500 Not very likely given it's a "hot Saturn" that orbits very close to its star. This is a great achievement though, even if it is the just the first step on the way to sampling the atmospheres of other "Earth-like" exoplanets, which might have to wait until the next space telescope is launched.
@@aemrt5745 698 years is too little to develop a cell let alone chlorophyll
And here was me hoping photochemist meant photosynthesis.
Same here ✋😆
haha, me too
Yeah seems like they should mention that, ....it is a hot gas giant super close to the star.
Yes but photosynthesis is possible there
Same here 😒
Can't wait for the next Dr. Becky videos...just love Astronomy
Might not seem like anything crazy but it’s nice to know chemistry obeys the same rules elsewhere
Meanwhile, physics said "Hold my beer"
Can't believe it's been a yr. I was up in Vermont last Christmas at my nephew's house turned on the TV and was 10 min from countdown what a gift I woke up everyone cheering it on!!
We should beam a "Welcome to the universe" to the planet and by the time it gets there the hyper-violent space empire invaders will have evolved.
Looking forward to your full video on this.
That author list is as long as an abstract!
Different fields require different levels of cooperation, apparently :)
Kudos to them all!
Having Dr Becky on earth is like having the gold mirror of JWST still here, only shinier and more reflective.
her excitement is infectious..
All my life I've known about the other stars in our galaxy, but the idea of other planets seemed like so much science fiction. But here we are, discovering new planets! So groovy! There's so much to learn!
Saw this, freaked out... and saw it was a SHORT?!? Whyyyyy? :)
To advertise next week’s video
there will probably be a longform video talking about it shortly
Papers are being released. Need time to understand it.
Based on the latest studies, more studies are needed.
You’re excitement is contagious 👍👍
Love ya Dr. Becky🎉
Gosh, girl! Sounds like you've OD'd on Caffeine! ENTHUSIASM! One of the reasons I so enjoy your videos.
I am the great Cornholio. I need TP for my bunghole. Are you threatening me? Do not make my bunghole angry !
doesn’t wasp-39b have an official name? It was one of the planets to be officially named by the IAU. It’s real name is Bocaprins, I think.
This is super interesting but... A year since JWST launch?? Already????
I know 🤯
It appears that the entire astronomy population of the Northern hemisphere has a citation on that paper!
There be life there!! 😮 Can't wait to meet them 😊
Can only be produced by photochemistry sounds pretty strong to me. If I remember my chemistry lessons correctly there are a few ways to produce SO2 through ordinary chemistry. Have a hard time seeing how these all can be excluded just based on atmospheric observation.
The other methods are through industrial output or other artificial means.
And isn't it a gas giant?
@@jichaelmorgan3796 Yep. I mean, there are OTHER methods besides what I mentioned. Like volcanoes. I think it's obvious the chick meant "in this context".
@@chriswhite3692 How are emissions of volcanoes industrial or artificial sources or photochemistry? The planet could have all kinds of microclimates with weird chemistry, really don't see how you can exclude all alternative options.
@@silentwilly2983 What processes outside the ones I just mentioned can produce it?
Imagine how excited she will be when they discover photosynthesis.
JWST was my moon launch since I wasn't alive in 1969.
Woke up at 0400PST to watch it. What a lovely Christmas gift 😊🌟🚀🛰️
Love this!
I love your excitement over this news.
Organic chemist here.
The result I'm really looking forward to is the detection of isoprene. It'd be a strong indicator of an earth-like biosphere. I haven't mentioned any astrobiologist bring it up before. Then again, I don't frequently read their material.
If you have heard it mentioned, please respond.
Good video, keep it up.
Incredible Dr.becky
Gotta love the samurai jack of the college football team players not givezin a fuck less but macking that field goal
The fun is only just beginning. 😉👏🏻
photochemistry not photosynthesis
wow! breathtaking! But wikkipedia says that WASP-39b is a gas giant, with a temperature of 900C !
i had to go and check that it has been a year, where have I been ????
Great to hear your latest JWST news ! Green Flash Harpin Hank Hogan in California indefinitely 😊. Maybe that new giant visible space telescope would be able to visualize a green flash on an exoplanet ? Thanks
Awesome thanks for sharing
Now we're getting somewhere with JWST !!! Bocaprins is 700 LYs away, is as large as Saturn, and has a surface temp of around 1,600°F. Exciting for the photochemistry, but not a world we'd want to visit.
Oh be still my beating heart! PHOTOCHEMISTRY!
Becky ranks in the top 5 for best hair on CZcams.
But I thought sulfur dioxide could also be generated through volcanic activity?
Not on a gas giant.
@@jennifersaar1611 🤔good point
I'm not an astrophysicist, but my caveat, "sulphur dioxide can only be produced by photosynthesis BY THE MEANS WE UNDERSTAND"
I'd be swell if said planet were covered with plankton, moss, trees, etc but I won't assume it is
I'm just waiting for the results from the Trappist 1 system.
Its a trap ;)
I liked it much more when a scientific paper had one, ore maybe two authors on it.
We're moving in the direction where the first three pages of a paper are going to be the authors.
What fun is that ?
Mr. Checkov, lay in a course for Wasp-39B. Mr. Sulu, ahead, warp factor 5. If only it was that sample….
Also remember that no 2 planets have the same atmosphere so any life that evolves on one is specialized to live there.
Amazing!
Do astronomers ever look for the decay products of nuclear explosions in exoplanet atmospheres?
A nuclear war would be pretty good evidence that intelligent life exists on that planet, or at least it did until they nuked each other.
James Kirk is an author on one of those papers 😯
Becky, I hope you read this. Will we ever be able to photograph an exo planet? I wonder is a current technology limitation or is there a physical limitation that we could never surpass?
Thanks 👍
Cant wait
Please let the peer review and subsequent studies confirm this!!
I need more details!
Sulphur Dioxide is only produced from like algae or plants, which means that planet, can produce life.
Be sure to chat with Brady about your favorite AGNs that have NGC numbers!
Can we find Intelligent Life on an exoplanet by detecting the use of its respective Infrared Atmospheric Window? Basically, can we just look for this specific type of Air Conditioning system?
That's pretty cool.
I was a young man when JWST was first meant to be launched.. it may well be 1 year since it DId finally get out there.. but by Sagan, did we wait through SO many years of delay and confusion that it lost it's lustre for us amateur types.. So it good to see pro physicists all high on the glut of much delayed data.. Science rocks at recovering from set-backs.
This is a really cool month other the then the dance of hearts and meeting of eyes of Valentine sparks. The Warmth of JWST inspires another round and or anther bottle for "kicks and giggles." of it.😜🤪🥂🍾
Woooow! 🎉
Ngl. You are real life Janeway.
Woah.....I didn't understand a word you said and English is the only language I speak
Whaaat that's rad!
A year since launch is almost upon us already; my God.
Why was Wasp 39b a target for research?
Just curious if you know the community interest in Wasp 39b. Also if the Trappist planets will have a similar analysis.
That close to a star not surprising there's photochemistry
Don't fret there is another earth. and many of them.
- Photochemistry means there is alot of photography development going on, on that planet.
Black hole and going to live forever. Irene Cara. Fame". I am going to live forever." Maybe in black hole because the tine stops ?
Neat!
Photochemistry is not photosynthesis but exciting nonetheless
Your hair looks perfect, just like that.
I thought wasp 37b was where it rained lava or glass or something like that? You know better than I do so I'll have to take your word for it
SO2 is also associated with smog 🤯
Which begs the question: if JWST brought us the weather report, how long do we have to wait for Wasp 39b traffic and sports highlights?
Fire up the spaceship…. Lets go! I brought plenty of Beer! 🍺🍺😃
it's never aliens until it is :)
Our system put a ring on Saturn was39b is unloved by its system.
I wonder if Dr. Becky is this enthusiastic normally
Very energetic, imagine sex with her, must be outstanding :)
@@schmirgldecks dont be creepy dude
@@fademusic1980 nothing creepy there
so, something that only can be produced by starlight has been found in the atmosphere of a planet that stands really really close to a star?
Sulfur Dioxide is also an indicator of a strong Magnetosphere and Ionosphere, which means that the planet has a strong protection against solar radiation, making it a strong candidate for life to exist.
Slow down there boss. Mercury, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all have a magnetosphere.
@@justinasbury4956 And, you're ignoring context.
I claim it.
The news as ignited the social media on fire just like a newly struck match.
Can't you smell it ?
So. Many. Authors...
I never see that in my social sciences papers
Isn’t Sulfur Dioxide released by volcanos on Earth?
Ummm check with the volcano guys?
On a gas giant?
@@GrrAargh1 no one has experienced what’s beneath the clouds but there all terrestrial. Gas fills the contents of the container so the atmosphere is there because of pressure is generated on a surface and only solids and liquids have a surface. The term Gas giant is a lot of hot air.
It amuses me that when we do make first contact, we will be the weird aliens that keep testing things that we already know... Our primate descendants will be annoyed trying to explain the scientific process to some other species, repeatedly, because they just don't get it LOL! Who would've thought *we'd* wind up being the egg-headed aliens? LOL!
Yes
Congratulations
I can- Models remember!
I wish she was my professor.
So with 1,000,000 x 1,000,000 stars with untold planets there must be life on some, to possibly, with 1,000,000 x 1,000,000 years and environments and dice rolls on every one of the 1,000,000 x 1,000,000 x 1,000,000 planets, life probably exists on most of them
Oh wow
What! One year already?
