There is a complex system behind appointing referees in the Premier League. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have a merit table that ranks the most trusted referees - and then assign them based on the biggest games. But there are other factors that influence a referees appointment. What are they? What is this merit table? How does a referee climb the merit table?

The Refereeing decisions in recent games have been so poor to correct that we have VAR but VAR officials make even worse decisions ...

@@iwantgoals1566 there were none there because Clattenburg was the nominee. But he moved to Saudi Arabia. This process is done at least a year in advance and Clattenburg left just after the deadline, so the USA was chosen to send a second referee.

Referees and assistants take different qualifications, it's not as transferrable as some would imagine
He's right, it is a big shift, and it takes time to move up the pyramid again as a main ref. Sure, Darren England and Martin Atkinson succeeded, but 35 is probably too old to make the change.

@@jamesdaniel1173 I'm pointing it out that our referees have not being consistent or in form to judge big games. Also the way how FIFA chooses their referees is by a pointuation scheme, showing how many times our refs have made the right calls or not.
Given some of the refereeing they probably get a drunk from a park bench on the morning of the match and ask them if they want to be referee for the day.

Biggest problem with refereeing in my opinion; the secrecy. Why are they always so adverse to transparency and there can't be any criticism.

Great video but I'm not sure if I've missed an important point here, but I'm not sure if you have answered the question...you have explained how they rank within the table, but not how they are then selected from the table (besides their home address and team they support). Does the person ranked #1 automatically ref the most high profile match that week (assuming they're not excluded for the above reasons)?

It would be nice to see a side-by-side comparison of similar penalty and red card decisions that were different (awarded vs not awarded, and why) through TiFoâs disinterested lens. Could there be a better, impartial arbiter? Start with Salah vs Man City and Saka vs Leeds...

I think the ranking system with the VAR, might have clouded the referee's decision making skill. Maybe the lesser var calls, the higher their rating
If foreign players upped the quality of the premier league wouldn't foreign referees up the quality of officiating and help with bias issues cause you can tell refs like Craig Pawson and Mike Dean have bias issues

My uncle was a football league ref in the late 80s and 90s then did some stuff in the national league. He said it was the toughest job heâs ever had
What about the EFL? Back in 2017 Newcastle were in competition for automatic promotion with Huddersfield. We play Preston I think and the Ref for our game was a Huddersfield fan! Rafa complained and got penalised for it??
love to know how the missed red on the horror tackle by pickford on vvd was graded. does var officials face the same scrutiny when failing to have the ref take a look at things that post match are pretty obvious or is that why var is in shambles?
Good video done by Tifo. My issue with all this is why the PGMOL and match officials are not transparent with all of this.
There is no accountability to the public as fans keep wondering if they are being shafted by refereesâ decisions.
Referees should be micâed up like they did in the A league with one official. Let fans hear what is the thinking behind the decisions, their communication with the linesman and VAR. Also consider publishing these referee evaluations in order to determine PGMOLâs stance on decisions and whether they deem a refereeâs decision correct or not.
That could help reduce the heat on referees.

Mike Riley, who signed off on Rooney's dive, single-handedly ended the invincibles.
On the pizzagate game, he missed Rio Ferdinand's red-card challenge on Ljungberg and another Van Nistelrooy's red-card challenge on Cole.
Wenger criticised Riley's awarding 8 penalties to Man Utd in the preceding 8 matches at Old Trafford.
Hence, now in 2020-2021, we have Arsenal suffering under VAR and a thriving Penchester united.

I watch a lot of the premier league, and I donât think english referees are particularly good, but it grabs my attention just how many decisions go against arsenal, and in favour of manchester united.

Nice covering what goes behind the scene like this. Maybe the ESPN pundits etc who stumble into the studio or home office after their holidays and nights out might want to take a look at the processes and the work these people do rather than always blaming and being critical of PGMOL.
I am damn sure there is a column for good for Red cards for Arsenal in the referee table.
I wish they would do this in liga mx. Clubs regularly lose due to the most outrageous calls (penalties in particular). There is not a system of accountability, as convoluted as this one sounds yet fair, as in the uk
