Wanna have your mind blown as a Starcraft player?
Starcraft was originally supposed to be a 40k game.
The Zerg were supposed to be the Tyranids and the Protos were supposed to be Eldar. And of course, the Terran marines look very similar to Space Marines.

Well if you are StarCraft fan, this would be familiar to you. Why? Cause both SC and WarCraft were supposed to be Warhammer games. SC = Warhammer 40k, WC = Warhammer Fantasy.
Blizzard were huge fans of the franchise and wanted to work with Gamers Worshop.
Unfortunately GW refused the license at some point. So blizzard changed some things and you got SC.
There is a reason why Zerg look and sound exactly like Tyranids. Protoss like Eldar.

For lore I would start with "Every single Warhammer 40k faction explained" part 1 and 2 from Bricky. It's chill and newbie friendly, explained with humour and heavily summarized, not too heavy to digest. After that, for more lore check out Luetin09. He has everything you could possible need for lore, he has a playlist on his channel for the entire 40k lore, in order.
When it comes to animation, there are a handful to go for but most are cinematic trailers for 40k games or fan animations. To start off:
    Astartes parts 1-5.

Theres also stories like the Siege of Vrax, The Twice Dead King, The Fall of Cadia and many more. Once he actually gets to like the story, then he'll want to know the boring stuff overview. Warp. Basically parallel universe, filled with manifestation of feelings, subconscious, toughts, dreams of every living creature, mixed into one. And since carnial needs, most brutal and basic are strongest thus they get manifested stronger - as Chaos Gods. Khorne is rage, god of anger, blood, massacre. Nurgle is illnes, deterioration, miasma and rot. Slaanesh is sex, pleasure, pain, excess and starving for perfection and beauty. Tzeench is change, lie, knowledge, power and madness. But there is much more things in Warp. Some people - psykers - can tap their minds directly to this source of power and use it to do basically magic. But often it cost them madness, corruption or death. And then - Warp is only way for starships to reach FTL - only by entering there and navigating confusing streams under guidance three eyed Navigators, they can travell between stars. That's why Astronomican is so important - being manifestation of gigantic psychic power that is Emperor (before get maimed by his rebelled son - Horus, he was ultimate and most powerful of psykers ever, able to even trick Chaos Gods) it is used to navigate trough Warp, serving as lighthouse. That's also why Inquisition is important. Relation to Warp is two way - if someone too much give themselves to those animalistic feelings - faster or later Chaos will answer (and much faster if they are psyker) - that's why Inquisition need to catch those who not follow Imperial rule. Because someone with mind override with Chaos will soon drag others, and rebellion will grow as fire. Other traitors will flock there. And in worst case scenario - creatures of Warp, that are like pieces of Chaos Gods power - Demons will manifest and open portals letting more cultists and mosters flood in. Biggest, millenia old portal to Warp, that basically engulf big chunk of galaxy is Eye Of Terror. It was created because race of psykers - Eldars - decided to party little too much - and all accumulated unspoken debauchery that bored immortals were able to procure, explosively manifested killing most of them and creating new God of Chaos - Slaanesh.

Baldermort's Guide to Warhammer if you want the low voice of an storyteller with actual original stories and lore then he is your man. Longish videos 30-60 mins.
Majorkill if you want edgy jokes with an australian accent. 10-15 min videos.
Oculus Imperialis if you like to get your lore through a man roleplaying as a rememberancer (historian) of the Warhammer 40k universe. 20-30 min long videos.
Luetin09 in depth facts and some speculation about the more obscure parts of the universe, miniatures and little about the books. 25-80 min long videos.
Wolf Lord Rho mainly about talking and speculating about specific people or events by referencing the books related to them or talking about the books themselves. Both factual and speculative with the true fan boy enthusiasm. 10-20min videos.

Begin with something fun like if the Emperor had a Text to speech device. Early on it covers a lot of background lore. Moving on a few of the books and games are very noob friendly and I was a fan of Dawn of War II, Battlefleet Gothic II and the Eisenhorn book Trilogy (on audible). Ultimately the lore spans decades of work so if you still want more you can start looking up lore videos. Adeptus Ridiculus and Lutein are good places. There are plenty of books on audible and some popular titles like the Gaunt's Ghost series are well loved by the community. The table top game is well loved as well but depending on where you live (and your income) you may have a challenge getting that going.

I'd probably start with GWs cinematics (9th edition, kill team, armoring and Horus Heresy) and the Dawn of War trailers/intros, maybe Battlefleet Gothic Armada (1 and 2) too. From there you'll just have to see.

ignoring the audio dramas, lore in video games, lore in codexes and on the websites, ignoring the lore in short stories published in white dwarf magazine since the late 80's, and only counting the actual published novels. There is i think around 600 books.
I have read about 50 of them since i got interested 2 years ago, but none of my friends care to listen much. So i get my fix with warhammer reaction videos on youtube.

If you think that IT looks similar to Starcraft...
    It because it is...
Originaly(according to urban legends) Games Workshop partnered with Blizzard to make a 40k RTS game(in the wake of Blizz's Warcraft success).
And for some reasons GW bailed amidst developpement, taking the rights to the IP with them...
So Blizz were left there with an engine, models and assets, so they tweaked and rework what they had and made their own thing (more or less) and it gave birth to Starcraft.
GW have a LONG tradition of shooting themselfs in the foot when it comes to their IP exploitation...
They are mostly outta touch with their core audience and players and focus on the wrong things.
Good thing that the univers of 40k is so darn epic and interesting, so people Loves it to death, but honestly if another Company that wasn't as inept and incompetent as GW, would buy the IP back somehow, everyone would rejoice in Glee and no one would shed a tear for GeeDub...

2 rules of thumb for 40k and 2 other rules for the fans.
Rule 1) there are no Good guys, even the Tau while they look good on the outside, well think Ba sing se from Avatar.
Rule 2) Scale! 40k is all about a universe of an absurd (yet somehow believable) scale think of everyone who fought in WW2, which amounted to about 2~3% of humanity at the time...that's less than how many soldiers a given planet will use in its own defense.
    Fan rules
    1) we are "fascists" everyone in 40k is evil, we like a dark universe that might have some sprinklings of hope, but generally if the uniform is awesome or the monster is cool we like it.
    2) humor, 40k fans have weird humor. From Orks using the power of imagination to jokes about ethnic genocide, we'll laugh at it all, inclusing ourselves in a meta joke as we take the universe too seriously for the fun of it, or not seriously at all and flipflop just to troll.

Orks are comic relief, there is little that is actually scary about them... beside the fact that they literally HAVE to fight. A Ork that doesn't fight will get sick. And they love fighting, for them a eldritch horror infestation of their ship during FTL travel is considered in-flight entertainment for the Orks. This is a race that kills itself just as much as they kill everyone else. They aren't angry, they aren't upset, they are just happy to be krumping stuff.
These are the guys whose technology is fueled by belief, because they believe that this amalgamation of scrap metal, two pieces of wood, some string and three rubber bands is a gun, it will be a gun. Because they belief that red things move faster, they paint their vehicles red and they WILL go faster. Orks are sooooo numerous, that if they would stop fighting each other for 5 seconds and form one big blob, they could overrun every single race in the WH40K universe. But they are too stupid to realize this. They are hilarious and have some of the funniest stories in their repertoire.

hmm....just have to cheek ,doess he know that all the 'craft' ips of actvizz just is carbon copies of 40k basics that where jiggled around a bit and renamed to avoid law suits as they not got rights to publish in the warhammer lisence names or such ? ^^ ...so if you like starcraft or warcraft ,theres a near garantie you enjoy 40 k...though the owners of all the ips is more or lees crap piles of the same nature these days wich is a shame :/
