English is a secondary native language for middle-class & rich kids from urban areas in India because all of us go to English-medium, mostly private schools. The language of instruction for all of our subjects, physics, biology, math, history, etc., is English, except for the specific language subject like Hindi. I was taught the English alphabet way before I learned how to write any Hindi or Gujarati (my state language). I am much slower at writing/reading Hindi compared to English, and far more comfortable with the Roman alphabet over Devnagari Script. Our accents just sound weird/different to you guys because we were mostly taught a mother tongue (Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, etc.) before we went to school, and converse majorly in it with our friends & family. But most urban kids like me are equally fluent in at least 2 or more languages including English.

The obscene amount of people roaming in the streets and the overall dirtiness of nearly everything made me want to leave ASAP. I did enjoy the fact that $1 worth of rupees there felt like $5 here.
If you truly believe it's a great nation, I dare you to live there for the rest of your life. Never immigrate to another country for the rest of your life. Also, way to hold a few instances of someone shooting people in public against this country of 320+ million people. It has its disadvantages, but it's still beats living in India. I hope this bright young woman can find theories to explain the dark matter and dark energy someday and get the Nobel Prize in Physics. The problem with institutionalized education is that students start to follow the teachers/textbooks and forget that there are completely new ways to understand and explain the reality.

Sanskriti, no one is saying you have to drop school. The teachers and teaching should change from the current sad state and encourage students to think, understand, innovate and create.
If we all just follow the teachers and the textbooks, no new knowledge would be discovered by the smart kids who may have the potential to challenge the existing views and find the true knowledge. Do you know that top physicists admit that we know less than 5% of the universe? (read about dark matter and dark energy).

BTW Asians are not stupid as you think (except for some crazy Pakistanis). Have a look (I don't know if ur reading this, this is for some people like him) at the no of Indians, Chinese, Malasians, Indonesians and Thai students winning gold medals in major Olympiads. How many Aussies or US or English students have done that ? 40 % of Doctors, and Scientists at NASA are Indians. So, what makes you so arrogant ? Most of US citizens are Indian migrants. It is our Govt. which makes us look stupid. Not the people. Shame on you !

Also, most Americans (at least among the younger generations) think Asians are very smart. We have running jokes that any Asian will get top scores without even trying.
