*Did you use the 44 KT example to make sure people don't consider jumping into a fridge out of fear of radiation?*
Short answer: No
Thank you. Saved my time.
Long answer: get a concrete house with super thick walls and get in to a lead Lind fridge then maybe
If you forgot the can opener before you shut the door it's over.
We all know technically speaking it's impossible to survive. The main purpose of the video is to know the reason why it's impossible to survive.😒

Basically, if a nuke goes off in your city, get in a bunker, or out of your city. If you can't do either, get In a fridge, but it won't help that much.
The ideal scenario is that the enemy doesn't use nukes at all, realising they are inhumane and everyone lives happy ever after, but the truth is, nuke wielding psychopaths do exist.

Forget the radiation, Indy should have broken his neck inside a fridge falling from the sky
Edit: same case for every normal human in a protection suit (ironman, iron patriot, venom etc). Surely it protects from attacks but every hero landing from the sky would damage the human inside because of huge pressure. You should decrease your velocity to a critical limit (by parachute or rockets on your feet)
Well said and as I said IMO you can't survive in a fridge, underground in a bunker of course but eventually, food/medicine water will end and then you must go up fallout style but without the critters only radiation to keep you company..!! lol hehe

I mean I wouldn't care much about getting incinerated so I'd take my chances with the fridge, I would prefer to have some chance then 0
If everything goes wrong, you even do not need a coffin😉. One problem could be, that you'd suffocate in a freezer after some time. This is because you would produce an underpressure in the fridge, which would prevent you to open the door by yourself from the inside. So if the blast does not open the door, you might not come out anymore🤪.
@@patrichausammann I love how you use goofy emojis while talking about suffocating inside a radioactive fridge with no way out.

😆
how to survive a nuke
1. don't live in the target area
Before watching the full video, here's my guess from having heard the question discussed before (just the fridge bomb shelter):
Yes, in some situations. If its an old, lead lined fridge and outside the main blast radius, then yes, it would protect you. This is, I believe, why it would have worked in Indiana Jones. However, that's just one possible situation. More modern fridges aren't lined with lead, meaning they wouldn't stop radiation more than anything else, so you're better off running further and putting more walls between you and the blast than hiding in a fridge. And if within the main blast radius... well, it does vary by how close you are, but for the most part, you'd be killed while in the fridge. The fridge wouldn't do much to protect you from the force of the blast, and even less to protect you from the heat, so the further from the center, the more likely a fridge would protect you from the blast. To put it simply, distance is always better protection, but if you can't run away completely, there is a point where jumping in a fridge becomes safer than trying to run further. Its not guaranteed to work, but... well, its better than nothing. But again, this doesn't help much for the radiation part unless the fridge is lead lined. If it isn't lead lined... you'd have better chances of winning the lottery multiple times...
The only thing that saves Indiana Jones from the nuclear blast and the deadly radiator is the suit of plot armor.
Finally, we're asking the real questions.
Everybody gives Indiana Jones crap for hiding in the fridge but if you remember he was scrambling around looking for anywhere to hide. Hiding in the fridge was alot better then anywhere else in the town
Gets inside of fridge, survives blast, eats cheese afterwards in celebration, gets major stomach ache and has to shit.

Survival town AKA Nuketown
An interesting follow up video would be to see how much would you need to be below the ground (whether encased or in dirt) with what amount of overhead would you be safe from a nuclear blast!
I'm pretty sure Indy also would have had his skin violently ripped from his chest when he was being dragged behind that truck in Raiders, surely killing him. We're supposed to suspend our disbelief for these things.

just say no. the Shockwave can't touch you without your consent
Finally someone smart
I always thought the ONLY reason it worked in the movie(besides the fact it's a movie!)is that it was specifically made to have a lead lining, AND, was also made stronger than a regulation model refrigerator. How he survived be blasted across town inside, essentially a safe without being reduced to a bag of meat paste, that's a question, NO ONE can answer, like, why Joker hasn't been executed, since, he obviously knows what He's doing is illegal, both morally, legally, and ethically, but, continues to be placed in institutions he seems to have NO problem at all leaving, whenever he wants.
and when does he put his make up
The answer is simple the fridge was lead lined and Indy was bigger than the inside of the fridge meaning he had little leg room which prevented the shock from going towards up his body crippling him this and allowing him to stay safe within the fridge and the blast radius
Survival town? More like Nuke Town!
Call of duty reference 😛

All I hear is I need a 6 inch lead lined fridge stocked with essentials inside of 2, 3 meter thick wall of concrete...
Lead Lined fridges were a thing back then and the idea was it would push him beyond the radiation zone when it was blasted out of the building, in reality the fridge flying would have killed him regardless of radiation, and whatever building it was, the walls clearly weren't which enough to help either.

Who has at home a fridge that can be opened from the inside ? When you close the fridge, there is no more way to open it, and you have to wait till someone else opens it for you. But since all others near the blast also went into their fridge...
Plenty of kids have died playing hide and seek with those old fridges. Luckily newer fridges don't have locks, just magnets.
I think most fridges in the uk can be opened both ways since they have no latch
You open them from the side they have no handles

@@Nir-vana Yes, it has been like that worldwide since the 1970s. It's not only safer but more importantly, much cheaper.
Reminds me of Fallout 4 when you have to get Billy out of the fridge after he turned in to ghoul
Dude had been in there for like 200 years
No. I jumped straight into this comment section on seeing the tumbnail to warn you because my dad's friend's kid hid in a chillibin in the garage for hide and seek and died.
They said that the vaccum suction of closing a chilli also makes it very difficult to open from the inside, so even when you feel yourself running out of air, opening the lid is too much hard work to be able to get out.
He was only in there 10min before they *found* him dead.
Sure a chest freezer has more air space than a chilli, and an adult is much stronger than a child. But a chilli uses a weak seal and a freezer uses a very strong rubber one.
I'd still say you only have at most 20min in a freezer before you pass out.
Do not use a chest freezer as an emergency bunker.
Do not even practice using it for an emergency hideaway.
Do not let kids play around with small sealable spaces while playing.
If you want a hideaway that you can jump in then use a bathtub or something. Not a sealed space that would asphyxiate you.
Actually I just did the maths properly and my estimate was off but close.
You would pass out and probably die within 36min.
But my guess was far closer than the video who suggested multiple hours.
Working below
At 10% conc CO2 can cause anything from convulsions to coma or death.
Once you reach 10%, even if you don't die and are just convulsing or in a coma, you aren't able to open that freezer lid, you aren't concious enough to try, so will die regardless.
((Vol air in med 12ft^3 chest freezer - vol human is 1.76ft^3)*(limit of co2 is 10%))
/ ((No. People)*(hourly co2 of human 1.7ft^3))
((12 - 1.76)*(0.1))
/ ((1)*(1.7))
= 0.6hrs = 36min
oh
No they died because of the way latches work on old-school refrigerators. They latch from the outside and there is no way to open them from the inside no matter how strong you are.

In Indy's defense, he drank from the Holy Grail in the previous movie. That's why he survived.
No. Watch Last Crusade again. The Grail Knight clearly says the grail cannot pass beyond the great seal, that is the price of immortality. A minute later, the grail crosses the seal, the temple collapses, the deal is off. No immortality for Indy.
@@planetofsoundpodcast9859
He still could have gotten a lot of health benefits from drinking from the grail; perhaps Indy's body was turbocharged and stayed in the peak of health for the rest of his life, which explains why he was still active and running about in 'Skull' and 'Destiny'
@@Leprechaunproduction”no immortality but he gets the power to tank a nuke one time”

The short answer: it depends on how powerful nuke is and how far you are.
You are not going to wait a sec and determine the distance to search for a freezer when you see a mushroom cloud of the nuke. (If you are lucky enough to survive then happy life with nuclear mutation or death in next few hours.)

Well ok so yeah, a few things. The seen was built for fun. But in that period fridges might have still used a bit of lead llining. It was a thing. Lots of stuff had some amount. I guess they the thinking was it might help help freezer or ridge keep the stuff inside cool. If that's the case. It might provide some protection from radation. I doubt it would help with being sent flying through the air. thought.
Even if the odds are thin(even probably 0) I'd still give it a shot 😆
