Been using the Delter every morning for a year and it’s on its last legs. Haven’t seen anyone mention this online yet but all the plastic around the top that the cap screws onto is frayed and has hairline fractures from multiple use and screwing on and off. Constantly leaks around the cap now as well. Not good. My aeropress has lasted 5 years so far and as good as the day I got it.

I have both - I think that coffee from the Delter is more consistent and less prone to bitterness than an aeropress. The coffee brewed is generally lighter and closer to a pour-over style. It is probably a better solution for someone who doesn't want to invest time in thinking about the brew (like my wife) but conversely it is fussier and harder to use which is why she insists on using aeropress and hates the Delter. The aeropress, when combined with scale, timer, and a prismo makes far superior coffee to my tastes but if you just want to chuck coffee in and move on, the Delter has its advantages. If I had to choose only one, no question it would be the aeropress.

    Disclaimer: I am Australian...
I have a Delter coffee press and love it, I find the coffee to be a sweeter and a little lighter in colour more like a pour over then the taste that my aeropress gives me which is a bit heavier and a slight bitter note. In saying that I believe both do an amazing job at what they’re designed for.
My normal brew in the Delter is 15g coffee at a medium/fine and I only pour 100g water in and do a very soft 50g infusion I then add back to the 200 line (I guess making it 250g of water in total) and plunge again 100g and 100g. I’ve never bothered putting the rubber plug (coffee dosing tool) back in and just press on the 3 wings of the plunger and have never been scolded, but I am aware of it always.
I also don’t run the puck dry into the cup but place it over the sink and dry the puck there and then push it out into a bin, which might be why I don’t get any bitterness from that final press.
Love your videos James you got me hooked on this wonderful world of coffee. #fanforlife

One of the key things is Delter is not an aeropress.. It works differently, the coffee bed is separated from the water, vs aeropress both in the same chamber.
I've been getting much cleaner coffee with more clarity and less bitter on the delter.
    17g coffee med grind size
    92C water
Add 40ml water, press for the bloom wait 30 sec, meanwhile add 210ml, divide that into 3 presses, aiming for total brew time of 2:30
Pretty good results, though so much room for multiple techniques and running tds tests!

I’ve been waiting for you to cover this forever! Haven’t watched the video, but I have one and love it. I’ve also briefly used the aeropress and I have to say I like the Delter experience better
Edit: I normally push some (about half the chamber) air through the puck over the sink to compress and get rid of the water inside, then lift the plunger up about quarter of the way, then unscrew and plunge. The air gets the puck out easily and a quick rinse to get rid of the residual grounds is all that’s left. Also, it takes a bit of practice, but the original didn’t come with the black lid so I do it by gripping the sides and plunging it in stages - one preinfusion and two push throughs. That means I can use it over a collapsible cup! I use aeropress filters for it, and have no problems whatsoever about the slightly bigger size- the cup still comes out clean.
I should also mention I got the Delter before I tried the aeropress, and that’s probably why I favour it over the aeropress.

I bought a delta press a few months ago. Aeropress filters work fine in it as long as its positioned properly. I totally share your thoughts on the cleaning, its real pain compared to most other brewers. I keep trying to persevere with it but find it to be quite inconsistent compared to a kalita, v60, chemex etc which could be because of the spray pattern not being even like you mentioned....and those of us that bought the delta after it had left kickstarter didn't get the little black cap for the top at all so its just burnt palms for us 😂

I think the Aeropress was really well designed for convenience and ease of use and that's a bit lacking in the Delter. James - Enjoyed your review. I'm a long time Aeropress user, having used paper filters and most of the metal discs including the Able Disc and Ameuus (both o2 and 01 10k). I figured I'd give the Delter Press a try. I was impressed after my first brew and found it to be very close to a V60 or Kalita Wave pour over in quality. I agree with many of the points you raise in your review - the loose fitting cap, the close but not-quite-the-same-as-Aeropress filter size, the plunger-gasket that sometimes gets twisted, and you can't fully eject the coffee puck for a simple cleanup. The bottom line to me though is that it makes a great cup of travel coffee that is consistently closer in quality to a pour over than I've been able to achieve from my Aeropress.

Maybe i've got thicker skin but I lost the cap and still didnt have any trouble plunging with my palm. Gotta disagree with your opinion of the cleanup though as the coffee stays in its own chamber, so the rest of the delterpress doesnt get oily the way my aeropress did. Always love your videos James!

You haven't mentioned that you can brow double to amount without the need of replacing the coffee grind. However, it'll become harder to push when you double the amount. I've done it with 24g medium grind coffee with 400 ml water. Another thing I noticed is that if you brew twice back to back, things will get massy and gasket in the plunger will act weirdly.

Hi James, I agree that the channelling is a big problem, with slight pressure will cause strong water punching thru the coffee ground hence channeling, but if we push too gently might end up with longer extraction time.
Regarding the water volume splitting, you can first pour specific amount of water into chamber then press. after then press then fill another round of water, with this you can get more precise control of water volume per press rather than looking at the marking which is not very accurate .

    Nice review as always, Sir.
I never really liked the Aeropress for many reasons (ugly, useless numbers on it, cloudy coffee etc, everything is o.c. subjective)...and I was really searching for a fast, easy way to make drinkable (not competion-level-) coffee at work.
So I pregrind 12g in little containers, put it inside the Delter when needed and fill boiling water to the 200 mark in it. Preinfuse, press, done.
No scale, no timer...no tilting the "inverted Aero-tower", no force to press the plunger.
    A nice, clean cup.
After using, I press through some air to dry it and let it sit until the next brew. Yes, the cleaning is a bit more work...but no real problem.
So, FOR ME, the Delter Delter solves some problems and I enjoy using it.
Best wishes, keep up the good work

Nice summary. I have a Delter, and I'm a longtime aeropress brewer, so i approached it in the same regard. I echo the frustrations and feelings you have - it's so close to the aero that it's easy to use it just like an aero. Your review has quite rightly pointed out that it's not an aero - I'm going to give the Delter another shot, brew on it with an open mind and treat it as its own thing. We'll see if that improves the result. Thanks for the video.

I just did a head to head of my trusty Aeropress v the Delter Coffee Press which I had delivered yesterday. Did 12g of very fine end of medium grind to 200mls water in both.
Did a blind taste and was able to identify my regular aeropress cup in the taste test. I did have marginally less bitterness in the Delter brew.
    Both cups were very good.
Both brewers are fun to use and experiment with. So many variables.
I quite like the plunger system on the Delter and how it allows you to add more water without removing. It gives the potential to make a bigger brew.
Clean up, and thankfully I watched this video before I ever used the Delter is as James said not as straight forward as the brilliantly simple Aeropress. However it's still not difficult. The gaskets can be a little finicky to put back on.
If you enjoy brewing coffee with different methods then you will like the Delter.

Hey James, just like coffeeology, I love that you're more relaxed, it's almost soothing to watch you talk about a product, which is kinda weird, but there it is. I think you should consider making your audio mix louder, though. Your balance is good b/w you and the music, and your consistency of speaking volume is great, but in the context of other videos being louder, it means I have to turn up my volume to sufficiently hear you, and then the next video I watch, I go deaf. So you're great, but please consider your overall volume in the context of people also watching other videos. Great stuff, though

I’ve used this for the last few months, nothing else. That black little bit is meant to be the dosing cap, but I’ve never even used it for that. It’s stayed in the box. You can just be careful and use your fingers on the sides to press it down. Also durability wise, I’ve had to replace all the rubber before I used up all the 100 included filter papers so you’ll want to keep an eye on that.

I find it works very well with a very slow 30-50 ‘bloom’ then 100ml then 50ml with quite a bit of air in the top. Probably the same extraction time as a v60 so quite slow and get best results this way. From memory the idea is to be as gentle as least disruptive as possible to the bed.

I brought a Delter via the kick-starter when it was launched. I don't have an Aeropress so this was my first experience with making coffee this way. It took a little while to get used to. Finding the grind size that suited me and working out how long I wanted to brew. My recipe is Fill to the line above the 200mL mark with your water. Raise plunger to 50mL line and slowly plunge and let sit for 30 secs. Pull up plunger to 100mL line and plunge again. Then plunge the remaining water. A downside I did find was that twice now on the second plunge the rubber shower jet has drawn in a tiny bit of coffee grounds from the puck. The water I was about to plunge through the puck was already going brown with the floating grounds - not ideal. Never the less I have kept experimenting and I am mostly happy with the Delter. If I am looking to make a fast brew it is definitely the way to go.

Disappointed to see the gasket as that's my biggest issue with the Oomph apart from the ridiculous size. Great review James. Have you considered the Trinity One brewer? I picked up this pretty soon after it came out. My initial expectation was that it would replace my borrowed Aeropress but it won't do that. It's totally different. It's closer in style to a V60 or some other pourover/filter coffee, but just easier to do. The place it's now sitting in my routine is when I want a filtered coffee but need to save time, or space, or when I just don't feel like going through the whole ritual of a V60. I think as an Australian brand, they tried to shy away from tying it in with filtered coffee cause that's just a naughty word over here. Instead, they talk about things like "reduced agitation" and "control". However I found it was really useful to introduce me to a lot of the concepts, brew time, structure and the like that I now use with my V60.
The problems though are mostly what you've mentioned. I don't bother with the cap on top (they sent me two for some reason), I just carefully press down on the fins, live on the edge. The seal on the plunger often gets twisted for me as well and there seems to be a bit of water leaking through. The shower screen (I think they call it the "jet seal") is problematic. As it wears out, coffee sometimes backwashes into the upper chamber, I don't know what impact that has, but I doubt it's intended. It definitely does not distribute water evenly, I think just cause it bows out when pressure is applied to it. If you're not applying enough pressure, it'll only come out of the center few holes, and I'm concerned of what happens when full pressure is applied. If you peel back the paper after you've used it and dissect the puck a little bit, it looks like the coffee just gets blown to the edges and there's very little in the center. Looking at it pouring through a glass mug shows extraction is not even. It's the classic problem that added complexity adds to fragility.
Pros, I don't find the cleaning too cumbersome, It looks a million times better than the aeropress, the mechanism is pretty cool, it's the quickest easiest way I can think of to get filtered style coffee with a manual setup. I absolutely love the concept. But for now if I've got the time and capacity, I'll use my V60. If they release a v2 which fixes the problems with both of the seals, I'll be first in line to grab it.

I guess it's worth talking about the fact that the method the aeropress originally showed was a similar idea. Coffee in, water on top, push the water through - it's through the use of it over time that people have discovered different ways of using it (czech aeropress championship 2017, one of my fave methods :) )

Very nice video, and a comprehensive answer to the (slightly clickbaity?) question posed in the title. The Delter is an interesting concept, but it does seem a little fiddly in comparison to the product against which it is so clearly positioning itself. I have owned my Aeropress for close to ten years(!) and I love it to death - it makes a very good long cup with little waiting and barely any effort. It would take a very special product indeed to make me even consider using something else, and sadly the Delter just doesn't seem to be that product.

Enjoyed watching this. Lucky I didn't see it first or I wouldn't have bought the Delter. For people like me the Delter is easier.
As a non expert user the Aeropress was much harder for me to consistently get nice tasting coffee from. I would stir too little or too much, or let it steep too long or not long enough. On the Delter those steps are eliminated so I can't get them wrong. I use a kitchen kettle and would tend to pour it too early or too late. On the Delter that is easily recoverable, on the Aeropress it was just another mistake that made the coffee taste bad. Occasionally when I did make a nice cup on the Aeropress it didn't taste so good towards the end because some of the grinds got past the filter. On the Delter that never seems to happen.

    • @MrDarren690
      @MrDarren690 Před 4 lety

I'm surprised you say that the Delter is easier. I use my AeroPress almost exactly like the written instructions--a scoop or two of coffee, water up to the 2, stir until smooth (which isn't a lot), press, dilute, punch out the puck. Then again I don't own a Delter so you might have the edge on me in that regard.

  • @pnnorton
    @pnnorton Před 4 lety +1

Interestingly the first time I heard about the delter press was when tasting coffee at a roaster and the girl serving us mentioned it as an aeropress that was easier to press. I find that interesting because I've never thought of the strength required to operate an aeropress as a problem that needed to be solved but it was a problem for her. So I guess everyone has different experiences.
I'm also not sure about calling the aeropress "only" an immersion brewer. The way I think of it, if I had all my coffee evenly distributed in my brew water, once I've pressed half my brew through I now have half my coffee grounds forming a cake on the filter paper and I'm now pressing at pressure the rest of the brew water through that cake at some amount of pressure. So at the start of the push it is an immersion brewer like a french press, but ends up similar to a delter at the end. To me the delter removes this complexity and makes it brew one way, which in my mind misses the point and just tries to get closer to what an espresso machine does as an end in itself.

I Have been using the Delter regularly since it where launched, and i agree with allot of the design related problems. However I think it solves som of the clarity related issues I had with the Aeropress that I used for years prior to getting the Delter. And yes it’s not as versatile as the Aeropress, yes you need to plunge it slowly or you’ll get a muddy brew, yes it’s not nearly as easy to clean, however you can lift the plunger and re plunge it over a bin and it will be a bit more clean than demonstrated.
I can personally live with the nitpicking parts because it dos make a very transparent brew that is relatively easy to make.

Now seeing the ideas of the delter I would make a couple of similar modifications to the AeroPress piston to make it easier but still its quite straight forward even without. I use just about espresso grind size, low amount of water straight outta boiler, and fairly quick brewtime and I'd say I get 80% of what espresso is, and to me thats f***in awesome from a piece of plastic and rubber.

I think I may have bought the first design of the Aeropress, and the plastic they used for the outer sleeve cracked, rendering it useless. A lot of people reported that the rubber boot of the plunger is the first to fail, but other than the polymer breaking down into rubber and a nasty residue for the same model I had, I've never had the boot fail.
I bought another Aeropress, of course. 😁
