Shane Horgan's 2nd try vs England Rugby 2006

  • England 24-28 Ireland
    Twickenham
Shane Horgan's dramatic last-gasp try saw Ireland emerge victorious from an absorbing Twickenham contest and claim a second Triple Crown in three years.
Andy Goode drew England level after 68 minutes, and when Ireland infringed at a ruck with five minutes left, the Leicester fly-half stepped up to land what appeared the winning kick.
But Ireland launched one last break-out, and despite stopping Horgan at the first attempt, Moody could not prevent him dotting down in the right corner to spark Irish celebrations.
    Watch out for:
    - Horgan blowing past O'Gara yet getting tackled by a flanker. As someone on youtube commented, not good.
    - O'Gara getting destroyed in the maul after Horgan is first tackled
    - O'Gara jumping onto Horgan and giving him a chokehold after scoring the try
    - Eddie O'Sullivan's desperately lame fist pump celebration after the try was awarded.
    - Andy Robinson's slouch of disgust
    - Eddie O'Sullivan's desperately lame fist pump celebration after O'Gara's amazing conversion.

Had the privilege of being in Twickenham that day, I had the ref mic and started jumping around when I heard the TMO say "you may award the try". Euphoric leaving the ground and no "Swing low" shite to listen to! In my top three sporting moments!

In my view, the best Irish try of the 2000's. Overturned an English win in the final three minutes and what a reach from Horgan, one of Ireland's finest all-time wingers (and I'm a Munster fan).

It was a lack of composure that came with not being used to winning big games. I remember we on the triple crown in 04’, 06’ and 07’ and thought it was great but we kept losing to France. The 07’ in particular with Vincent Clerc at Croke Park still hurts to this day even with the titles and grand slams we have won since then.

The bounce was very favourable in that chip and chase from ROG, just like the one against Wales in 2009 Grand Slam, great skill with a bit of luck. Sexton and Murray are Ireland's most successful (and probably best) ever 9 and 10, perform well throughout the game for 80 minutes, but, Stringer and ROG had some individual moments of shear brilliance. Stringer going for the big pass in that area at that stage of the game is risky but he knew when to do it, ROG's kicking game was exceptional, cross field, for touch, penalties, conversions, the odd chip, he's one of the greats
