Thanks for posting ... my dad was the construction supervisor when building Eagle Plains and we spent two months up there with him in 1978 ... we flew up there in a cessna that landed on the highway which was only illuminated by vehicle headlights ... it was the adventure of a lifetime
Wow! Congrats SomeGuyFromTexas! I did this trip last summer, from Toronto to Inuvik (and on to Fairbanks and Anchorage). Alone, also. Most amazing road trip of my life. I wanted to do the trip over the ice road last Christmas, but decided to drive to California instead. You've inspired me to rethink and do it again over this Christmas (2017). My thing is that I want to do it in a regular car.....a Nissan Altima. I noticed when the Mazda 3 drove by and felt, hey? if it can do it, so can the Altima.Thank you! It brought back memories when I found out that YOU also had a fun time using the Automated pumps at The Corner. It timed out on me a few times...I had to pick up the phone and call the support folks. That part of the world is sooo beautiful. I was lucky enough to visit the inside of the Igloo Church. The Father blessed and prayed for me to have a safe trip home. Really, really warm people. Keep smiling and travelling, my friend.
The Dempster Highway can be life-threatening if you don't use your brain. Google for advice on clothing, cars, and other equipment. When possible, ask people in Yukon for recommendations. Ask auto mechanics, bartenders, truckers, hotel clerks, miners, etc., for advice on what to do and what to bring. Listen to their horror stories, and learn.
