Coastguard said I shouldn't have gone spearfishing today

- The British National Spearfishing Championships are held over several competitions throughout the year and the forecast was not favourable/touch & go. The competition was postponed but I was in that part of the country anyway so decided to give it a go. Certainly not the nicest conditions to be spearfishing in but you don't catch fish sitting on the shoreline. Upon my return the coastguard bailed me up and asked why I hadn't logged on with them as they had received several reports of a swimmer too far out. They then found I was more than okay and returned to their pub lunch! I finally make use of the charcoal grill at our new place for a lovely dinner with one of the fish.

That water situation looks so unmotivational 🤣🤣🤣
It was either dive or sit around thinking of diving 🤣
@@DanielManndive, always dive.
Looks sharky.
@swright5690 no sharks in the U.K. yo worry about.
@@DanielMannWut 😂 yes there are!
If that was a Seabass...it would have been massive!!!
Those are the conditions Seabass love...muddy waters like soup!!!
The footage at the 5min mark where amazing, those fish where calm and beautiful!
The fish looked like it was perfectly cooked!
Some tips from me for the cooking...
Get a grill that opens up in half and then just lay that on the barbeque.
That way you will be able to twist and cook each side you want and at the end you can open it, place the plate on top of the fish, twist it again and the fish falls into the plate.
Also a tip about when the fish sticks on the grill...all you have to do, is to brush the areas that is glued to the metal with a paper or cloth or brush full of water.
Let the water work for 1-2min and then you should be able to just lift it off the grill.
Having it on the barbeque it doesnt give you access below it...
Great video Daniel, a good way to start the day and enjoy my morning coffee!
Great tips Dimos! I need to pay more attention in Greece next month to how they are cooking the fish on the grill 👀
@DanielMann if you gonna grill the bass, just leave the scales on, never sticks that way too.
I like eating the skin though. Leaving the scales on would definitely help.
Ah brown water Budleigh eh Daniel, living the dream :). Some nice Bass there though. This is where I regularly dip a toe & pleased to say it's not always this poor visibility 👍
I dived it another time before and it was delightful. Great little spot.
Your videos always put a smile upon my face! Love you, man! Keep up the good work!
Beautiful, lots of love from Canada
look like Master Rochy with the backpack 😂
Keep up the work, You’re an inspiration to get out there more myself not just on good weather days !
Cheers Harrison!
I love your videos, so relaxing and educational.
That water was very choppy . Fair play to you 😁👍👍👌
Ah, excellent video, as always! The grilled fish came off the grill perfect, and I'll have to give that one a try myself. Lots of good ideas for hauling our gear to the dive site! Well done, Daniel!
Glad you enjoyed it Alex.
Amazing as always, Dan! Thanks for the amazing content! That fish on the barbecue looks so good!
Cheers Jack!
Mate,you've got to be the most addicted spearo ever to jump in on such conditions. But it paid off really well, top catches and top grilling. Here in Brazil we have a saying for that : "Those who choose the water, don't catch fish"
I’ve never caught a fish sitting on the shore 🤣
love the grilling method for the fish ! I take notes as I always make a mess with the BBQ + fish combo !
Amazing Sunday morning watch! thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My man I am from Greece and a spearfisherman since age of 12. I enjoy your videos very much. But your cooking skills won me over especially the way you prepared the sea bass, that was 100% Greek grill!!!
Always loved the way I’ve had fish cooked for me in Greece!
Love it! Both the spearing and the grilling! Just I could have eaten it too! 🤣
Your self control is impeccable, it’s a goal to be so good that you can take time and be that selective
Early Morning uploads 😍 Just as I’m about to go out with the Frenchman, motivation off the charts!
Hope you have a great day out! I’m sure Max will put you into some great fish.
Great video as ever Daniel, so well produced!
Shame about the weather
well we say thats a sharky water day . sharks feed well in that murky water from storm
Love the poor viz and how you work it. Getting some southeast alaska vibes. Killer shots man!
Cheers Juneau!
Hi Dan another great video, fair play diving in those conditions and finding the fish. If this was filmed on the 29th July I was there bait fishing for bass. Gutted I've missed u some how 🤔 you did better than me I've blanked haha 😂👍🎣
Yes indeed on the 29th of July. I was also there two weeks before scouting. On the 29th I got in around 11am and out by 1pm so a short stint.
Cool prep on that bass. I'll have to remember that.
I'm beginning to feel my old spearfishing itch come back a bit.
Must be scratched!
Nice video as always Daniel 😊🙏🏻
Great idea for the fins, keeping them in a bag while walking👌🏻 Could you show how that’s made at some point?
Very nice looking seabass on the grill 😃💪🏻
Thanks Frans, it’s actually Kevin Daly’s idea. I keep the dry bag on the top for improved visibility and also to store things like shoes and fins.
@@DanielMann great idea and I will definitely try it out at some point ;)
Well done on still getting in and getting fish in those conditions, that bass looked unreal on the BBQ 😍
Thank you!
Nice video like always. It would be great to see some educational videos on how to find good spots and on the weather forecast.
Excellent video, excellent first shot directly in the head. I am getting into spearfishing and i'm happy for people like you making these videos without much advertisement.
You seem to have just as much fun cooking the fish as spearing the fish. Good on you!
All part of the process!
Good to see you showing the poms how us aussies roll. We often get good fish in a 20knt SEaster.
fish looks delicious:) well done on the cooking and good catch! Mahi mahi season starts soon in Malta and theres a load of FADs around the island, i'd definitely reccomend a visit.
I laughed at the conditions, other than windy the swell was small compared to what we dive on the west coast of the United States
They were so calm haha come on Daniel!
Awesome video! Great to see you chasing the fish back in Devon 😁
Long drive but it always produces!
Fish:
"The four leg surface demon is back with its light ray and expelling spine."
🤣
Awesome content! Could I suggest a small thing though? It would be really cool to know the depths on your dives, maybe a small graphic folded in during the beginning of the dive? Thanks again for great videos!!!
Everything in this video is less than 11m. If the depth ads to the story I’ll do a voice over 🙂
You’re such a champ answering comments like these, appreciate your commitment. I’m in Sweden so our laws prohibit us from spear fishing, but been free diving and would love to give it a go. Next time I’m abroad 😊
Love the shore dives. That produces the most successful hunts (usually) for me. Looking for some Merch! The blue and the red tee sold out. Any lite dive jackets in the future? Love your stuff Dan
Thanks Ralph! I'm due for a restock later this year I think. Got a big trip coming up over the next few months so will have to hold off until then.
love a video shot locally to me, brilliant results
Cracking daniel mann adventure!!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Kudos again to you! I love you for always keeping it real… “can you put down the camera please” ☺️
I ran out of hands for sure
idol from philipines always luv ur spearfishing videos
Are you ever gonna visit croatia? Fishing here is even more challenging than in greece.
And if you decide to go here you must try the spot named palagruža. It is by far the best island for fishing because it sits in the middle of the adriatic sea. It is my dream spot to visit and I am sure you would get some nice dentex there
Yes, planning on being in Croatia over the next two months!
nice catch and cook mate. you're a pretty decent chef
Cheers Bobby!
That looked delicious... nice!
dive safe bro...what a lovely dish
I am yet to begin spearfishing but your videos are a real inspiration. Now, I just need to get in the water.
Take the plunge!
@@DanielMann I will. I have a mask and snorkel, and have ordered some fins. I am going to start off just snorkeling for now to get calm in the water. The water temperature is warm enough that I don't need a wetsuit at the moment. I am perfectly situated in Falmouth, we have 3 very good freediving/spearfishing schools very close by.
Brrrrrrrrr no way I’d be able to last at Falmouth without a wetsuit 🥶
@@DanielMann 😀 I swam every day opf the winter without a wetsuit. It is just a case of building up tolerance. Channel swimmers swim for 15 hours with no wetsuit.
Can you do a video on choosing spots to dive? Not wanting to steal your spots but would be good to know what you look for.
Navionics is pretty elite these days. I’d definitely look at that for reef systems etc.
shout out from Philippines 🤙i rlly love your videos im a spearfisher beginner!!!
Amazing content as usual Dan!
Cheers Steve!
Wow, that crispy skin fish looks awesome. You should send the video to the coast guard 😂
Indeed! They jokingly said they would have to confiscate my fish for the inconvenience of getting them out of the pub 👀
@@DanielMann sounds like they were having a slow day. Heading out the Credlin Reef on the GBR tomorrow, it might be a little far from the pub for the coast guard.
Love watching Mark Welberg spearfishing
Great video, abit of dirty water spearfishing great for sharpening the reactions 👍
Great video was was good to meet you at start point open day 👍🏻
Thank you, was a great day 🙌
I feel like the slogan "I did a fish on a BBQ and it didn't stick" would be perfect 😂
Probably the greatest success of the video.
As always great video daniel 👍, i wondering if you had any sort of safety devices or communication device since your are diving in these conditions and on your own?
I carry a compass to always be able to find my way back to shore in case of fog which does happen from time to time in the U.K. Safety whistle and also going to get one of those safety sausages. Lastly I have a check in and out system with my wife so she knows when I’m going out, where and who with and then an agreed time to make contact to know I’m alright.
Masterful in every way. Bon appetit.
perfect! cant say more or less 😂
Nice vid Daniel….and good vis! 😂
Not the best vis and would have been a graft if you didn’t do your homework 👀
Great vídeo, Neves dove in the UK, but those waters seems strangely familiar 😂
~~~~~~
That water looks like most Oklahoma lakes! Great vid.
Wow!! Love your set up!!!
Thank you!!
Looks delicious
So you should adjust your butter, ad lemon juice or lemon cest, ground /chopped garlic and our your fav green season (oregano, parsley, Rosemary, cilantro, cilantrillo. Put it in an oven and let them cook.
Hi Daniel, thanks for the awesome content! That BBQ bass looked phenomenal! What do you look for in a new spot? How do yoi consider if i may be worth going to scout? I am recently starting to spearfish but based from a landlocked part of the UK, I do weekend trips away in my van fairly often but am often finding myself in remarkable unfishy spots! I would rather hone my sense of what terrain and locations hold fiah before committing to a spot where i dont find much! Thanks again!
I loved hope you prepared the the fish, I’ll be giving that a go myself
Highly recommended!
"dirty water loads of fish"..and they are more friendly compared when the water is clear. Blessed dive you got there. Divesafe always ☝️😎
They can be easier to get close to in poor visibility. I’d just prefer to find fish than not find fish!
Nice size bass. Been shooting similar size mullets over here down south Portugal.
Those are some nice mullet. I shot my first one of the year last week.
love it dan
Great work
Hello I BBQ lots of salmon thought I would let you know best way is you put flesh facing down when it's the color you like then you flip it over so skin is facing down for the rest of it works awesome. Forgot after you flip it skin down then you don't move anymore
Nice work brother 🤘
I love your content man, always look forward to it. What brand is anchor you use?
Cheers Peter, the anchor is Omer 👌
Thats the ticket... Its been very average weather down here in Cornwall the past week but I'm getting in tomorrow...
Good luck! Seems breaks in the weather have been very sporadic.
Omg Dan, great stalking and well placed shots. Nailed the grilled bass. 👍👍 Its a double from me
Cheers Wade!
@@DanielMann Has the penny dropped ? I think it has. When you're frustrated drop it back a few cogs. Be one with your quarry, it's an awesome formula 👈
Hey, love your videos man. Don't know if you've talked about it in another video but can you tell me how you stay safe when your out on your own? Have you got a different way of diving? Do you avoid pushing your bottom time? Anything else? Might make a good video if you haven't done it already. Or maybe you don't want to encourage people to dive on their own... I'm just starting out and haven't found a dive buddy yet.
Beautiful waters, be careful out there by yourself!
Very good shots man. keep up, can we get a review on the boat floaty and a link for that
Sadly this particular one is discontinued but I've got a video this weekend coming out which shows the exact setup.
Awesome ! 😮😊
@daniel mann could you do a slower video on how you prepare the fish before cooking?
Bit slower on this one czcams.com/video/2DvPcpXviHg/video.html
Looks like you cooked it perfect, awesome video
Thank you!
Great footage (as usual). Nice weather conditions 😇
what buoy do you have? Cannot find model in description to the video
Thanks Ren, it’s a seyvlor dive hunter but no longer in production sadly.
Well done Daniel. Great video
Cheers Mark!
@@DanielMann i feel some people are so focused on being safe these days......they forget to live. You managed it without issue.. Always enjoy your videos.
A true man of the sea 🌊 💙❤
I can just see the coast guard walking up with a bit of attitude, then doing the walk of shame back to the truck after they realized who they were talking to.
Surely back home you have managed to do fish on the bbq without it sticking! Hell I’ve even managed the coin operated council bbq and got it off
Never really BBQ’d whole fish that successfully in Australia. Fillets on a hot plate of course but we don’t often use charcoal grills.
Nice one ! need to get a bass myself to try that bbq recipe :D
I’m sure it would work with most other fish 🙂
@@DanielMann no doubt but I do fancy a bass though. Ahah, a mullet would do I'm not fussy ;p
How would you describe the fish situation in UK vs Adriatic? :) Keep up the good work Daniel!
Very different, much deeper in the Adriatic for consistent catches. U.K. is a lot cooler water and poor visibility often.
Complimenti Daniel belle catture e cotture.
Grazie Mario!
Yessir mate 💪💪💪💪
Awesome video mate 😎
Cheers Tony!
great video as always. caught my first bass here in japan the other day. around 4.5 kg. really fantastic eating. luckily i hit the spine i think, so it didnt go crazy. tougher bringing in the fish with a pole spear.
That’s awesome on a pole spear!
Hi!
always a pleasure watching your videos :)
what is the GPS device you are using?
looking for a cheaper solution cause the GPS included diving watches are too expansive for me
Just a cheap basic garmin one. About £120 👌
Have same Omer gloves, many pairs, fingers tear so easily. Then I bought knife safe chef gloves to wear over and it works amazing.
These Omer gloves have been great for me. Much better wearing than other ones like Cressi which are really soft.
Hey Dan , love watching your videos I noticed on this video that you have a very small compact anchor. Can I ask where you got it from?
octopus anchor lead
Hey Chris, it’s from Omer. A few companies make them. Quite good!
little tip if you don't want your meat or fish to stick on the barbecue grill, just take a potatoe, cut it into two pieces and polish the grill with it, that's it !
I’ll have to try that next time
Love your videos, it’s really amazing watching you get so close to the target fish. How deep is the water you dive in. Sad people can’t mind their own business these days, you know within yourself if it’s safe enough or not to go out. The dinner looked absolutely amazing, perfect job cooking over the charcoal bricks to.
Are there limits on how many fish you can harvest in the UK.
I’m watching from Ontario Canada, and been following you for I think at least 2 years or more now.
Thank you! This was all less than 12m so quite shallow. Depends on the tide as at low tide it can be a few metres more shallow. Only allowed to retain two sea bass per day in the U.K. at 42cm minimum. Most other fish have no catch limit but minimum sizes.
@@DanielMann12 meters is still a good depth. That’s not to bad for a daily catch limit. What’s the deepest you free dive. Looking forward to your next video.
I’ve not tried for a PB depth before. Perhaps this summer in the Mediterranean I’ll give it a go without a speargun.
@@DanielMann very cool the best to you if you give it a try. The Mediterranean must be amazing, just to be able to fish in those beautiful blue waters with such clarity, I’ll bet it really makes it a special place to dive.
That fish looks awesome mate, might try it with one of those horrible coral trout you dont like.
Might give it some flavour over the coals 🤣
Touche 😄
Tried it with trout, was awesome even you would have eaten it. Thanks for the inspiration mate.
I’m sure the BBQ added some flavour to the trout 🤣 I’ve done BBQ trout wings and they are pretty good.
Great job!
Cheers!
After watching your mate Timothy's latest video today and seeing your comment about moving to aus and then watching you dive in that, i think you should re read your comment.
Well done for persevering though.
Awesome
Couldn’t help but notice the speed your going on the float…is that just from finning or is there some motor action going on?
Just from finning. You can cover a lot of ground on these things. I allow 45 min per 2 kilometres.
Can you share more in detail how you set up your gear setup to carry on your back?
I’ll have to make another video!
