  • This is an in depth tutorial of how to change the chain and sprockets on a motorcycle.
    Here I am changing it on my 2008 Kawasaki ER6f aka Ninja 650r.
    Afam chain and sprockets -1 tooth on the front.
    Torque settings
    Rear Axle Nut is 108 Nm
    Caliper Bracket Bolts (Front) 34 Nm (Rear) 25 Nm
    Front Sprocket Nut 127 Nm
    Rear Sprocket Nuts 59 Nm
    Speed Sensor Bracket Bolts 10 Nm

      Thanks, it's awesome you think so. That is a really good tool to have, I also bought an adaptor so it's now my drill also, no need for multiple tools 😊

    Probably should’ve watched this before I did my chain and sprocket but figured I’d check and make sure I did it right 🤣 great video bro. Biggest thing I was worried about was my new front sprocket looking different than the stock but glad my new one looks like yours

      😂😂 Thanks for watching anyway 👍 Yea the stock sprockets have a rubber cushion to slightly quieten the chain, same on most bikes I think, but aftermarket almost always don't have them.

      It’s an interesting design to say the least. I bought two sprockets and an ek chain for my 06 ninja 650r. Have you ever had a clip master fail on you?

      @@asj12 Didn't see this comment originally sorry. I personally have never had a problem, but I got a little confused as to why it came with both on the larger chain for a more powerful bike. AFAM themselves contacted me as they were supposed to send me a new set last year, never did! but they said at the time that they recommend we use the other master link rather than the clip. I used it as it's a bit easier and thought "if it is there it must be ok", but now we know.

    Cheers, useful. I had a very tight rear right slider, took me 4 hours today to get the wheel off. No amount of tapping with the wood block persuarder, wd40 or gt85 would work. Used an impact gun and wd40 and 30 minutes later got it free. Turns out corrosion had rusted the hub on my ER6F to the aluminium slider and the brake caliper mount bracket. What should I grease the shaft with to prevent this seizing again. Hear copper grease is a no no.

      I'm glad you found it useful. Sounds quite bad, bit of a cleanup job now hey! Use an all purpose high temperature grease, copper grease is for non moving/mating surfaces to prevent them from becoming seized. Good luck getting it sorted, thanks for watching 👍

      @@HalfdeadRider cheers, technically these areas are non moving, but subject to temperature fluctuations, will look at the greases I have, will fit a new rear disk as the wheel is off. Plenty surface rust to clean on my 2007 model!

      @@Nordkapp65 Sorry mate, I assumed by hub you meant the axle for some reason, either grease will be fine then. But on the axle, I like to put some all purpose grease.
      I've got my swingarm off for a refurb now, my '08 is quite bad on that, it used to be in Aberdeen before I got it and probably looked after quite well but not perfectly.

      I'll take a look bud, but that's how they are generally put in (and how it was when I took it off of course). I can't think of another way other than putting it upside down lol, but I will make sure I have a look 👍

      @@ItsGosho I also think I know why you feel its fitted wrong now, some people would bend one part over the end of the hub, no need as long as it solidly in place and not sticking out.

    I would definately replace the tab locker and split pins with new ones though.

      I assume you mean the lock washer for the front sprocket, you can use them at least four times, by bending at a different point each time. More times I'd possible if it's not weakened, but best to replace them when used the four times though, if not before.
      Split pins depends on condition really, but some do weaken and break after just one or two uses. Basically it's something to consider each time, but not necessarily something you have to replace. I always have one ready, but only use it if the old one snaps or is otherwise in bad condition.

      As I've always been on a tight budget I've always tried to reuse where possible. As I trained and for some time worked as a mechanic in my younger days, I trust my own judgement too.
      Many people think in the same way you do and that's fine, a YT mechanic once replaced perfectly ok to use spark plugs, I said just clean them, inspect them, check the gaps and they'd be fine.
      But he also said for the price you might as well replace them, I see that as a waist of material, and money, especially as a set of iridium plugs cost £40+ for a four cylinder bike. They also can last for tens of thousands of miles, up to 100k miles in some cases.

    Have you ever had any issues using a quick link? I know lot of people complain about them on forums and what not and have horror stories of them falling off but I find it hard to believe without installing it the wrong way (open side forward) or not seated properly.

      No, never had an issue and that is what comes with the AFAM XS ring chain, a very high quality race chain, so can't be bad. I had two on my 125 😂 👍

    How do you tell if the chain is tight enough and not lose? my first bike 650R !

      There is a measurement in your owners manual you check the slack with a ruler, different for many bikes. There will be dedicated vids to tightening your chain. Sorry if I didn't mention it in any way in the video.

      It may tell you in the owners manual, or check the parts list on a Kawasaki main dealer site, but I think it was 15 stock. I did -1 for a little while before going back to stock. The parts site I use for my bikes - www.kawasakioriginalparts.com/

      Great tyres in my experience, these ones do not have a lot of miles on them yet. But when I got this bike two years ago it came with A-ST's on it, I done over 2.5k miles on those, in all weathers and had no issues.
      After getting a screw in the rear, and knowing I was going to change them before the M.O.T. due to the front being worn, I checked the dates. It turned out they were very old for tyres so where hardened, but still worked well. That was part of the reason for going for them again rather than the newer designed A-ST 2's or A-GT/A-GT 2's or other comparable tyres from other brands.

    Did it change your speed?

      I went down 1 tooth on the front sprocket, that makes it accelerate quicker but you lose a bit of top speed. You would not want to go up on the rear too, that would be to much on these torque monsters with quite a low top speed and good acceleration already.
