Clan Farquharson is a highland Scottish clan originating in Aberdeenshire Scotland. The surname Farquharson is a gaelic term meaning Dear Man. The clan descended from Alexander Shaw who was the fifth chief of Clan Shaw. Alexander Shaw’s grandson Finlay Mor is considered to be the progenitor of the clan Farquharson.
The motto of the clan is Fide et fortitudine, which means, By Faith and Fortitude, and, the clans crest features a demi-lion holding a sword in it’s paw.
The historic seat of the clan is Invercauld Castle located in Braemar Scotland. Finlay Mor Farquharson acquired the properties at Invercauld in 1539. The Castle construction dates back to the 16th century. The estate is still under control of the Farquharson family through a trust.
The Farquharson clan is a member of the Chattan confederation or Clan Chattan. This is an organization, founded in the 17th century that unites twelve separate clans under a superior chief, for the purpose of mutual solidarity and protection.
There are several Clan Farquharson societies around the world including in Argentina, Australia, Canada, the United States and the UK. There is an exhibit dedicated to the history of the Farquharson Clan at Braemar Castle. Braemar Castle is a possession of the Farquharson clan chief but is leased to the community and staffed by volunteers.
