Just came across your channel, and boy, am I going to enjoy catching up with all your videos. I love this quilt! I have almost finished a tilda quilt myself, but I think I might start this one. I, too, have many projects on the go. When I first started sewing 4 years ago, I brought my work and home life mentality into it, giving myself deadlines and trying to finish them. Then I realised that the beauty of creativity is to let your mind wander from one to another and truly de-stress by removing those pressures.
Thank you for being so calm and soothing and fun! Can't wait to see more from you. Delightful!

I agree that we can often put too much pressure on ourselves and I usually just sew what and when I pleased but I thought that I had let people down by not finishing this project sooner... but that was foolish of me as everyone has been so loving and supportive in the comments. Back to the joy of creating! Thank you for joining me xx

Oh yes! I am a newbie to quilting and came across your channel..I was blown away by this project, and have ordered a shedload of Tilda fabrics to be sent to me in France, together with the Moda backing and the templates you use. I can’t wait for them all to arrive and get started! I am 69, and have only just learnt how to use my 96 year old mum’s sewing machine to start to do patchwork but am really drawn to the hand quilting too. I enjoy your videos, and I am using these templates. I'm 70 years old, American, and I am now in the post--Industrial stage of my life. I really laugh at Americans turning qayg into machine work, and machine quilting setups that cost about $5,000 used. You keep working as slowly as you wish. Thank you for your relaxed style of presentation.

You underestimate the cost of the sewing set up my sister had six machines two did embroidery as well and one did only one stitch. The biggest was $22K. I love handwork and have no appreciation for machine embroidery.

    • @lauraoneal5146
      @lauraoneal5146 Před 4 měsíci +5

I am American and I do take offense to this nasty remark. I do hand stitch but also machine stitch. My machine set up didn’t cost anywhere near $5000 thank you. I got as a gift from my husband for our 39th wedding anniversary a $250 brand new Brother machine that does more stitches than I will ever use. So just to let you know not all of us spend that kind of money and if I hand stitch quilt as you go or do it by machine it didn’t cost me any more than you hand stitching as it was A GIFT. Not all Americans are frivolous spenders. So keep your rude comments across the pond.

I am in the middle of various projects, some hand sewing and others are machine sewing. Quilting is a creative process, and if you're "not feeling it" with a particular project, it's best left for a time when you're in the mood for that. We started each project for a reason, and we'll get them done eventually... lol Thanks for sharing & Cheers

I love using the Grunge pieces for solids. They tie everything together so well in a quilt top. I need to get on my hexies again. I'm kind of waiting to finish up some other quilt tops, though, so I know what pieces will be left to cut my 2.5 in squares from. I just wrap each square around a 1in hexie cardstock template, then baste. I'm not fiddling with cutting out hexagons. Just wrap, baste, stitch together, pull put inner basting threads, and reuse templates for the next diamond set. 😊
I'm glad I found you. Don't blame yourself for being a slow sewer. I like having handsewing projects, as I'm sure many others do. It's refreshing to find a channel like this, when so many set their camera speed so high that they are hard to watch.

When I was younger there were so many quilts I wanted to do and I would agonize at how slow I was because I love the hand quilting even if I piece them by machine. But now I look at it completely different... Age has mellowed me and I know enjoy the process and the journey rather than the end results... I enjoy every minute or hour or day that I am quilting.... I love the creating. I love the stitching. I love listening to audiobooks as I'm working and I put a lot of love into all my hand work.... And I'm sure you're the same. No guilt eventually your 10 or 12 projects will get finished and you can start a whole bunch of new ones!! I have the attention span of a flea and so I always have to have several projects going at a time and hop from one to the other but like I said eventually they all get done and I can start on another bunch of projects. I liked this so much I'm making one for hubby.
I'm using denim for the backing ( used jeans 👖) and different colors of check and buffalo plaid for the insides.
I use a face roller that has a stone rolly thingy for a seam press. I bought it at the Dollar Tree in the US for $1.25 USD. It's in the makeup section.
I'm going to put 5" squares in my hubby's quilt with some embroidery on them.
I know I'm going to do a squirrel with acorns and oak leaves on one. He also has a dog he loves so I might try to find a pattern for one. I think his name in a square. I'm not sure what else. Maybe four or five scattered throughout.

I have more fabric than I need, but I can't seem to stop! I also love the quilt as you go phenomenon, because it's achievable in small bites; sometimes, quilting seems like such a huge endeavor, but with this type of project, you can feel like you've really achieved something with relatively little work. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I started doing this after seeing your first video about it.I have so much leftover fabric and this is such perfect way to use it. I am absolutely loving doing it. I just sit with either the tv on, music playing, listening to a podcast and sew away. So meditative and relaxing. And loving how it's turning out. Thanks so much for presenting it!!

Your quilt progress looks so pretty and very interesting. I think I will try making a few of these bricks, maybe a small quilt to start. I quilt, but haven't seen this type of quilt. I have only watched this one video so far, but it appears that the entire quilt is hand sewn, no sewing machine. Correct? Love your calmness and honesty in your video. Thank you

I put the silicone thimble to work last night. I’m embroidering through 3 layers of fabric and pulling the needle through was a breeze. Da! Why didn’t I think of that 5 days ago. No more pain. Thank you for Great idea.

My daughter has been working on hers. She has several hundred completed but, she's making a queen sized quilt planned. My part is ironing, cutting and pinning. We're using Kona cotton for the backing along with assorted batik for the center.

Your video inspired me to start quilting again after a 10+ year break. I have tons of scraps from projects I've sewn over the years & this is a perfect & perfectly simple way to use up lots of them. It's also a great project for working on while watching TV or listening to audio books. Thank you for these videos. I've enjoyed them.

Thank you for sharing an update on how your Quilt As You Go Brick Quilt. Your previous videos on this project inspired me to start my own #qayg brick quilt. Thank you so much for sharing the project and your process. I''ve been working on it for a few weeks now (when I can in the evenings) and have 14 completed rectangles and 12 completed squares. I'm not sure yet how I will connect them, so I have started the joining process yet. I'm enjoying all the steps in the process, from cutting, to thread basting, to the finishing stitches. Thanks again for the update...please continue to share your progress.

I’m like you, finishing a project is nice…but I enjoy the process more. I always have several sewing and counted cross stitch projects going….like having agood book that I don’t want to end…
then I’ll have a project for a gift and I have to stay on it 😂. For this reason part of my production is going to making baby quilts to stash away as future gifts….so it’s not a mad rush.
I like to tinker…why I so love the process of gardening.
I’ve made one english paper piecing quilt, but only the top is finished. I really loved making the top. I’m currently making a sweater quilt, sewing a 5” cotton square of old sheets to the sweater square and was thinking of assembling the 5” blocks into a larger block and use quilt as you go…now i know this is how i’ll complete this quilt.
    thank you for the video.

I enjoyed your video. I prefer hand sewing too. Protector your hand. They make gloves to help support your hand on the outside. I suffered through 30 years of pain and just had carpel tunnel release surgery. I’m looking forward to no more numb fingers. I also enjoy the silicone finger protectors.

thank you for the inspo rachel - your original QAYG vid popped into my youtube feed out of the blue and i was hooked. and yes! i'm in! i ordered everything i needed yesterday, and am sorting my cotton stash now, waiting in anticipation. i come from a long line of southern (USA) women who did "hand work" of all kinds, and while i am primarily a knitter (knittress?), i find myself more and more drawn to the quilting - maybe following my roots. so thanks again for the inspiration. in a few months, i'm on a boat to alaska, and i think this will be the perfect small project - rather than knitting - eek! - did i just say that? cheers from libby in utah

I love these templates and watched your cutting video. i couldnt get my corners looking nice so i dont use the outer template with the corners cut off, but leave them rectangular and use the instructions from a backing quilt and binding all in one. that gives me nice mitred corners which i love. many thanks for the qayg idea and instructions. your videos are excellent and pitched at a level easy to follow, especially for a 80 3/4 elderly teenager.

Just ordered the template bundle. I think I’m going to use my huge stash of vintage fabrics for the front and the back. It will be quite colorful. Hopefully I can last to make a quilt but it could turn out to be a Runner if it’s too tedious. 😊

Thanks for this video Rachel, so many good tips. I have done the front of a cushion cover in these rectangles which I've finished lately. In between that I've done some EPP and had the idea of doing a little bit of embroidery in the centre hexie. That's spilled over into me doing another rectangle QAYG cushion cover but slipping some slow stitching in the middle of the rectangles i.e.. embroidery/ lace overlay so far. So you see you're not alone in moving from project to project lol. Keep up the good work.
