  • Press conference with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola following their 1-1 draw, subsequently lost on penalties, to Real Madrid in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.
He says he has no regrets as his side did everything they could to win the game, how he picks the players up ahead of a huge game at the weekend, whether he felt confident ahead of this match, whether he felt Bernardo was at all distracted, whether he considered leaving De Bruyne on the pitch, whether he was surprised how deep Madrid played, what explanation he can give for not being able to beat Madrid, whether he feels Madrid v City is the new "Classico of Europe", says that City played well but paid the price for not being able to score and talks about facing teams that play a low block as Madrid did tonight.

I'm reading a lot of comments saying that RM parked the bus and waited only for clutch moments to attack. I mean this was a knockout match with a tied aggregate and Madrid were playing against a formidable opponent in their home-ground. What do you expect? Any strategy/tactic to win within the fairplay limits is acceptable. After 10 years, people will talk about the trophies in the team's cabinet rather than who played a game that was more enjoyable to watch!
Madrid played deeper than they normally do and waited patiently for City to drop, relied on long balls and that did enough to put dent into City's scoresheet. It was a defensive masterclass.
As far as City are concerned, they played a more dominant football but the thing that was bothersome was that no one took chances from outside the box except for KDB (seeing how their attempts were being efficiently blocked inside), and relied too much on short passes even inside the box. Some of them could've been converted had someone taken the chance. 18 corners and somehow we couldn't find the net.
Haaland ghosted as usual. His contributions are miniscule unless the ball linked up to him by the midfield lands straight to his body. People comparing him to Messi need a reality check. Messi in his prime dribbled the ball away from 2-3 defenders who were constantly onto him, made a lot of solo runs after dispossessing ball from his opponents. Haaland, despite his size, couldn't get Rudiger alone off of his balls in the first leg.
Pep is an absolute legend but his puritanical approach to dominating the game with absolute possession could benefit from some variations during days like these. But he wouldn't see otherwise or admit it since it's so deeply etched into his DNA now. City played a great game nonetheless and Madrid had to use every minute of their past experience to hold them back.
The performances worth noting from yesterday's game by City: Walker (his one-on-one with Vini alone saved us a goal or two), Akanji, KDB, Grealish and Doku (Doku breaking through the Madrid wall with his dribbling changed the game).

City beat them last year and this time drawed at the Bernabeu, it's enough for real to learn and to adapt. One thing real does best is to prepare for their opponent and play as needed against them. No club defeats Madrid twice in a row. It's only a matter of 2 matches until the 15 badge comes 👑

It was a draw in LIVE play. Penalties are Free-Shots at goal...To be fair we outplayed them most of the match...especially the 2nd half...Problem was...Madrid's tactical-defence was solid like a brick wall...We scuffed some shots/missed chances...and Madrid were more than happy to take it to penalties cos they were more likely to win it that way than we were [City Aren't Known For Penalty-Shootout-Wins]...i.e. "not in LIVE play" cos we were battering them...Besides, we can't win it every year, the law-of-averages apply here. Whoever knocked us out whether it be Bayern/Madrid etc deserve to go on and win it. Their tactics worked on the night. There was no skullduggery or really bad foul-play...or ref conspiracies. In LIVE play it was a draw...an unfortunate penalty shootout/"Free Shots" at goal had to decide it...We move on...

That "solid defense" unfortunately every big team played against us this season at home. Starting from Liverpool, to Tottenham, to Chelsea, to Arsenal, and now RM. everyone drew against us at FT, it was just a question when our unbeaten home run will come to an end, because everyone started playing that defensive strategy since we won the UCL last year in Istanbul. They all figured what to do against us, and we now need to make changes going into next season if we want to win more UCL's.

@@tataniclovelyStats dont matter. City had the ball for 100 minutes and they managed to score only 1. Real Madrid had the ball only 20 minutes and they also scored 1. Lethality is the most important thing
