  • A drive on the Tuktoyaktuk Winter Road from Inuvik, Northwest Territories. This ice road is on the frozen Mackenzie River, and the Arctic Ocean. The video starts off near downtown Inuvik, then a stop at a gas station. After that, the ice road to Tuktoyaktuk.
    The ice road itself starts at 3:30.

    The Tuk ice road is now about to be replaced by an all-weather road, and when it is completed around November 2017, Tuktoyaktuk will also be accessible in the summer by road.

    I think the RC pulled you over to do a quick look for alcohol. While Tuk is not a dry community, The only liquor store is in Inuvik and it is not uncommon for people to bring back more than they are allowed and sell it (which is illegal, also new years eve is the perfect time to catch these people).

    Ah. The old fashion way. Drove this summer in 2022 and there was end,less tourists riding up to Tuk.

    That is what good ice looks like. AT - 20 the ice shouldn't be to slippery. I built that road numerous times as well as the other ones up there. Great times

    Congratulations on a wonderful adventure. As it was exactly one year ago (I write on 12/29/16) I'm sure you find yourself thinking back to it about now. The ice road would make it much more an adventure than an "all weather" road that apparently is being constructed. Life is short, adventures few. Glad you were able to do this and much appreciate that you allowed all of us vicariously to live it with you.

    I was surprised they don't cut the ice under the ships to inspect and repair the bottom and rotors. In Russia the crew and the captain do it every winter cutting ice layer by layer with chainsaws (it takes 2 months) and then going under the ship to do all necessary work, e g welding. May be the temperatures aren't low enough in this part of Canada. In Russia it's usually -40 to -60 C in places like Yakutsk and Zhatay where they do maintenance that way.

    • @donamos7425
      @donamos7425 Před rokem

      -40 is a rarity in Inuvik the last couple decades. I remember when they had those ships dry docked every winter. Not necessary any more

    • @donamos7425
      @donamos7425 Před rokem +1

      They used to use their boat launch as the ramp onto land. When winter set in they would send water trucks to build up an ice ramp. Cost for water there has dropped drastically from averting the need for the ramp as potable water has to be brought the via semi

      and don't think for a minute "all weather" means paved. Not even close. More like a hard packed dirt and loose gravel.

    • @drewsbay
      @drewsbay Před 7 lety

      Richard Mourdock it's just an extension of the Dempster Hwy! My favourite road thus far in my life.

    • @richardmourdock2719
      @richardmourdock2719 Před 7 lety

      I rode the Dempster last June.. as far as the Arctic Circle... hadn't thought of the Ice Road on the MacKenzie as an extension of it... or one might think of it as a "Gravel Road bypass", I suspect.

    • @drewsbay
      @drewsbay Před 7 lety

      Richard Mourdock sorry I was speaking about the new all weather road as an extension. I lived in Inuvik for a few years and the Dempster became common place, but never boring. I look forward to traveling the new road, totally different environment then the rest of the road. The ice road to Aklavik will still be open for adventure travellers though.

    @Someguyfromtexas My father and I are from Vancouver, BC and we were planning to drive to Tuktoyaktuk in April, next month, before it closes for good. My father has been doing research, but we are novices when it comes to driving up north. Do you have an suggestions regarding preparing for this trip, places to stay along the way, safety issues we need to be aware of, what to look out for? My father is retired, but I am still working so in order to cut some time I was planning to fly and meet him in Whitehorse, Yukon and drive up and back down to Vancouver. How long did it take you to drive from Whitehorse (assuming you went that route) to Tuktoyaktuk? Any input would be very appreciated.

    • @someguyfromtexas6270
      @someguyfromtexas6270  Před 7 lety +1

      Make sure that your vehicle has about 20cm road clearance, has AWD or 4WD, and snow tires. Look up 3- or 4-layer clothing systems online, and buy what you can locally or online. I used AirBnB a lot - almost every host is cool and helpful. I recommend spending the night at Eagle Plains, and talking to the people who work there. The biggest safety concerns I encountered were other drivers in town and cities. Weather is always a concern, but the Highway Departments will close roads when the weather is unsafe for commercial trucking. Wherever you spend the night, try to talk to the bartender at the nearest bar, or at least the hotel clerk. They'll tell you what's up, what to do, where to stop, where to keep going, etc. Keep your eyes open for aggressive or reckless drivers, and wildlife such as caribou, etc. Never drive faster than you feel comfortable. Whitehorse to Tuk took me about 20 hours of drive time, but I stayed at Dawson City, Eagle Plains, and Inuvik along the way. Before leaving Whitehorse, you and your father should visit one or two bars, and get the latest local info from people who live there.

      Thank you for your advice. My dad already arrived in Whitehorse and I'm flying out in a couple of hours to meet him. Your videos have really helped prepare us since not many people have travelled those roads. We will keep your advice in mind while travelling. Thanks again.

    Pray for our rothers and sisters In Indigenous and Inuit communities, in the Name of Yeshua
    1 Peter 1:16 16for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." trust not in the self, look not to the inner self, but unto Jesus Christ who knows us better than we ourselves, who died for our sins and rose on the third day to justify many. 1 Peter 5:6
    6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up(0ver sin) in due time.
