  • I've seen these old PowerPC macs having somewhat of a renaissance, so I thought I would make a video of my 12" PowerBook G4, which has seen near-daily use since about 2015.

I love the feel of the 12" G4. It's dense and has a good, solid feeling to it. Nice to see one in such great shape!

The 12" PowerBook G4 was my first real laptop. I've gradually been selling off all of my vintage apple stuff, but this is one I'll probably end up keeping.

Hey man, great video btw! I like to use the powerpc platform, my "main" powerpc mac is a PowerBook G4 15 inch 1,33ghz. There are 3 browsers which can sorta handle the modern web, TenFourFox is the most compatible with the modern web, but its painfully slow! Camino is dead, don't use that, even the optimized version is cr*p, then there is Webkit, its one of the fastest, but also, a lot of security and certificates warnings, and then there is 1more browser i use the MOST on the powerpc platform, you should dual boot with leopard for this, but trust me, its so worth it! The name of the browser is AuroraFox, its another port of firefox which is older than TenFourFox, but can handle most websites quite well, it will not render all websites correctly, but its sertainly useable! Its MUCH faster then TenFourFox, you should give it a go!

Hey! Thanks for dropping a comment like this, I really like to hear from other people who are still running these own machines. When I had Leopard installed on this machine, I did use WebKit quite a bit, but it's out of development now and even when it was current, I found that it ran like garbage. I'll definitely check out Aurorafox, that seems like it could be the ticket. Shame it doesn't run on 10.4 though, I actually really like 10.4 as the main OS on this machine.

@@Rustbelt_Research I tried Tiger on my machine, but it whas incompatible with a lot of my software, and i choose the functionality over the speed factor, AuroraFox is also out of development but its a great browser, it has a nice balanced browser, it has its on querks and features but its a good browser, maby older versions of Aurora may run on Tiger, but the latest (which is 18.something) does not run on tiger.

You're right about them being hard to find these days. I had one in about 08/09 but it was in pretty rough shape. The HD died so I sold it as-is. I got the itch again last year to get another one and watched eBay for a few weeks but couldn't find one in good shape so I scoured Craigslist nationwide and found a 1.5ghz model nearly complete in box in another state for $100. It took some convincing to persuade the seller to ship it to me but they finally caved. It's cosmetically in great shape but the fan is a bit noisy. I plan to install an SSD at some point so I figure I'll swap out the fan once it's opened up. I also had to get a new battery and genuine charger. The 3rd party charger works fine but part of the charm is the amber/green glow of the genuine plug. lol Anyways, great video! Keep up the good work.

The chargers are getting hard to find as well. I have a couple, but most of them are the even older "yoyo" style.

It appears, I picked up mine on Ebay several years ago just at the right time. Also, have the top of the line model with the 1.5 Ghz processor and max RAM of 1.25 GB. But, it still has the original hard drive. So, my plan is to soon have the hard drive replaced with a large SSD. Afterward, I will set it up to duel boot into both OS X 10.4 and a version of Linux.

I think you were thinking about MacTubes. CZcams changed their protocols a couple of years ago or so, and broke MacTubes, so it no longer works. The only alternatives I know of require Leopard.

Very nice video, but the first five minutes moved a bit slow and was hard to watch. Try to keep your introduction down to about 90 seconds and then get right to showing off your computer model which, you did an excellent job of. I have the same model picked it up many years ago because of all things it was the last small laptop that Apple Computer made which included a built-in 56K modem. Back then spent a lot of time at a senior family members home that did not have high speed internet and only a telephone land line. However, once it was in my hands, I fell in love with this models style, power, and small form factor.
Daily, I carry my Powerbook G4 12 inch laptop with me to my office. Because of its age sometimes people ask me how do, I make use of it? So, I tell them mine is used for running classic OS 9 software (i.e. Word Perfect, Via Voice, etc.), OS X 10.4 software (i.e. iLife, iWorks '09, MS Office, etc.), to watch DVD movies, and recorded over the air HD TV shows using the Elgato EyeTV 500 system.
