As a life long die hard Bowie fan ,50 years on and I never get tired of listening to those great vocals. He almost feels like part of my DNA now đ
My wife can't stand Bowie but I don't care he is entertaining in so many different styles he invented.
At last a reviewer who understands the background to this song. Well done !!!!
I had the absolute privilege of seeing Bowie in NYC just a few days before this show. He had scheduled 3 shows at the Roseland ballroom, a small venue, to warm up for this show at Glastonbury. He was in fact quite ill and ended up cancelling the first 2 shows. So I got to see his only show in a venue that holds 3000 people, there were celebrities everywhere and people scalping tickets outside for 10 times the ticket price.
He told us not to tell his doctor he was performing since he was supposed to be on vocal rest. Despite that he put on an amazing show with a few outfit changes and a ton of hits. He closed with Ziggy Stardust which he apparently hadn't performed in a long time. It was a magical night and I am thankful to this day to have experienced his brilliance in person.
I was outside the Roseland show when it was canceled. One of the great disappointments of my life.
God, Bowie was just a master and completely authentic! Have never tired of anything the produced. Just a genre onto himself!
This made me cry, David Bowie was such a powerful artist. As a freak kid in school, he had created a safe space for me to exist. I miss him SO very much. I love to see Beth be just as moved by this truly great man, as 5, 10, 13 and now 39 y/o me. Haha.
David Bowie was just one of a kind. He is so unique. RIP Major Tom, we miss you!
In the late 60's and much of the 70's, Bowie sang in higher ranges most of the time. He had at least a 4-octave vocal range back then along with masterful control of every little nuance of his voice. He could be operatic at times. This video was recorded in 2000. Bowie was in his early 50's. Check him out in his early 20's. Either way, David Bowie is the best of all-time.
"We can be, though, our unique selves" and that is where the magic happens
One of my favorite live Bowie songs is from The Concert For New York City, with just him and a toy piano on stage, still makes me cry 21 years later.đđđ
He's one of my favourite singers.
Anytime I'm down, regardless of the song, David Bowie picks me up.
I loved watching this version of Heroes. I've been a long-time fan of David Bowie, watching him go through his many eras of music. While he's gone, his music, isn't. xx
Beautiful! And the set list for this concert, gorgeous!!
This is my favorite song by my favorite artist. Taken too soon. I canât stop crying now, but thank you for posting this.
Bowie- an icon. I love him so. I love how his singing was deeper as he got older. Another amazing singer is The Damned's Dave Vanian. Bowie my favorite artist of all time and The Damned my favorite band.
Thanks for this reaction/analysis. I seem to remember Bowie had a bad cold at the time of this performance and was relying on his vocal mannerisms more than usual. He was still smoking at the time as well. There are more pristine performances out there but you get a lot of personality in this version! Thanks again.
I prefer this performance to the faster Live Aid performance, and I find his "sobbing" artistic.
@@Mr.Vitality I agree - I think the Live Aid arrangement/performance was a bit mainstream showbiz if that makes sense.
@@Mr.Vitality fuck no nothing tops his live aid version
Fantastic performance and great reaction!
Love this song and watching Bowie live.
I was fortunate enough to go to many of Bowie's concerts. This is different than usual but it's great.
Maaan... The 6 year old me is in that crowd somewhere, sat on my dad's shoulders cos everyone was up to their knees in mud, lol. It was a fkn special experience, and I think about it often.
That Glastonbury magic is totally legit, by the way. The BBC has kinda done whatever they can to try'n diminish that over the last 20 odd years, but it's a real "time and place" kinda thing, and they'll never take the magic from the land itself. Weird stuff happens there đ€Ł
What a cool story.
A lot more interesting than some egomaniac "reacting" to a video.
@@ardentdesir5796 Bit harsh...
@@Rikthescot I wasnt talking about Beth, because as a vocal coach she can give an expert opinion.
@@ardentdesir5796 Ah right, I should have noticed really. My apologies đ
Great reaction to an all time great tune Beth! Thank you! Much appreciated!
You should react to his early performances in the 70s during his Ziggy Stardust era
Bowie's vocals in the Wild is the Wind video is just wow.
Your videos are fabulous & you are lovely, also you do very useful and encouraging analysis which is useful to someone who has just started seriously using the voice as a means of writing/expression..ta
Always a leader. Such talent and so unique. He was just so beautiful... â€
Always made it to the Bowie shows when he was in my area. Miss you Star Man
Subbed! Love Bowie! The very best. Icon! Loved your reaction
I was there and it was the most amazing experience. It is really hard to explain just what it felt like to be there, as a huge Bowie fan it was just incredible
Please do more Bowie reactions!!
"he is so... cool" EXACTLY my thoughts when thinking about Bowie. a legend
Bowie was still getting over laryngitis when he sung this. The Live Aid version of Heroes is probably the definitive version.
I'd say the version in Berlin, in the 90s, myself. :)
I think there are many definitive versions. He was the definitive artist.
Earls Court on 78 for me, it's such a great rendition, and a fantastic backing band!!
You should also check out Under Pressure from the same concert as he duets with Gail Ann Dorsey, who has a wonderful voice.
Fantastic!! From Brazil.
It's amazing that he had laryngitis earlier in the week (before his performance@ Glastonbury). Iconic.
I miss Bowie, but his music will last forever
Related to him creating Heroes next to the Berlin Wall, he also made a German language version of the song, Helden. I only knew about the English language version until I picked up the Sound + Vision box set (which was released when he was doing his tour of the same name). That box set includes a lot of his best work up to that point, but he specifically included Helden as the representative version of Heroes on that set.
There is a French version too, Heros
The French version is second half of this version. czcams.com/video/9RU9C8UI10U/video.html
David was one of artists that from the moment he walked on stage he owned it a great preformer
There is a comment from one of the best guitarists out there talking about the same sort of thing about guitar as I think you were expressing about vocals that has always stuck with me when I was learning to play. "Perfect control equals perfect freedom". He was saying that you need to get the basics down to a high level and then you can go crazy expressing yourself anyway you want.
Iâve been a Bowie supporter since the first US tour, when he reminded me of Mary Martin (as Peter Pan). For another artist with a great voice and unique articulation, we love us some Jimmy Scott. Nothing Compares 2 U or anything else from the Holding Back the Years album.
Glastonbury is something magical, you must go there if you can, so much to see and hear.
Bowie magic was just amazing considering he had the germ at the time, sign of a real pro. Itâs been a long time since Iâve seen him with long hair đ
The Motörhead version of heroâs is moving
I think the very nice as a vocal coach performance is part of it
Do one of him doing âUndergroundâ. He does every vocal trick and uses every thing he has. That and The Beach Boys âGod Only Knowsâ. Breath taking.
How can you not have tears in your eyes..
OMG - you're all missing IT!? I toured on some shows in North America along with the Eurythmics and that is an unemotional crap analysis.. You don't have to feel the sweat to get it.. really! I'll give you 1..
A great performance to be sure, but if you want see some of his vocal chops at their best, check out his live performance of "Under Pressure", sung with - not Freddie Mercury - but with his bass player, Gail Ann Dorsey. Fucking amazing!
Hey Beth, check out Bowie's performance of "Let's Dance" at Glastonbury 2000 as well
I actually was there! We only drove down to see this in a clapped out Austin Allegro, that car was really old 10 years before. Maybe 20? Lol. We had some friends working security and after parking on a security guards foot, ( on hill and brakes were shocking), we found a way in! Gotta say though that first half of set had us all rocking but then switched to newer, bit dreary stuff, and lost the crowd a bit? The best bit was on way back to the car, thankfully still where we left it. Nearly everyone else had gone for a piss but I ,walking ahead, had to cross a wooden bridge, over what was once a scream but now a sewer. There was this guy, totally out if it, welding a chrome table leg about like a sword/light saber! I thought to myself "Bloody Hell! I'm in a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail? So I stopped start if the bridge and puffed on cigarette. Light saber guy walks across to me and I said alright mate? What's with the light saber? Unintelligible stuff but I heard him say bashing people! I said what just any people or bad people? He nah only bad guys. Ok so am I OK to cross the bridge of doom? He yeah mate you're cool. Thanks. My parting shot was? I wouldn't be so sure about the next bunch to cross here though? Bowie was okay but that dude on the bridge made Glasto for me.
My Wife's Favorite Bowie she passed away 4 years ago
More Bowie reaction â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
I saw him in Sydney at the showground in the early 80's on his serious moonlight tour
Love the analysis Beth. Would you ever consider reacting to Father John Misty? He is a unique songwriter with a captivating voice.
Some would say that to be uniquely yourself IS to be like David Bowie!
Glastonbury, I've been to 8, it is all it certainly an experience, the scale is mind boggling, the variety outstanding (food and music). I found myself going more to smaller stages each time I go (there are over 100 stages). Damned sight less midges than Scotland for sure ;) You won't remember much of your first one as you will wonder about in a bit of a daze as everything going on. You will enjoy your 2nd one much more.
what year was this performance? his hair was much longer than when i saw him in the 90s with Nine Inch Nails. what an amazing show *that* was. they never stopped playing. to transition from Bowie to NiN, band members would just swap out during Bowie's songs, until all Bowie's band was gone and it was just Bowie and NiN, playing Bowie's music, minus Trent. then Trent came out, and they one song together, and Bowie left the stage until it came time for the encores. it was truly theatrical and amazing.
For your own interests, check out a live 1978 version sometime⊠when the song was first performed⊠the original arrangement, plus he was much more of a belter when he was younger.
That reminds me of how much I miss that man.
I was lucky enough to be there, after a pretty epic journey from Scotland...
I've been to a lot of gigs, and this was just...on another planet from anything else I've ever seen. Such a special experience.
I was lucky enough to see him live another twice after this, both of which were đ„â„, but there genuinely is something weird and amazing about Glastonbury, and it was just amazing to see Bowie headline it. Can't put my finger on it or try to explain it without sounding all hippy and 'woo' so I won't bother. It's just a special place and everyone should try to go once in their life. (Of course it's become a lot more expensive and hard to get tickets for...back in 2000 it was still possible to pay the Yardies a fiver and they'd let you in through the gap they'd prised open in the fence. So I'm told anyway...
Honestly, if it was the last thing I'd seen or done on earth, I'd have died happy after this! đ§âđ€
Looking at his band I believe that this show is from around 1997/98. I could be wrong of course but, I'm pretty confident in my guess.
I think more often than people think the risky notes come when an artist has gains a footing in the industry or with the audience. With Bowie he always had that style, but taking your style to itÂŽs maximum forcing the audience to really listen to the complete arrangement is rare or difficult to navigate.
I was in the crowd for that, pretty near the front to left of the stage.
Hello beautiful Beth, I hope you are very well. David Bowie is one of my favorites. Thanks for smoothing out this great artist. I would like you to analyze the China Girl song. A hug and a kiss for you, put the kiss wherever you want haha
Hi from Canada, Ms. Roars. Great analysis, as always! Not sure that you take requests/suggestions, but if you do, I would love to see you analyze either â4th of Julyâ or âLimo Wreckâ by Soundgarden. I know youâve covered Chris Cornell more than once, but these are two powerhouse songs off of the âSuperunknownâ album.
Thanks for your time!
u have to watch BLACKSTAR
you should revisit this live performance with his tack from musikladen in 78, real showcase of his vocals live.
Bowie states earlier during this set, he was suffering from cold and might struggle with his voice.
It's always nice to see a classic performed live but this one is best known for its recording. If you haven't seen the story, take a look at this:-
Breaking down David Bowie's 'Heroes' - Tony Visconti & Erin Tonkon - czcams.com/video/7Q2scPrc1WE/video.html
Meshell Ndegeocello is stunning on bass.
Bowie has several live performances where he's literally hit D6's and an EB6.
You should listen to the "Kaleo". They are new generation blues, rock band with an old soul. Bang bang cover or no good are great.
Bowie = Rock god!
David Bowie had music in 70s that was popular with some Rock fans. Then in the 80s he grew into more mainstream. Spiders from Mars and Aladdin Sane are my favorites. Bowie deserves a tribute. Thanks for giving this to him.
pls react to HOMAYOON SHAJARIYAN SANAMA live play video in washington dc . he has the best vocals and he does runs you have never seen before.
Bowie is great also please check out U2 live at red rocks
hi beth, could react to Djavan- Asa performance at Night Music... I believe you will like it
One of the great!! Taking a bow!!
And correct. Do not to try be someone else. Do not play the act. Be the act! There are allready to many copycats in these times!
Good evening, I have been listening to voice coach videos. I find a wide variety of artists however I canât find anyone who has reviewed the King of country music George Strait. I recommend his songs âTroubadourâ or âGive it all we got tonightâ either the official music video or when he sings it at AT&T stadium.
Nice wow
I love it when the Anthony Newly influence shows up his modulation into nasality accents
I'd be interested in your reaction to the Statler Brothers
Bowie had laryngitis that night and asked the audience to help him if he falters, why heâs swigging the water. Not a bad job considering
I can hear some Scott Walker influence on his vocals, specially in his later years. You could react to some Scott Walker, by the way. A very unique voice.
Love your videos! I really encourage you to react to Allan Rayman pretty please: )

having basically 'grown up' with Bowie - might i suggest you check him out doing Drown Girl with a string quartet - or The Alabama Song
Itâs great, I had a binge watch and wow you had soooo much fun!
Youâre very brave doing the Survival course, it was great!
React to "JĂŁo". He is a brazilian singer. What a voice!
Labyrinth movie đđđ
If you would like to hear David go high, give a listen to "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing reprise" off of the "Diamond Dogs" album from 1974. I really wish you would because I would like to know what David's vocal range was and this particular song displays it better than any other. (Great analyses! Keep up the good work!)
Beth, please, react to Fred & FabrĂcio, 2 amazing and impressive voices, you go like so much!!!!!!!!!!
FIVE YEARS PLEASE
Best performance of this song is in Berlin....
I grew up listening to David Bowie who unfortunately died of brain cancer before he could accept his Grammy Award for Best Album so his son Duncan Jones did on his behalf
It wasnât brain cancer
It's hard to believe that he released this song came out in 1977.
Any version without his participation highlights how much Robert Fripp added to the original
Is this "received pronuncation" in song?
The most mourned artist ever
Please, I need you to react to Anathema đ
Beth, you have not done much Bowie. One of his best vocal performances is on Wild is the Wind, a cover of a song originally sung by Johnny Mathis for a 1957 movie. It was covered by Nina Simone in 1966 and that cover inspired Bowie. He does something remarkable with the vocals, and really it was around this time that Bowie gave up singing everything like Anthony Newley and really spread himself as a vocalist. Try it, you will love it. czcams.com/video/YsqlXkkEKxI/video.html
Please consider reacting to this brilliant artist: Taylor Phelan | Cover of "Train Wreck" by James Arthur
Please Beth, react to Kaleo - I canât go on without you. Itâs a wonderful song !!!
Please react to Mimi and Josy - the voice 2019 blind audiction (radiohead - creep)
More Layne Staley reactions...pretty please?
I wonder if you would find the time, as a fellow Scot and all, to react to this very rare and unique version, from the original Dexy's Midnight Runners, the soul band that was. Searching For The Young Soul Rebels was an album, almost expunged from that era, due to Kevin Rowland being the son of an Irish family living in the UK during the troubles. He has a unique voice, he once said he didn't want to copy any other voices, and decided he wanted to sing almost as if he was crying. czcams.com/video/H5tDsR52Yjk/video.html Dexy's Midnight Runners - I couldn't help if I tried
Coldplay âColoraturaâ Live Exclusive on the Stern Show, Coldplay - A Sky Full Of Stars (from Ghost Stories Live 2014)
