If you 'don't even need her love' then whatever was there between you was nothing when all is said and done. it's a matter of emotional survival and moving on. it's a different story of course if you have children together, or if you actively helped her family through a rough time, or even if you were very good friends before even becoming a couple. But if you only ever were a romantic couple once that romantic basis is gone you are indeed strangers of a sort. you do not know each other as just 'friends'. it's a completely different dynamic and it would have to be an entirely new relationship that has to be built. Just that usually at the end of a relationship there's enough hurt on both sides to prevent anyone from being willing to make that kind of effort. Again, you're starting from square one on a completely new playing field. And a thing you also do not need throughout your life is an ever-increasing trove of ex's satelliting around you as 'now just friends'. it's great if people manage to stay friends after a breakup, don't get me wrong. 40 years of life taught me it's more of an exception than a rule. And if any ex feels the need to make a clean cut usually there are good reasons for that, even if it hurts.
