ZAN .177 Accuracy and Expansion Test

  • THIS TEST IS PERFORMED WITH THE 600 MM STX SUPERIOR LINER. SO BEFORE THE HEAVY LINER CAME OUT!
THE ACCURACY OF THE 16 GR ZAN ARE VERY DIFFERENT IN THE HEAVY LINER.
This is a test of the .177 slugs from ZAN.
The two weights tested are the 13 and the 16 gr.
The slugs are tested at 3 different distances. 34m, 75m and 100m and after this they are tested against a bar of caly for an expansion test.
It is important for me to inform viewers that I am not affiliated ZAN Projectiles in any way so my review is honest and performed with the best of my knowledge of tuning for the best performance.
Later tests had shown the 16 gr slugs to perform very well in the Heavy liner, wich means that those are my prefered slugs today. See later videos on my channel for more info.
    Best regards

      Hi Felix
Interesting with similar results - I didnt consider the 10 gr since the KO's didnt really like the fx superior liner, but maybe it is worth a try.
I hope that the upcommin 700 mm slug liner will solve some issues like spread and accuracy with the slugs 🤞

Thank you for sharing your knowledge Peter.
Funnily enough, a 13 grains slug also goes best around 296-298 m/s (980 FPS) in my 1:18" FX pellet liner. Unlike you Peter, I actually think the JSB KO in 13 grains shoots a bit more accurately than 13 grains ZAN slugs, especially at longer distances.
I share your disappointment with 16 grains of ZAN slugs. An FX pellet liner cannot stabilize them over longer distances. Can also whisper in your ear that it is even worse with 20 grains ZAN slugs.
We still need FX to step up and come up with a 'real' slugs liner in .177.

    Peter ,
While I’m bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning here is something that has improved my groups . You may be doing this already .
The FX Impact and for that matter any other manufacturer of adjustable swivel triggers with adjustable preloads and Foot pound adjustments . Lower the trigger almost down to the trigger guard after you have set your preload and pull and break you are happy with .
This allows your finger to rest on the guard as you pull through . It’s consistent and repeatable without thinking and it’s a matter of you squeezing the trigger with every shot . It works and has helped my groups .

I don't own any FX guns but do have an RTI Prophet Performance with a .177 barrel in it. Like you Peter - it shoots the 13.43 KO's extremely well around 980-985 and is good out to 100 yds. I ( like many of us ) saw Gerhard's video announcing the new H&N's in .177 but I've not yet been able to find any over here in the USA as I was also curious about trying something a little heavier. Looking around, I discovered a "local" guy who makes them in a range of sizes and weights - from 13 - 20g. The Prophet .177 barrel is not terribly long at only around 450mm so . . . I don't think I could push the 20g H&N's anyway. ( Gerhard was using a 700mm in his video with the 20g's and he was pushing them pretty fast ) I opted to buy two test samples of this guys slugs - one in 16 and the other in 18. The 16's - 'eh .. not so good. The 18's on the other hand - surprisingly nice - really good out to about 85 yards ( for me anyway ) - they seem to destabilize / fall apart out beyond that. I'm running them in the low 900's.
These are the ones I am currently experimenting with - again the 18's are good, the 16's ( for me and my gun anyway ) - not so much.

It is interesting that the 18 gr outperforms the 16 gr. But as long as you can get a good result with a slug that is heavier than the KO 13,43 gr 🙂
I would be open to test a slug a bit heavier than 16 gr, but 20 gr seems like alot, so 18 gr could be the one.
Im sure that my gun can push the 20 gr - Gerhard doing it at 930 fps (I believe it was)
But offcause with the 700 mm liner.
Can you get a longer barrel for your gun?
There is a huge gain in fps going to the longer barrels, but I am pretty sure that you know 🙂

    Peter,
This was a comment I made on another video out of Britain when he was comparing the .177 with a .22 caliber at 12 FPE .
This is what I said : I absolutely think the .177 is a great caliber for springers and PCP air guns . Don’t underestimate its capabilities in both accuracy and at harvesting small game for the table . Even at sub 12 foot pounds of energy with Diabolo pellets it’s lethal . Today with the availability of slugs in countries with less restrictions in FPE , it’s a leap forward for this caliber .

    • @VikingAirgunner
      @VikingAirgunner  Před 2 lety +3

      And so true!
There are so many advantages in 177.
In Denmark you need a hunting licence wich requires a course. After this you need a permit for your rifle and it needs to be locked up in a safe. Buying a new gun takes ages to get a permit.
And off cause there is the whole thing about air consumption and more expensive ammo.
AND you are not allowed to shoot it in your back yard.
So with the groupings that I get with the 177 there is no reason to go bigger.
If I was hunting - maybe... And if I was shooting beyond 100 m - maybe...
But since I m not I am perfectly happy with the 177 🤗

@@VikingAirgunner I would add the design of the FX Impact is modular with many combinations and swaps available .
Although FX revolutionized the rifling technic on their barrels it has left them with an Achilles heal . A thin barrel with to much harmonics .
They continue to chase controlling the harmonics via carbon fiber sleeves and now a carbon fiber sleeve with a nut . With our US market with heavier slugs and higher velocities something has to be done to go to the next level . You yourself are experiencing this with barrel lengths and accuracy with just the .177 .
Look to the future with a solid barrel being offered by FX or some other after market company to address that issue .

I am happy i have gotten 10 boxes of the Zan 13 grainers, and i have 5 boxes of 16 and 20 grainers, and i am far from unhappy about having spent money on those.
I will say so far, shooting Zan 16 grainers, and then changing to the new H&N 16 grain slugs,,,,, and it was nothing near it, TBH the H&N slugs was a mess, and clearly need to be shot in another way.
Also the 16 grain H&N slugs ( only one i have ) well loading one, take more effort than 16 grain ZAN slugs,,,,, i can only imagine that is due to the compound of the lead.
I found a good universal setting for my Maverick today, so with it i can shoot 20 grain zan slugs at 800 FPS, and i am sure if you put up 21 ping pong balls at 100 M i will knock down at least half of them, but 800 FPS then i do not get 40 FP energy, but thats also just fine for now as i dont plan to shoot 16 or 20 grain much, like Peter 13 or there about ( 12.5 / 15 gr ) is where i will do the bulk of my shooting.
And with my new universal setting i can do that with a range og slugs and pellets and on different hammer wheel settings and get 1 digit deviation on a 10 shot string.
MRD / Beasts also do quite well at 80 M.

It's time for you to check Edgun slugs 13.43gr (almost same like knockout) for me they have better accuracy ... im shooting 2cm group on 100m with MK2 600 superior & harmonic berrel... and 200m group 20cm ( shooting 970-980 fps)

I'm pretty sure your EDGUN KNOCKOUT slugs come from the same press as the JSB Knock Out. They are not bad either and in fact it is my experience they are a bit better in a standard FX liner at longer distances.

@@madeyeq4073 It is not my experience that small deviations in weight mean anything for shooting precision, it is the small mechanical deviations on the slug. Peter also found out in his last video that weight means nothing.
And no, will not try EDGUNS KNOCKOUT slugs as it is not possible and buy them in my country.

Maybe that was the bad luck that hit the 16 grain's? 😁

Thanks for the video and info Sir,, Sorry UK, your country and other countries have such limits on caliber and power on air guns, never mind real guns,,,, Real shame.. Crime still same, just they using knifes and hammers, cars and bombs there etc,,,,, Can't defend self at all at home,,,,,,, Sorry again,,,

    Hej Peter.
    fjedre, hammer, slugkit ?
    Mvh. Rasmus

      Hej Rasmus 🙂
      Venligst
      Peter P

@@VikingAirgunner Tusinde tak for hurtigt svar.
Vil du have noget imod vi skrev via Messenger?
