  • Touring Tom Petty landmarks and visiting where he grew up in Gainesville, Florida.
The following locations are featured in the video:
▶Lillian's Music Store (112 SE 1st St., Gainesville Fl. 32601). This location was featured in the song Dreamville, which was probably about Gainesville. You can listen to it here: • Dreamville
▶Mathewson Museum (513 E. University Ave. Gainesville Fl. 32601). The museum used to have an exhibit on Petty: gainesvilledowntown.com/2019/...
▶Heartwood Sounstage (619 S. Main St. Gainesville, Fl. 32601). This location features Tom Petty Alley and a mural of Petty as the mad hatter in the "Don't Come Around Here No More" music video.
▶Mural (S Main St. and 16th Main St). This mural features the lyrics "and the world got still.
▶Mural at Sidney Lanier School (312 NW 16th Ave). This mural features the lyrics "you belong among the wildflowers". Petty went to this elementary school and you can learn more about the mural here: gnvurbanart.com/united-challe...
▶Tom Petty Park (400 NE 16th Ave. Gainesville, Fl. 32601). Petty used to run around here during his childhood.
▶Petty's Childhood Home (1715 NE 6th Terrace, Gainesville Fl. 32601).
▶Mural on the 34th Street Graffitti wall, featuring the lyrics "the world was changing fast, but our love was built to last."
Notable locations that were not featured:
▶Wiggo (1010 N Main St.). They currently sell wigs but this is supposed to be the first location of Lipham's Music, where Petty hung out and learned guitar.
▶Mudcrutch Farm (2203 NW 45th Ave. Gainesville, Fl 32601). This used to be a farm where Petty played with his band Mudcrutch. It's now a subdivision.

Some additional useful info from a local:
Lillian's Music Store was, in fact, a music store when Tom was growing up here. In his song, Dreamville, he mentions going to Lillian's to buy guitar strings, which was true. In Tom Petty Park there is a baseball field but I'm not sure you could call the area a stadium. The location you refer to as the 34th Street murals is known locally as the 34th Street Wall which has been here for at least 50 years, probably longer. I've been here 50 years and the wall was here when I got here. The Wall has always been a place of free expression with the exception of obscenity. Lord only knows how many layers of paint have accumulated over the decades. People are allowed to paint and repaint the entire wall, other than the two spaces at the center. One space is a Memorial for five students who were murdered in 1990. The other space is for Tom's Memorial. New incoming students who are not aware of these two sacred spaces painted over Tom's Memorial last year but local artist Blake Harrison, who painted the original, repainted Tom's Memorial. Members of the community contributed to the cost of paint and supplies. You probably know that Tom's first wife, Jane, purchased his childhood home and continues to maintain it. We are grateful to her for keeping the house and yard looking nice.

i am a native Floridian and also grew up in Gainesville. I used to see TP perform in a local band called "Mudcrutch". He inspired me to play bass and guitar. He was a bass player and frontman during that time. Late '60s, early to mid seventies. I miss him. RIP TP.

Nice. I used to live on SW 34th st, where the concrete wall murals are. I moved to Gainesville shortly after Petty moved to L.A. Went to clubs he played in. So glad the Florida boy and his buds made it big. His music will live on forever.

Thanks for sharing! I’m heading to Gainesville in the summer and I’m a huge atom Petty fan! I was so excited to hear that a superfan had bought his childhood home a few years back, and was going to make it a museum. I didn’t hear anything after that, but I searched it and it seems like that fell through and his ex-wife bought the house.

This is truly a Tom Petty week for me. Found his "Buried Treasure" show on XM radio and have been listening to it most of the week. But this video had me from the git-go. I used to go to Lillian's Music Store all the time. I didn't know he sang about it. I had two separate college experiences there. The degree my parents wanted and four year later the one I wanted, plus I lived in the duck pond area and fell in love with Gainesville. Thanks for posting this.

I really enjoyed this video David. I moved down there at age 20 from Georgia, stayed 10 yrs. Saw Tom in a Sonny's restaurant once, and at several shows, loved the guy. Really hit me hard when he passed. You would have been driving on Hwy 441 through G'ville, like waves crashing on the beach. Used to be a bar on it called Dubs, where Tom played one of his 1st gigs. It was the coolest bar I've ever been to, bout 4 levels, a room with 10 pool tables, live music every nt of the week, students mixed with wild locals, man it was something else. The good ole days. Got a new sub here my friend, check me out you get time.

I really wish you had gotten with any of us that grew up with him so you could get it better...Blake Harrison keeps the Muriel up on the 34th Street Wall. Tom Petty did not attend Sidney Lanier School, etc..
Love you guy but you got so much "incorrect", as Jane Benyo Petty, the Mother of his children bought and owns the Petty family home but rents it out. You could have seen so much more by contacting Jason Hedges of "Heavy Petty" who along with his talented wife Sarah and his family and lots of Volunteer's did theTom Petty Birthday Bash in Depot Park until last year due to COVID, and was done virtually with the permission of The Petty Family, on IHeart Radio,
where Dub's Lounge was where the Echo's/Mudcrutch became "the house band", where the song titled "Gainesville" was made and so much more. Any of us would have been happy to have shown you where the real Lipham's Music Store was where Tom use to work, after he gave up being a grave digger and where Benmont would come in and play all the Organs & Piano's, where Don with The Eagles, who wrote "Hotel California" gave guitar lesson's including to Tom as Tom truly loved playing the base guitar, but being the "frontman" he needed to up his skills playing as the lead vocal/guitar, along with Mike Campbell, where Bo Diddley Plaza is, places on Campus where they played, the old Mudcrutch Farm, their first paying gig at the Old Moose Club, etc.... You did ok, but could have really done better. At least you tried.
    Have a great Petty evening!🎸💘🎩🎤🎹🎶🐊🐊🐊🐊

You should've gone to Lake Alice....you'd see some gaters there. Unless they've got it so secured. When I lived there there was no fencing, and the gators would crawl up on the banks. Can't believe I used to feed them. That was before I knew how fast they could move! ha!
