I am on a different mindset. Not a completist or tire of any line by any company. With so many out there and you are right unless you have unlimited money it’s totally subjective. I don’t call myself a collector even if I am near 1500 transformers. I have had them since I was a kid and as I got older I started working and buying more but then third companies came along and it gave us choice. I buy for the build, aesthetic, material and from time to time scale. I am always in on combiners, still my favorite sub group. I remember a time when the well was very dry so I am enjoying all the moments that I can have. It’s not just about shelving it and displaying it, I generally get around to playing with them and that’s my greatest joy so the talk of abandoning any collection is futile because I am a fan first and a kid at heart second and even if I had them all I still wouldn’t tire of them because to me it’s a love not a collection. Collectors imo tend to miss out on what it is to enjoy the toys. Just saying you have it and check it off a list to me is not enjoying what you bought but enjoying the hunt and buying and I am definitely not the latter

OK that is your opinion and I have to politely accept and respect it but from my point of view you're a collector that likes to play with your collection, nothing less but nothing more. Owning near to 1500 TF figures is a bit more then just something you enjoy to play with, if that isn't collecting then nothing else is. For me the only time collecting isn't love is when it becomes an obsession, other then that it's love all the way. Just because you enjoy it in a different way or enjoy some parts of collecting more the others doesn't transform your collection into love or other ppl collections and different way of enjoying them into something less valuable it only means it's different. I had to comment because, even though I believe it may not be intentional, your comment sounded somewhat pretentious, like your way of collecting is love, it's the true way of enjoying your collection and as such it's better then all the other ways. I also enjoy it in a different way then the 4 dummies described but I don't think my way is the way, it's just my way nothing else and ofc for me and every one who agrees with me my way, that in that case becomes our way, is better.

I don’t get the completionist mentality. Maybe it ties back to my childhood and not having an entire line of anything, but if I get my favorite characters represented then I’m totally fine. Do I throw it all away because I don’t get a single figure? No, because my love for the franchise/property is greater than a sense of having every single one.

I don't collect for value or for completion; I collect for nostalgia. If MP Transformers suddenly stopped being made then my collection has lost future potential, but has lost nothing retroactively; I still love what I've bought. I find the "time to get rid of it" reaction really bizarre. If you didn't collect it because you loved it then I think your motive was flawed to begin with. I think this is why people get dissatisfied with their collections: their motivation was always flawed.

Same here, and well said. Also think the "characters I don't like" comment was a bit overstated. I like all of the characters in my collection, some I like more, others I like less, and I might like a character more in the animation than the toy representation, I might like a toy representation more than the character in the animation. My tastes might even change so far as characters because I find as an adult watching the animation it's as much about the personalities of the different characters as it is anything else. So when I look at my collection, I'm still amazed how these designers brought all these animated characters to life as transformable 3-D representations I could only dream of for most of my life. I have similar feelings with movies like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy which up until then impossible from a technological perspective to achieve anywhere near the immersion of realism through computer generated effects throughout the entire film. Like TF, the LotR movies will always have a nostalgic vibe with me.

I think collecting along the way is key to providing the necessary resources and demand for the evolution of the line and therefore supply to continue.
For instance, had no one ever purchased the initial 3rd party combiner releases, we would have never arrived at Toy World’s Constructor.
Similar to the same way I don’t regret purchasing all of the late 90’s and early 2000’s 3 3/4 Star Wars because it lead to vintage collection, and then black series and then 6” and then SH Figuarts and so on.
Essentially, collecting along the way is making the evolution possible.

  • @LatenightLyle
    @LatenightLyle Před 4 lety

Hey Bobby; if I may add to the conversation. It’s all about limitations. Collecting without limitations removes the rewards of collecting.
The more limitations we place the larger the reward. The most obvious being having an endpoint in mind for a given collection; however, there’s many others. For example:
Artificial financial limitations - through most of my collection I have had a price in mind that I won’t cross. The MMC Rumble and Frenzy for example. Very hard to find. I searched for months. In that time I actually found several sets, but all of them were priced above what I was willing to pay. Some of which only by a small amount. Not more than I could afford, just more than they were worth to me. So when I finally found them for a price I was willing to give, the payoff was incredible...their meaning so much greater than had I just thrown money at the first pair I saw. This artificial limitation also simulated the real pre-internet limitation of hunting down pieces at flea markets, etc.
Knowledge limitations - your Leia review is a great example. You bought somewhat blindly and savor the ups and downs of the discovery. Because of this, even if you don’t realize it, the ones that really disappoint you are every bit as important as the ones that blow your mind. The more bitter the lows, the sweeter the highs. The more you already know what to expect the less of an impact it can have either way.
There are lots of other limitations too. The more we pile on, the bigger the reward becomes.
Collecting without limitations (or with loose limitations) is no different than being addicted to cigarettes. You’re just looking for a fix. That has a tiny reward and many people become disgusted with something hey started off enjoying. Some quit, others move to a different drug. It stimulates the same part of the brain. Since it’s just a chemical response with no real emotional ties, the activity becomes hollow and the collection becomes a monument to waste and self-loathing if carried on for long enough.

Like since the original 3 seekers and 3 coneheads are all just basically the same toy with different colors and wings, I would ideally like to get each jet at MP quality from different companies to have 6 different transformations. If they stop selling transformers, I'm good with it, because I got the characters I like, which is the main reason to start the collection. Truth be told, I've caught the RW gun collecting bug, and the costs of this outweigh even those of the TF MP collecting hobby. So any expansive collection dreams I might have once had regarding TFs have taken a big hit. A complete set of G1 S1 MP toys are the main goal for me. S2 and the movie are gravy. I got FT Cyclonus just because he individually is cool but I don't really have any emotional attachment to the rest of those characters. S4 came and went in the flash of an eye, so it totally holds no nostalgia for me at all. But I am getting into The Headmasters anime, so there is a chance I could develop some retroactive nostalgia for that, some day.

The main point of the collection is collect what you want . The problem with waiting for a “line or series or season being completed” is not everyone does that . Far less than the quantity produced of a figure are collected by completist . So in effect you will likely never see a line like transformers completed ( series wise ) for let’s say masterpiece . There are too many characters to justify that . It’s easy in a line that has a limited number of characters . And the cycle tends to repeat ; every few years the brand decided to make a new mold of a character already released because they know it’s a icon ( prime for example ) it will sell regardless . Combiners sell , power masters ...no know I know collecting really gave a crap about them lol . So it’s highly likely low selling numbers will kill off interest and possible futures releases . That’s just my take on it . I could be wrong

I share the mindset of, Fuck Yeah thats cool. My masterpiece line I am only collecting characters that showed up int the TF Devastation game. Granted there are a couple I have collected that are not, but that falls under the cool enough to buy window. My collection is ever evolving and I have a lot stored away due to space or value. All of my G1 is stored. Almost all of my MP is stored. Legends have kind of taken the front seat as of late. Easier to work a diorama. My CHUG figures are stored due to space as well. One day though when I finish my upstairs of my barn, I will have a battle table 24' long where I will have the room to set them up and play with them as I choose and rotate them out every so often. I will never abandon collecting though. It will just evolve like the rest. Not every episode of TF had all the bots in them and neither does my collection.

Next I collect and am getting Into working on custom lightsabers (I don’t think this is something that I will ever feel is “complete” as I will always be working on or looking at a new design). I also collect marvel and dc prop replicas as well as a statue or two (not a completionist with the statues or figures of them) however I am always looking for more props that look like they came out of the comics or movies. I do however have almost everything I can co e up with short or Cerebros helmet Aquamans trident or Spider-Mans web shooters. So that’s gonna be a never ending endeavor. I'm just trying to get my top 5 favorite characters. Star Saber, Astrotrain, and Cyclonus I still need to get, but I already have Masterpiece Ramjet and Roadking, so my collection is about halfway done. I couldn't care less about what company makes it, as long as it's a decent Masterpiece with diecast parts and a good transformation.

  • @brenoferreiraferreira4409

I love action figures per se, so completing a franchise isn't a thing for me. I have my "rules" and I have an idea on how I would like to display my collection and that may mean I want a specific character or a specific rendition of that character but in the end I like action figures so there is no end to my collection. I buy licensed characters but I also buy original ones like 3A, Dam Toys, AX2, Blitzway, J.T Studio, Glitch, Black 13 Park, etc. My collecting "rules" can change and adapt, they're more a set of guide lines based on my taste and the figure quality that help me choose, they are both subjective and objective. What may get me isn't a company failing to releasing all the characters from a franchise, it's when they re-release updated versions of old figures with better sculpt, paint or engineering, that is the only thing that may push me to either give up or sell my old figures. Unless the old ones are very good, when that happens I will just keep the old and buy the new ones. If the new line is just an upgrade of the same exact line I may get a bit pissed, like it happened with the Myth Cloth line from Bandai, specially because they didn't even announce the new line as a new line, they told us it was going to be a side line were they would only release the 6 Athena Exclamation characters but then went on to release every character yet again. Normally I'm glad when a company upgrades a line and re-releases the old characters with a better take and overall quality.

Great video as always, nice to get the grey matter working :)
For me personally I've never seen the hobby as having an endgame, a goal. I just get what I like when it comes out.
I do have collections of singular characters (Brawl, Blackout, Bonecrusher) and have a habit of anytime I get a Megatron I have to get the complementing Prime and vice versa if I get a Prime first.
I have brief moments where I think of ditching it all but that never lasts long and I'm back into enjoying it. We al have lists of characters we'd love to get made but I just take the news as it comes out, not judging my current collection by what could come out in future.

I doubt we'll see the rest of the MT target masters, hell i'm in the fence as to whether they will get made at all by anyone if Mt's didn't sell. Which is a shame as the one they did make was stellar. I do wonder with space being what it is whether i shouldn't just call it quits and pare down, but I continually question what criteria I'd be happy with.

Neca TF2 is interesting as I just got on the line and from who it looks, they most likely will not complete blu team (I'm only in on red team). This sucks also because early red figures like heavy, soilder, and demo man desperately need reissues.

As for abandoning a line/company, I'm not sure about that. I buy what ever looks cool. That's how I got into the Unrustables and Master Made lines. I'm very disappointed that Mayhem Mechanics/MAAS are gone, but I'm not going sell my figs just because of that.

So my goal is to complete season one for both deceptions and autobots and I would be happy and quit upon completion. As far as the rest of my collection I collect what I like and that is almost all impulse. Almost anything dc falls in this category.

I don't agree with needing everything I think that's just to black and white and leads to you buying stuff that you didn't really want in the first place just 'because'. I've dropped a few lines already like MP Transformers by Takara, I didn't like the shift from the great detail, awesome paint app figures they had produced to the less detailed cartoon like figures that cost the same amount of $$. But even when I was into MP I wasn't buying everything, I got Wheeljack, Sideswipe, Bluestreak (diaclone) Magnus and Soundwave. I wasn't just going to pick up characters I had no attachment to simply because they where in the show and Takara had made them, and I'm not going to dump the figures because Takara shifted the MP line, because I still really like those figures and them not being a complete run doesn't devalue how nice they are.

Interesting, I'm happy with my Transformers having all of season 1 and some of the Season 2 toys I had as a child. I'm a bit more worried about Hot Toys completing the Mandalorian line though, we're getting characters that had a minute and 15 seconds screen time well before half the main characters. I think it takes more time to do the face sculpts compared to helmets.. hoping they are all in on this series! Cuz if they aren't and they miss one of the main characters that's going to be a hard pill to swallow.

This is why I stopped collecting SHF Star Wars. The characters out just don't compare to the Black Series. I felt like it would be 30 years before SHF caught up. And investing in SHF kind of scares me when I think how they completely abandoned the D.C. Dark Knight series while Mafex carried it on. I'm curious about these 6 inch JOES coming out. Are they just going to release a couple waves or will they truly put the work in like they did with the 25th Anniversary

This is long maybe some run on ranting sorry took time to think things out and so much to try to ball in.
I was a completist and often jumped on a ton of various things till 2006 - 2007 I had to make a few choices and sold off everything I had minus a few CHUGs thou just Classics and Henkei back then. Later I tried to get back into MP line but stopped, my budget was around 2 grand a year and the lines were exceeding that rapidly. Now Hasbro has the budget around 3 to 4 grand per year with items shipping taxes and all that fun stuff on chugs alone, not counting the endless upgrades and gap fillers stuff that is exploding onto the market and stickers. That bumps the budget into an easy 4 to 6 grand per year. Yes you can say if you really want it you will find a way and being discouraged and leaving the hobby is a way.
Offical MP line is suffering, I see people posting their entire collections and buyers are hesitating abit in snatching them up even on good prices because they are also debating the same path. Right now i think people are holding out on the MP Trainbots and how they turn out but Hasbro is needing to make rapid changes and stay that course because fans are not going stay and this is not exclusive to one line. Prices are still super high event he current discount of MP hound is too high for a fragile toy, yes toy aka meant to be played with right now people are buying a statue they take a risk to make it look how they want. People are complaining about where to put Unicron and FT-40 there is going to be other equally as large figures expected as well to have a complete G1 representation.. we are talking a large room with display cases all over the place, that is another added cost and if you live in say NYC or Hong Kong, that is your entire living space like FT-40 will be the towel rack and toilet paper holder because you go nowhere else to stuff him.
Cyberverse line is making some slight improvements but when you compare the size and cost it's still a garbage chug, build a figure is a selling tactic to try and make a strong line sales so they can promote the line to retailers and have stock clear the shelves, you know what else works staging the wave properly with enough figures to balance the box, if needed recolor a figure look Redwing, won and done apply to other scales like legends.
Bot bots, I can see this replacing cyberverse as the younger age draw, has alot of potential and could explode like the 3rd party legends stuff.
Movie line studio series is kind of doing okay but i think after they complete the combiner sales will drop.
CHUG what a hype train that has become with the best line ever and more QC issues than ever, when i bought a classics and into titans return i was not returning figures, especially ones i bought at a store but POTP and siege ya about 1 in 5 to 6 i have had to return to parts being pined in wrong missing parts like the rear tires (yes plural). Toyhax stickers use to be a tiny sheets 10 to 30 stickers, right now it is almost cheaper for them to make us a new figure that is painted correctly... What really worries me is Earthrise cliffjumper as a deluxe when he is clearly a legends scale figure and is the legends line dead and gone for the most part.
As i see it Offical MP is all but ashes, cyberverse is not worth it, bot bots might catch on but then need more than just a few odd mini-figures, Movie lines is dwindling, oh look another movie prime or a new bee the joy he can stand next to the 50 other ones that look the same. Now ChUGs i see my collecting days are limited i do not plan to sell them for a while likely over my dead body be they are the cause or not is yet to be seen. I get making new figures but they were remaking the same figure over and over ignoring that the fans wanted new versions and then we get a reboot, yaaaaaa.... look another Optimus and another Optimus and another Optimus.... Do you think we might get another Optimus before 2020 is out????
