Great Expectations (1946)

- Great Expectations is a 1946 British film directed by David Lean, based on the 1861 novel by Charles Dickens and starring John Mills, Bernard Miles, Finlay Currie, Jean Simmons, Martita Hunt, Alec Guinness and Valerie Hobson. It won two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography) and was nominated for three others (Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay).
The script, a slimmed-down version of Dickens' novel - inspired after David Lean witnessed an abridged 1939 stage version of the novel,[4] in which Guinness (responsible for the adaptation) had played Herbert Pocket, and Martita Hunt was Miss Havisham - was written by David Lean, Anthony Havelock-Allan, Cecil McGivern, Ronald Neame and Kay Walsh. Guinness and Hunt reprised their roles in the film, but the film was not a strict adaptation of the stage version. The film was produced by Ronald Neame and photographed by Guy Green.[5] It was the first of two films Lean directed based on Dickens' novels, the other being his 1948 adaptation of Oliver Twist.
The film is now regarded as one of Lean's best; in 1999, on the British Film Institute's Top 100 British films list, Great Expectations was named the 5th greatest British film of all time.

"I loved her against reason, against promise...against all discouragement that could be."
Joe Gargery is the truest person that ever was. I know he's only a character in a story but I wish I had a friend like Joe Gargery in my life. He never ceased to love Pip even when Pip's attitude towards him changed. He nursed Pip back to health when he was sick and delirious. He was more like a father/best friend to Pip than a brother-in-law. He made me cry when I read that book as a school girl. He made me cry as an adult now watching this. 😭
& what about his wife????
@@junaidahmed2827 his former wife, Pip's sister, not so much. But his second wife, Becky, was an amazing, honest and loving young woman. Sweet Joe deserved such a kind wife. And they even named their kid after Pip. That shows how they loved and cared for Pip. 😭
@@deepathomas6818 Indeed Joe was an ideal friend, husband & partner. He was caring & selfless man, he deserved to have someone like Biddy which he had in the end.
@@junaidahmed2827 oh yes Biddy. I forgot the name and said Becky. 😅
@Miss Thomas, perhaps if you first of all wish to BE and BECOME a friend like Joe Gargery, you'll once in a lifetime be fortunate enough to find such a friend!

Yep
I don't contest this, but read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Another great book about character and life in general, friendship, unconditional love, etc. Hugo wanted to write a book to be compared with Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Altgough the books are different in genre and in timeframe, both are excellent.

I like the film too, but I can hardly bear with the fact that a middle-aged actor played the role of a 20-year-old Pip!There were several times I could not look at him in the face, especially when he tried to put up an innocent look.
True
By far the best adaptation of the book this movie. I'm glad it's up on YT.

Thank you 🙏🏻
I'm reading this book now in my school and if I sometimes couldn't understand the book, I take a glance on the movie and I do quite understand the chapter..thankyou
It's really an old movie. I feel like i find a treasure
I have never heard of this novel but through this year, I'm in class 11 and this novel came into existence into my life because of some subject which I'm studying now and it really touched my heart which forced me to watch it and i have watched it ❤ As pip falls in every expectations in the beginning but as he grows older, becomes a gentleman every expectations of his came true like finding a beautiful Estella which he was fretting for his whole life❤ Ahhhh loved it 🫶❤️🫂
I don't know why but the start Dickens has given to this novel gives me goosebumps- _My father's family name being Pirrip and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So, I called myself Pip and came to be called Pip._ Immense respect! ❤🛐
Studied it in Class 7 and back here in Class 10 just to revive this masterpiece by the legend! ❤🎉
What an engaging commentary on the realities of life! Must have read d book, hundreds of time.

@@aytbanali7106 But I Don't think it's Difficult😕 And it became more easy after seeing this movie 😀😀, ugh ! I love this novel SOooo.. much !
But don't you feel that John Mills was too old for the role? It was quite unbearable to watch a middle-aged actor playing the role of a 19-year-old Pip!

Really so amazing acting .I like it 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
My favorite novel in my honors life. I never forget it.
At 1:30:16, Mr. Wemmick says "I want to offer an apology" about the Aged's idiosyncracy. But the original quote in the book is "I won't offer an apology... for he isn’t capable of many pleasures-are you, Aged P.?" (chapter 37)
I really love this entire episode. Mr. Wemmick accepts the Aged for who he is and is quite unapologetic about it.
Since 2013 wen I was introduced to this book by Mr Dickens, I loved it upto now ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The best version of all
I would have loved it more if the ending would have been the original one where estella remarries someonelse ,pip settles in cairo still lost in his own world of illusinory *Great Expectations* as he calls it. That would make much more sense. Marriage just for the sake of *a happy ending* was not the right way to end such a lovely deep meaning story.
What is actual ending in Novel ?
@@pradeepmishra3232 pip and estella end up together however she was married before. Her abusive husband died when he fell off his horse.
@@catherinedaydreamer6333 They don't end up together if you mean *marrying*. They just meet in the end, do a small chit chat and leave.
@@offodemi though the last line signifies, she didn't wanna part away. Though I think the ending is open to interpretations
You are absolutely right.
I think its the best of movie ever seen..wanted to meet pip, joe, biddy, estella
THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO😍THIS VIDEO HELP MY STUDY
Just read the book and in my experience it made me emotional . The fact that a young man Pip always thinking about marriage and his future goes same for me . What tore me was pip not able to marry Biddy and how he lost his backbone Convict . Also how much he loved Estella but the ending confused as to whether Estella and Pip got married or not?
According to the orginal novel pip and estella end up being friends, they did not marry.
Excellent
Man this is good ❤❤❤❤
