    When you set you scant 1/4 inch with the tool, you might find it helpful to run a piece of painters tape along side and extend down further for early visibility. Never have seen that tool. So helpful!

    As others have mentioned, your Aurifil spool looks like 50 wt.; if you are wanting a scant 1/4" you do not want to use 40 wt. thread as it is thicker than 50 wt. Some even use 60 wt. thread (in the top and/or bobbin) if they are looking to decrease seam allowance. As I think I mentioned in one of your other videos, I recently learned that not all wt. size threads are the same across thread brands -- making things difficult for us and another good reason to make a test block. Cool scant ruler. Love your fabrics! Thx for sharing your process. And what a beautiful garden!

    Oh my goodness Rachel, you are a bad influence I have so enjoyed your video’s of your beautiful blocks, that I ordered Alice’s wonderland book and love it. Liberty fabric is really expensive and hard to find in the states, so I am going to use different fabrics maybe 1930’s. It is going to be a work on progress, as I have several other projects on the go. Working on a QAYG hexagon quilt at the moment, will work on it for a while till I get bored with it. Then I will move onto something else maybe the Alice’s wonderland blocks. I have never made a quilt with five boarders before, so that will be interesting. Looking forward to your next set of blocks.

      @stitchwithrachel  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It might be 50 🤣 I can't read the label very well, a few people are correcting me the comments but I'll have to go back over my emails to check the order but it seems alot thinner than what I was using. It's a mystery 🤣

    • @dorothyyoung8231
      @dorothyyoung8231 Před 3 měsíci +2

      @@stitchwithrachel you can tell the Aurifil thread weights by the spool color. Starting with the finest thread:
      80 wt: tan spool
      50 wt: orange spool
      40 wt: green spool
      28 wt: gray spool
      12 wt: red spool
      So your orange spool is 50 wt!

    Singer also makes a tool for gauging various seam widths. Same as this one but it’s white and has holes for 1/8 through 1 inch, including a scant 1/4 inch hole. It comes with a plastic bar that you stick to your machine alongside the measuring part to guide your fabric-same idea as using painters tape.

I would love to use Liberty, but can't get to any shows to pick up the £1 packs. I may look at using normal quilting cotton but not sure if this will work with the book. Any advice you can give would be very welcome. 😊❤️

      Good morning Eleanor, this is such a lovely book, so I really do recommend it. If you'd like to use liberty, they sell "sample packs" on their website where you get a good mixture of fabrics for £14, the pieces are big enough. Some of the blocks require long strips and then subcutting them, but if you haven't quilted before, you will be able to adapt the instructions

      Thank you! The coloured squares were precut to 9cm (cm... very annoying when it came to cutting the cream fabric) but I think around 2.5" is a good size as you could also use a jelly roll to have less cutting. Happy stitching.
