    I developed this Rattan Ring form from the Chuka SPM Saam Bo Gin. Due to the nature of the ring some techniques had to be slightly modified in order for the form to flow. Using the ring helps keep both hands feeling pressure as well as keeping true with the Yin/Yang principle, not to mention how it helps condition the bridge. Much respect to Sifu Tony Blum and Manuel Rodriguez who keep Sifu Wong's Chuka Mantis going. I hope this makes you :)

    @guiltybystander77 - In this video the rattan ring is being used as a tool not a weapon. The purpose of this tool is to condition the arms, develop proper hand placement, and especially develop transitional tension between both hands. It's a mobile wooden dummy, a tool, like a punching bag.

    I don't know about being similar to WC energetically. I guess it depends how close your looking. I use the larger rings 14-16". I use the larger diameter for conditioning the the bridge as well as keeping both hands alive.

    Air Cycles has to do with how you breathe when you fight. Proper breath control is how we keep our strikes measured and powerful. Learning to control your "air" to get the most out of it is what I call "Air Cycles". Smaller cycles focus on concentrated calculated strikes while in large cycles there is much more movement and rapid strikes between breaths. This is one way our form training is used to build Dan Tian power.

    Thank you, one thing that I am curious about at the beginning of the form just after the opening fist you perform a downward double double phoenix-eye fist punches followed by a biu jee movement (for want of better term), I have noticed similar movements in other versions of SPM as well, what is the function of these movements?

    I've seen people use the ring as a weapon but that is not it's primary use. It's a tool for training. The purpose of this tool is to condition the arms, develop proper hand placement, and especially develop transitional tension between both hands. It's a mobile wooden dummy, a tool, like a punching bag.

    These rings are not expensive and can be found online. Look for rings with 14-17" diameter to work with. I like the bigger ones bc they are more difficult to use and require more attention.

    Your answer reminds me of a Fujian Yong Chun White Crane saying '100 students, 100 San Jans (three wars form)'. What do you mean by the term air cycles?

  • @shinseikenpo

    What size/diameter ring is that? And is the diameter measured by the inside or outside of the ring. Thanks!

  • @RattanRing

    The reason why there are so many versions has to do with the nature of Southern Chinese Martial Arts. Every branch of SPM has its own SBG and some have multiple versions of SBG. In Chuka SPM there is one version. However, the form has many depths so it can be trained fast, slow, different air cycles, emphasis on short power, or emphasis on more complex techniques. 5 different people could do our form and it could look different.

  • @RattanRing
    @RattanRing  Před 12 lety

    Chu Gar and Chuka are the same words/names just spelled differently. As far as the art is concerned the difference is with the lineage. Different teachers may have passed things down differently. Our Chuka Sombogin form passed down through Sigung Wong is different from the form passed down from Gene Chen. It is essentially the same art but many of the drills and philosophies may have variations. Who are you learn Chu Gar from?
