    Hingis had probably the highest tennis IQ in history. What she lacked in power, she more than made up for in the quality of her shot-making. Also, she had such great timing and saw the ball with laser-like focus.

      I agree, had she been able to add little more power to her groundstrokes, specifically her forehand and serve, she could've been the best female player ever.

      @JamesFrew1 Před 2 lety +2

      That’s all true, it’s really too bad she lacked upper body strength because her forehand really sat up to be attacked (if only she could have flattened it out and hit through it instead of using a fairly weak topspin) and also put some juice on her serve, she’d be top 3-4 instead of relegated towards the 8-12th best player all-time so far.

    Hingis is obviously physically outmatched here. But tennis is more than physical. She had quick reflexes, good movement, good variety as well. She definitely maximized her talents. Of course Venus was a physical specimen the likes of women's tennis had not seen in it's 100 years or so. Incredible power, movement, reach, etc. Two amazing players.

    Thank you for uploading this match. Quality of the video is superb! Both of them 17 at the time. Great rivalry 🎾 Martina's movement and backhand was exceptional! As were the winners coming outta Venus's racquet.
    This should have been the finals.

    Venus was still so gangly and inexperienced back then. She had immense power and athleticism but didn't yet know how to harness and coordinate it.
    Hingis's ability to redirect the ball and open up the court was sensational.

    What a shame, tennis changed forever with the Williams sisters, a change i did not like.
    Gone was grace and timing and placement, on came power, power and more power.
    I suppose like everything tennis had to evolve.
    Martine was my favourite because she utilised will and brain power with patience and structured a point to win.

      Sauf que les sœurs Williams ont aussi énormément de talent, pas seulement de la puissance et des capacités athlétiques. Il aurait fallu regarder quelques uns de leurs matches aussi. Tu me fais rire 🤣 et Hingis avait un temps d’avance en carrière, expérience etc puisqu’elle s’est réellement lancée sur le circuit pro en 1994 alors que Vénus a attendu 1997. Tout de même ... !

    I thought Hingis hit with more power from both sides, in years of 1997, 1998 than later years!
    Why she hit with less and less power from 1999... ?
    Bcoz she changed the racquet or she didnt see the coming power tennis age??
    She and her mother should have known this, to develop a more strong forehand...

    • @jujumusique1305
      @jujumusique1305 Před rokem +1

      I guess they expected power tennis to remain limited and with high unforced errors (like Pierce in the late 90s). But new racket tech gave more control while preserving power. The most successful players against Hingis (the Williams sisters, Davenport) all managed to overpower Martina and kill her percentage tennis strategy. In fairness, she didn’t lose to many other players in the early 2000s.

    I think Venus has made some errors during her whole career. One of these errors is that she keeps hitting the ball back at her opponent. She really should have hired a coach, besides Richard and her hitting partner. Too many short balls. Looks like the strategy was just getting the ball back in court.
