- Oops - so @matarmstrongbmx bought a crash damaged 2022 911 Porsche GT3 then worked through the night rebuilding it.. spent months fine tuning it.. and after all that work he brought it to the old Top Gear track for a run out. Here’s my take on what happened next.

I remember that top gear episode with Jackie Stewart teaching James May and what he said about cornering, amazing tips i aways think of that when driving fast..
For anyone who’s seen Mat drive in his vids the real surprise is that it took this long until he had some incidents.
He does seem to treat the road like a racetrack sometimes.
Yes! Mat is a nice guy but he can't drive fast cars fast.
I believe he is in his overconfidence phase. If he manages to tame that, he would be not only faster but also safer. One thing is for sure, he's not slow.
@@mementomori4972 nobody said he was slow. I said he could not drive fast cars, fast. He can't. The average guy, that's better than average at driving sports cars.....can keep a Subaru or a Supra shiny side up....but the Lamborghini/Ferrari/911 turbo group of cars is a different kettle of fish....especially ones from a few years back.
....and driving them anything other than tenderly can go wrong really quickly.

It's really enjoyable.
I'm guessing that all those years working with Jeremy has trained Ben to be tolerant of nobbish behaviour, because he does seem to meet a few, and he always manages to stay calm.
Ariel Atom 3.5R or a Caterham 620r will do the job nicely. Would love to see Matt trying to go past the tyre wall flat in a lightweight overpowered track day car.

Lotus Exige Cup 2 with the supercharged v6 if you have access to one.... the Porsche may have more top end but you don't needed top end on that track. We cant get the cup 2 in the states..... I have an Evora 400 love the balance may not be the fastest but its a proper corner car!

Matt has tremendous potential as a driver -"you're either fast or you're not" and with Ben's help can convert that potential into consistent (accident- free) speed. I would vote for high power, rear wheel drive, no traction control, no ABS as the ideal back up vehicle.

So my play-by-play for the crash is;
On cold tires, so less grip. My understanding of 911's is, you tend to steer with the throttle. Too much speed on the exit, the rear steps out. Stayed on the throttle so the rear steps out more. Counter-steering to keep the trajectory, car regains grip but then loses it again as throttle is applied again. Rear steps out again but car is heading for the landing light. Countersteering but forward momentum is lost due to loose rear end, weight transfer onto the front wheels. Wheels pointing the wrong way. On the brakes, so more weight transfer and more front end grip. QED: the grass. P.S. I have no clue what I'm talking about.

You should bring a car that has driving controls on both sides so you can properly show Mat how to drive fast. Should be entertaining too to see you grabbing the wheel and taking over in frustration also 😂

Colin McRae was one of the greatest drivers. He was always on or beyond the limit. 100% full send! Matt brings that same ethos over from his BMX days. He needs to install more safety equipment on his track cars. proper harness, cage etc. I could definitely see him in some race series. He could do well and would be entertaining to watch.

@gaycha6589, You've misunderstood my point. I am not attempting to draw a comparison between them. I'm simply suggesting that Matt has the potential to become a competent driver if he were to receive proper training and take it more seriously. You need balls if you want to drive a fast car properly fast. Colin McRae had some of the biggest in the game.
I need to see a series of you teaching Matt how not to crash and him teaching you car repair.

Imagine if Ben turns Matt into a proper racing driver.
In my opinion, according to the g-force graph, speedometer and sound of the engine he was not flat out. Just before turning left he have lifted his right foot from the throttle and change the balans of the car to the front. Then the rear axis start sliding and without traction control start the mess. Thankfully he is OK 😊

I definitely saw the clipping followed by the lack of throttle control - Mat can drive to some extent but he's got a lead foot problem, he's lucky the wheels did not dig into the grass and flipped the car.
Increasing your life insurance might be worth exploring if Matt is driving and you're the passenger.

One thing I’ve learnt doing track days is accept that you’ve lost it and look for a safe exit..
I think Mat could have just had a little spin on the tarmac rather than a trip across the grass had he not tried to fight it. (of course it’s easy to criticise from my sofa and I’ve done plenty of grass cutting myself)
You need to bring one of those dodgems cars with the rubber barrier around it.
