    so glad this finally posted!!!! I remember watching this match in college. pretty prophetic. a mostly unheralded SW, unseeded, playing the World #1 her first time and in a QF. She 6-1s her in the 2nd, has Hingis throwing her racquet in the 3rd and had 2 match points at 5-3. Inexperience showed up but I'm sure Martina saw the writing on the wall here. Epic match.

      Injury didn't end Hingis's career...she got overpowered out of the WTA by the big hitters like Venus, Serena, Capriati, and Davenport. Hingis's footwork was pretty amazing, but her serve was a huge liability. Finesse can only take you so far. If you want to win slams, you better have powerful serves, great footwork, stamina, lethal forehand/backhand and smart defense. Serena has most of these qualities (if not all) while Hingis didn't.

    The Swiss Miss beats Serena, who of course goes on to be the GOAT. Hingis is an underrated player, she did not have the physicality of other top players, just an amazing will to win, a great variety of shots and was very creative on the court. This is a perfect match as Martina was still near her prime and Serena was starting to become the force of nature she developed into.

      Hingis benefited from Graf's absence, but her eventual decline began when the power players started refining their games. They basically blew Hingis off the court. Graf did so consistently, too, owning a 9-2 h2h against her.

    C'mon man, only 5 GS titles???? 99.9% of players go through their entire careers wishing to even compete in a final. I think most players would kill for just 1 GS. Serena went on to become arguably the greatest of all time, but don't discount Martina's contribution to the sport, and she's still playing great doubles with Flavia Pennetta.

      agreed. I always refer to the 1997-2001 as the true golden era b/c of the variety of players, games & generations. there wasn't a true dominant player at that time. so it was all a game of matchups and divergent personalities. glad to see the WS truly takeoff in 2002 but it wasn't the same. today's players should thank the bigger paychecks on that era that made the women's tour must-see tv and more popular than the men's.

      Yeah, Graf's early retirement, Seles' attack, and Hingis' foot injury really stole what was rounding out as the greatest era in tennis history. Would have been awesome watching Graf and Serena playing Wimbledon finals another 3-5 years. Hingis and Serena at Australia for 10 years would have been incredible. And I thoroughly believe Seles would have passed Evert at the French. I guess every sport has those what if questions but women's tennis sure had an unlucky 10 years from Seles' stabbing through Hingis's debilitating injuries.

      You are sooo correct. Then Patrick improved her technique, and then her athletic ability started to wane because she relied on her serve and strokes.

    Serena's inexperience showed when holding Hingis on few match-points and when serving for the match - today's Serena would have put the match away without even trying too hard.
    This footage simply shows that even tennis Greats had moments of inexperience in their rookie beginning - this is Serena's.

    I love the exquisite shot making and brilliant placement Hingis had, all but lost with the Women's game now - began with the Williams (but to their credit since they did play in the age of strategy, they've played so long, they play more of it than the current crop, save Wozniacki), unfortunately was strengthened by Sharapova, such a boring age of just power hitting, Henin and Clijsters was truly a breath of fresh air... and today well, let's see, there is potential but the temptation to just hit your way through the game has brought dividends to the Williams and its the current status quo.

    The surgical precision drop shots. The cleverly angled passing shots. The retrieval skils. These are the reasons why Hingis decapitated the competition during that time. Talent-wise, she is the greatest of them all. Her unwillingness to ride the power bandwagon meant she is out of contention during the power era. But that won't take away the fact that she is the most talented tennis player of all time.

    • @dontlaughtoomuch11
      @dontlaughtoomuch11 Před 9 lety +5

      ***** "Natural" she was extremely insightful and knew how to read the game, but she lacked a lot of power when the game changed with the Williams sisters...
      And Martina didn't have that extra step a onehander has, notice how top players who play one handed backhands always have that extra step in the court to create more angles in comparison to a typical two hander...
      That was Maria's best match ever, but Maria isn't near the category of Henin or Venus for that matter...
      Overrated, overhyped and received easy draws most of the times putting Serena in the other half, who usually has the more difficult players to face! Which reminds me, how was the beatdown Serena gave to Maria in Wimbledon a couple of weeks ago? Didn't it feel good? :)

    • @dontlaughtoomuch11
      @dontlaughtoomuch11 Před 9 lety +2

      ***** Why do you call that linewomen an asian weasel type?! She was doing her fucking job!
      Should she be intimidated because we're talking here about Serena?! There are cameras everywhere, admitted it wasn't very clear wether it was or it wasn't. From my perspective it did look like a foot fault But to say that lineswoman was gunning for her, is just crying wolf!
      And Serena was blatantly lying during her interview, and one of her team members gave her a signal to "be quiet" during the interview because they signaled to her that she was in fact lying trough her teeth! "I never make any foot faults in this tournaments and suddenly I get called so many times on it, it's clear...." (sudden silence and looks up to a certain person in her management) and gives a distracted impression and finishes with "whatever, I don't know"... Hmmm....
      Regarding Serena being a biological male, I never made such assumptions... I do believe she's classless and can't swallow a loss and never gives credit where credit due. Serena lost because of her own damn fault...
