Add up the amount of streams of each song. As for how they know these are the most streamed, they probably just look up the most popular albums (Of the genre) that released that year, and the one with the most streams is put in the video.

nirvana is hard rock but def not pumpkins lol, the only moderately hard song I can remember on that record was Zero. That isn't to say they don't have a metal influence, though. And the stones obviously are just normal rock, in the same vein as The Beatles albeit a little heavier, but not even hard rock.
