      She was flawless until she left the game due to injuries. When she returned, she was never the same. She didn't absorb power as well and her forehand would land much shorter.

      @Fontsman Před 2 lety +1

      I think it's very sad that after Martina retired very few of the next generation attempted to incorporate her brilliant net game. Instead, her long term rival Chrissie, became the template with her two hander and metronomic strokes. With a few notable exceptions, much of the women's game then became a procession of all out hitting, with the volley all but extinct. Venus Williams could have become a brilliant S&V exponent especially at Wimbledon. Today I can see the younger players moving more to the net, such as Barty, Raducanu and Fernandes. They exhibit a more rounded game with more options than say the likes of Sabalenka who basically just tries to blast everything and the rigid style of Pliskova.

    I believe this tournament in Japan was the week after the Australian Open ended in Feb. 99. Hingis just successfully defended her Australian title third consecutive year.
    Little did she know she just won her last grand slam singles title.
    1999 alone would emerge Serena and Davenport as two big power hitters who would hasten Hingis’s departure from the game.
    Graf was one of the last great players from the previous era and she would win the French (against Hingis in a contentious, drama-packed, controversy-filled 3-set final) and retire before the U.S. Open.
    Hingis would retain her #1 ranking by year's end but not before experiencing pain and heartache at the three remaining grand slam tournaments for different reasons.

    This match was a microcosm of what would happen to Hingis's career in the months and years to come. She was being run all over the court by a taller harder hitting opponent, relying on her tremendous groundstrokes and court sense to pull out the victory. As the power era emerged however, her style became too difficult to sustain.

      I wonder if one of her team entourage at that time during the Seles stabbing in 1993, was indirectly involved in the whole incident. Yes, Steffi was obviously not playing Seles nor was she ever been seen inside the stadium, but the fact that the perpetrator who made such move to stab Seles with a knife was German, and he could have been paid to do so which threatens Seles career and her life. Her whole career was practically destroyed after the stabbings, because of someone who is a self proclaimed Graf fanatic.

    Hingis is not intimidated by the Graf forehand. In fact, unlike most players who over play Graf’s backhand, Hingis makes the rallies less predictable. Her shot selection is superb.
    Had Hingis kept her head and emotions under control like she does here, she surely would've hoisted that French Open trophy a few months later.

      There was too much hostility and she wanted badly and created too big pressure. She was also not tactically prepared for such possibility which was very likely. Her mother let her live in that pink baloon of her own instead of warning her that she is not loved by all. And she was arrogant indeed which is one of the reasons I admired her confidence and honesty, she was so funny and sarcastic although rude with many remarks. She didnt expect all that in the finals so it turned out as a trauma.

Also as a tennis fan, I watch lots of tennis videos here in CZcams, including Graf’s. But almost in every video, at some point, she seems not too pleased with lines calls. So if you tell me to name all these matches where Graf complains now, it’s difficult to do and it’s not worth my time. But I guess you’re a big fan of Graf judging from all those statistics on another post, it’s fine and good to see from a fan. It’s just that despite respecting her for all those great records, such attitude during matches is a huge turn-off for me. Sometimes I think if HawkEye system had existed while she was playing, we would have probably seen her less complain. Because she would have been proved more wrong than correct.

I actually met her in Eastbourne in 1998 when she was in a similar mood and quite frankly, she was horrible. I think so many of the top players on any sport aren't particularly nice or balanced people. To have that drive and to live in that world, isn't normal. It leaves a lot of them with a lot of problems when they retire. Chris Evert for example has been vocal recently about just how much tennis damaged her as a person.

    The hostile French crowd against Hingis played a part in her unraveling in Paris against Graf.
    Everyone knows Hingis would've ended up beating Graf in straight sets and win the French title she so desperately wanted.
    Not even McEnroe at his ugliest deserved the sh*tty treatment the French crowd heaped on Hingis. She let that controversial line call against her contribute to her meltdown. Once the French crowd got on her case and wouldn't let go, that was the end for Hingis.

    • @moviefan4life166
      @moviefan4life166 Před 4 lety

      I know that was a critical moment but it’s always so hard to bet against Graf. She won 22 slams for a reason, had a few great wins in that event and would have made it a real battle no matter what. Also, I don’t ever remember a player crossing the net and technically, as the commentators pointed out, she should have been defaulted for simply crossing the net as she did so she was lucky it wasn’t actually enforced. The French crowd is so tough, they brought Arantxa in ‘95 to absolute tears in the ceremony and that was for only questioning a few calls. I remember the commentators saying how unfair they were to her and how sad it was to see just how badly that had gotten to Arantxa.

      Her loss was definitely provoked and ignited..her meltdown started as she was already irritated by then by only minor part of crowd, decided to lead too many battles as she felt jeopardized and lost focus and control afterwards. Graf also contributed with her disguised hostility and agression as it was clear towards end of match that Hingis looked scared of her too..nevertheless, pitty she lost but she was not prepared and let go her control and focus too easily.

      @dinomijatovic3921 Před 3 lety

      @Max E Oh yes it ended up perfect for Steffi that day, and she deserved to win but tension was obvious and Steffi started to play mind games towards end of second set and also openly showed to crowd that she was enjoying, she even chanted with them during Martina's toilet break. All that made Martina feel humiliated and hurt most. Steffi also got additional kick when she sensed not just mental but also physical deterioration and played some highly inspired points where she manipulated and toyed with Martina. And then when she sensed final blood she was pushing and speeding up the game and on few occasions during final drama with umpire decided to further intimidate Hingis with agressive and pushy sentences and tone. Everything was legal and effective but there was some malicious and cruel joy from Steffi. I think despite the fact Martina insulted her in previous statements and never wanted to give her public admiration, that should not be reason for supporting almost public sadistic torture and prohibition of an 18 y old as a revenge.

    • @dinomijatovic3921
      @dinomijatovic3921 Před 3 lety

      @Max E i have nothing against Steffi in fact to me she is probably GOAT in womens tennis but it is a fact she used "tennis" crowd that day in her favor..see her face expressions and gestures towards crowd at the end of 2nd and beginning of 3rd set. Of course she was aware Martina would know she had good time on court while she was away and that the crowd would go even wilder upon her return. You dont see all on tv and toilet and locker room are not very far. To me, frankly, quality of match, especially considering the weather conditions and tension, was superb, but behaviour from both players was disgraceful as they were having their own personal tantrums and crowd got involved too much.
      P.S. I dont see how Seles and my opinion on Seles is related to this discussion.

Watch any match from 1990 to 1993 against Seles. Watch Graf vs Shriver 1988 Virginia Slims Championships. While I loved Steffi... she had an attitude problem when she felt things weren't going her way. And it began in the middle of the second set in this match as well. Even though Graf is getting older and older. It's getting to the end of his career.
    It's still so hard for Hingis to beat Graf.
    They have faced each other nine times in their careers.
    Graf won 7 times.
    And came back after Graf's 97 break. They played 3 games. Graf won twice. In one, Hingis was awarded a set 6-0.
    On top of that, the two of them have a Grand Slam record against each other, and Hingis has never beaten Graf.
    Grafy always beats Hingis in tennis grand slams.

      Ultimately winning tournaments became a titanic challenge for her against the power hitters. She could beat any one of them on her day but having to play them in successive matches just ground down her energy levels as she would have to do a lot of hard running to chase down the drives. Australian Open in 01(?) was case in point. Venus Williams in the QF Serena in the semi and Capriati in the final. Add in the ridiculous heat at that tournament that year and she had nothing left. Even then she was on the brink but failed to close out the 2nd set.
      After the massive ankle injury in 03 and a couple of years away from the game, she was never likely to get back to the very top though she was still top 10 ranking.
      I loved watching her play doubles though. It demonstrated so much of her skill set because power was much less of a factor. And the fact she won so many doubles titles with so many different partners shows just how good a player she was.
