China bullet trains: Capsule soft sleepers

  • ** WARNING - Capsule sleepers are no longer available on the Beijing-Shanghai route. In addition, sometimes the China Train Company shows capsule sleepers on some trains but they are actually regular soft sleeper compartments. Travellers only find out while getting on the train. **
China overnight bullet trains now have a new category of soft sleepers referred to as "capsule sleepers". These are individual sleeping compartments.
These individual sleepers can be found on overnight D trains. On these trains, the speed has been reduced to make sure that travellers get a full night of sleep.
These are available on overnight D trains between Beijing and Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing and Guangzhou and Shanghai.

I was lucky enough to have traveled on this train earlier in the year. I don't think it's fair to compare it to the compartment sleepers of generations past, but rather business class on long haul air routes, the level of privacy and lay flat bed, along with the cleanliness is unparalleled. There was onboard wifi, although it was spotty at times, and I could not fathom that I was moving apart from the times when the train was going around a bend. I paid $86 for a top bunk from Shanghai to Beijing, plus $12 for an overpriced bento box. It's a dream really, as it negates the need for a hotel room, the arrivals lounge at Beijing did also have showers, albeit quite spartan, rounding off the overall spectacular experience. I also noticed that all the platforms in china are level with the trains, and this sleeper had designated accessibility bunks on either ends of the carriages to accommodate those with disabilities. A+ for China Rail, better than any product I've seen anywhere else, even European and Japanese overnight trains. Hope they roll out more of these.

16 hour trip at an average speed of 100 mph (160 kph) = 1,600 miles traveled. Chicago to Denver - 1,000 miles, Chicago to NYC - 800 miles, Chicago to Los Angeles - 2,000 miles. New York to Dallas - 1,600 miles. Imagine how much easier long distances travel in America would be if we had this civilized, high speed, over night option. This train makes the case for nation wide high speed rail very compelling. It would be a huge infrastructure project which would create millions of jobs. China is already there. America now needs to follow by example.

Really interesting solution seeming like it's offering privacy as well as a large number of beds. Maybe it could be an alternative to couchettes in european overnight trains

The use of "box pockets" to minimize length of each set of beds is ingenious -- this should be introduced on American trains .

I used to travel between Jinan (a city in north China) and Shanghai 20 years ago on old sleeper trains. The beds were so small and I was often waked up by the vibration when the train started or stopped at stations. The condition and speed of this sleeper train is only a dream for me at that time.
Here is a link of the old sleeper train:czcams.com/video/-DmhjvT0bGI/video.html

it will take very long time to build, before building at least 5 years discussing, and ticket is very expensive since you have choosen Shinkansen, it is 3x more expensive than China´s bullet train, your ticket would even be more expensive than in Japan, since you have to import everything from Japan. still wish you can enjoy this technology in the future.

This model is called CRH2E, but capsule sleepers are only available on the third generation of CRH2E. So, even if the China Railway app shows “CRH2E”, it doesn’t clarify which generation it is, so this is why you cannot determine whether your train is a capsule one or not before you actually see it.
