- Adding another DIY video to the library, this time another Apple CarPlay installation into a Porsche CDR-31 unit. My previous videos have focused on the PCM 3.1 / 4.0. This job is overall very similar, but the work you have to do on the PCM unit itself is very different. In this video I take you STEP-BY-STEP through the job, with an added bonus - a DIY Back-Up Camera segment too.

Very well made tutorial! One enhancement suggestion: you might want to consider using something like Tessa tape (a fabric tape used for wiring harnesses) on the long camera wire, so it doesn’t vibrate or rattle against the plastic body panels on its labyrinthine journey between the back of the car and the head unit.
Great tip!
James! Awesome seeing you back at it !! Love your content…always so helpful and cheerful.
Cheers from Toronto 😀
Thanks so much!
Thank you for making this video..... now I feel much more comfortable doing this myself
I'm so glad!
Unreal mate. Quite the undertaking, beautifully explained!
Cheers dude!!
Great to see you back james. One of my favourite channels. You should post a few more garage update videos. They were great👍
Thanks, will do!
Excellent work! Need to try it sometime
You should!
Great video! I want to do this in my 991 Turbo, recently purchased.
Sweet!! Good luck.
Wow !!! Your back, hope all is well.
Cheers!
Hi and hello from Germany,
again a nice made video and easy to understand.
I have an 997/2 Carrera S from Sept./2009.
I would also like to install the module for Android Auto/Apple Carplay.
I heard somewhere, I need additionally an AUX in module ???
Is the system you offer complete, or is more needed?
Are there any error messages in the car's ECU? In the German Porsche forum you read something like this.
Thanks for a short feedback.
Andreas
Great! For these Natika cameras, do you need to do anything with the + or ground wires near the molex connector that connects to the camera? Or just hook the trigger wire up to the JoyeAuto and thats it?
No ground wire needed. Just hook it up to the JoyeAuto and you’re good!
Great video!
What is the audio quality with the bluetooth audio?
Is there a wired CarPlay option and would that give better sound quality?
The bluetooth audio is actually really good. It's not as crisp as the PCM bluetooth, but to the untrained ear I don't think anyone would notice. You do have the ability to connect your iPhone or Android phone via a provided USB cable. The quality is a little better via that route though, yes.
I really appreciated your video as I have a 2013 991 and have no backup cam or Apple CarPlay and this is a very viable option. However I haven’t seen any customer reviews anywhere; might you offer a link? Also, please offer your recommendation for the actual backup cam.
Hey Alan. I sell the cameras on my website. Here you go…

Thanks for the video.
Where did you conceal the joyeauto main module?
Right behind the pcm unit itself.
@@AutoAmateur The CDR-31 already has an external box that goes behind (with the display flex cable), so there was no space for the larger box with the computes module.
Thanks for the relply.
I ended up placing mine double-side taped above the driver’s footwell on the inside of the dash space between the steering column column and division for the CDR unit / center part of the dash). The compromise is that it didn’t have enough clearance to connect the USB cable.
Hey James! Which Joyeauto unit should I get for a base 2018 Macan? Thanks!
You need the PCM 4.0 solution. Here it is! www.autoamateur.com/product-page/apple-carplay-wireless-for-porsche-pcm-4-0-911-cayman-boxster-macan-cayenne
Great video. Is the PCM 3.1 compatible for the 991.1 GT3?
Absolutely, if your GT3 has PCM 3.1. The 991.1 models came with either PCM 3.1 (with sat-nav) or CDR-31 (without sat-nav). Either way, I have solutions for both!!
Just got the 3.1! Can’t wait. Thanks
Hello, Will this kit work on 981 cayman 2014 with the CDR31 and the BOSE Sound system ?
Yes it will!
Is it impossible to run the camera without removing the rear bumper?
Can the top engine covers not be removed then using a snake try and run the wire down or up behind the bumper? I haven't really looked or attempted mine yet but I'd love to avoid taking off the rear bumper if I didn't absolutely have to. Thanks
I'm afraid not.
How is the resolution on the backup camera with teh CDR31? I'm contemplating doing this, but have been warned about the resolution being so poor that I'll be very disappointed. but does low res backup camera >> no backup camera?
The resolution was fine! I can share some photos if you want to send me an email to contact@autoamateur.com
Does this unit stay in CarPlay mode when the ignition is switched of and on again, or does it default to standard CDR31 mode each time the ignition is switched off and on?
It works just like the PCM. Whatever mode is on when you turn off the ignition will return automatically when you turn the car back on. The only snag is that it can sometimes take up to 30 seconds for CarPlay to come back, so just be patient.
Hi! Does the camera move relative to the steering wheel angle? Thank you
Not the type I install but you can buy ones that behave that way, yes.
@@AutoAmateur thanks for your reply! New to the community and have been binge watching your videos! Great content, already subscribed. Cheers
Do you deliver to the UK?
Absolutely! Free shipping too!! You coupon code: CarPlayFreeShipping
too bad you did not show how how you mounted the grommet again. since this is wet area, it has to be waterproof
Bah!! Great point. I didn’t include that in the edit. Sorry about that.
