You are so inventive!
I feel privileged to be able to watch you at work.
Thank you.
Wow, thank you Robin, that is so nice of you to say 😀
What a festive idea for this bowl!
Thanks Vernon, I really had fun with this one 😀
Oooh, shiny! With almost golden/opaline colors!
Thanks! 😀
Very nice! And what a great way to start off Saturday morning, Feb. 10, 2024. I last heard the term 'grot' when I was watching How Clean Is Your House years ago when Kim or Aggie used it. LOL!
Haha I remember that show 😂
Just beautiful. I love the red stain.
Thanks Mary 😀
Beautiful, I love the stain and that you can still see the grain and such 😍 beautiful job Mike!!
Thanks so much! Happy holidays 😀
I was unsure about this when I started watching. I really, really like it and I thank you for sharing your idea.
You are so welcome Lacey 😃
It’s like a kaliedoscope bowl!! So cool and the wood grain really pops!!
Thanks! I had no idea if this would even work but I'm so glad I tried. Thanks for watching
Mike, what a perfect piece of wood for a festive Christmas bowl! Moldy, dusty, grimy, knotty, chunks missing….”perfect” !!😂😂 At least it was easy to turn and the festive rim turned out quite nice. Another fantastic piece!
Haha thanks my friend 😀
Awesome, Mike! Turned out to be a beautiful holiday bowl.
Thanks so much, my wife has started to threaten to put up Christmas decorations already
Einfach Wunderschön 🤩 ich muss auch mit Epoxi anfangen. Was man da alles rein machen kann, der Wahnsinn 😂 Deine Schale ist klasse. 👌
Haha, du kannst fast alles hineinlegen, was dir gefällt :)
That is absolutely nutty but beautiful! If you ever try to do something like this again, I would like to suggest painting the bottom of the inlay area black so that the tinsel/sparkly bits would really pop rather than getting a tad lost against the light unfinished wood background. Just a suggestion, though. Great job on this piece, Mike! 👍
No you are quite right Tom. By the time I had the same thought it was too late🤣
Didn’t think I was going to like that inlay, but wrongo 😂
Fantastic as always Mike.
Haha neither did I, but when I get an idea in my head I sort of have to do it and just cross my fingers 😂
Love the sparkle epoxy work, not so keen on coloured wood bowl.thanks for sharing mike
I'm not great at colouring but I do try lol
Wow I never would have thought beautiful bowl Mike thanks for sharing your great talents 👍
Thanks Tim, that's so nice of you to say and thanks for your support :)
Very unique and beautiful bowl!
Thanks Jason, that's what I hoped for. Does not work every time but I do like this one. Thanks for your support.
Shiny!
😀
Hi Mike, initially I was sceptical about how that inlay would work, but I'm happy to say I was really impressed!
Awesome work as always x
Must admit I was worried too :) thanks Jaxx x
Very nice! I like the red coloring. Beautiful piece as usual, Mike.
Thanks Ted, seasons greeting to you and yours :)
Because of the yellow from the resin, it may have helped the tinsel to pop more to add a small blue tint to the resin. As it is right now, it looks like fire opal, which is my favorite opal. 😺
Thanks for the tip Megan, that's a good one 😀
Very creative. I like how you think!
Thank you! 😊
There is no way I would have thought of using tinsel. You surprised me again, well done Mike, brilliant work
Haha, thanks my friend, I saw the tinsel in the shop and thought 'well why not' 😀
Beautiful bowl Sir! I just bought a mini lathe a month ago and have turned several small bowls with it. Can't wait to get into larger ones.
Excellent, good luck with your turning journey, stay safe and have fun. There are many good groups on Facebook you can join that can offer help and advice. I'm on a few so hopefully I'll see you on there.
❤So stunning ❤ You've got such vision.
Thanks Audie, this was a lot of fun 😀
Beautiful! What a great idea!👏👏
Thank you! 😊
this is spectacular! thanks for the wintry sparkle!!
Your welcome Dee, glad you liked it. Happy holidays :)
Vary pretty
Thanks 😊
WOW!!!
Thanks 😀
Wonderful.. .sort of reminds me of a Doulton plate...Thanks
Thanks Peter, and thanks for your support :)
Hi Mike, what a terrific job the red on the bowl really enhances the grain pattern in that maple inside and out, and the sparkle does come across in the video but i bet its better in real life, I think you were right to pre-mix it as otherwise i think the sparkly bits would just lay on the bottom of the inlay with just clear resin over the top. It is a lovely shape as well. it's funny how sometimes the wood will push us in a direction we don't necessary want to go but end up with quite a spectacular finish.
Altogether another great job, another great inlay
Thanks Steve 😁. You are spot on about the bowl telling us where it wants to go, it just leads and we follow. The shine is amazing and the grain in the maple is just beautiful.
Thanks as ever my friend.
Talk soon
Mike
Gorgeous sparkly bowl for Christmas, well done Mike, and thanks as always for sharing your incredible talent with us 😊
Thank you so much Fiona, our decorations are starting to go up and I'm starting to wonder where this one actually is 😂
@MikeHolton hope you find it
@@fionacrouch1732 me too 😆
Gorgeous…
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful, amazing work 👏 👌 exquisite for Christmas 🎄 😊
Thanks so much, I need to make another one of these 😀
Beautiful man
Thanks Pat 😀
Its a beauty
Thanks Boris 😀
Looks great, that finish 👌
Thanks! Field Maple comes up real nice😃
Very good 👍
Thanks 😃
I really like the way that came out! great work!
Thanks Loui, much appreciated :)
Hi Mike, to use your 'new favourite word' again, I must admit I thought you might be bonkers to both stain the wood (would it diminish the grain?) and to add the sparkly inlay, but my, how wrong was I?! You are a master, Sir. I love your creativity and design, and your willingness to try new things for our benefit. Thank you for sharing this, and an absolutely stunning result. PS I hope your Wife was equally as impressed with it!
Thanks David you are too kind. Yes thanks my wife loved it, you should see it in daylight, it's quite something! Thanks as ever for your support, Mike
@@MikeHolton I would love to see it in daylight - when and where is your exhibition to be?!☺
@@davidbaxter5132 that is a great question!
That bowl is divine!! I love the red and sparkle for the holidays!!! 🎄
Haha it is a pretty one 🤣
BOM DIA DESEJO MUITO SUCESSO
My tree identification is just about as my skill to flap my arms and take off flying. I’ve turned tons of spalted maple and have never heard of field maple. I liked your choice of color for the bowl. Quite a nice contrast. Brilliant as usual Mike.
We learn something new every day. Where are you from?
@@MikeHolton I live in Ohio in North America. I always get kind of excited talking with turners from all over the world. Finding out about different species of wood they may have access to that I don’t Like sycamore. We don’t have that around the US anymore Have you ever had a chance to turn any Box Elder yet Mike?
@@k9insomniac783 No, not yet but I do hope to one day. Field maple is in America but it was introduced not so long ago so not really a tree you will find many of. Sycamore is beautiful to turn, it has an amazing grain very similar to maple.
@@MikeHolton maybe one day we might have to do a wood swap. Or I might just send you something to turn. I know most wood turners have more wood than they could ever use, but really cool wood is hard to pass up.
@@k9insomniac783 now that sounds like a great idea!
I have seen worse blanks. Any blank can have a layer of mold, especially if the conditions were right for spalting.
I was keeping my fingers crossed you had sufficient resin to fill the groove and did not have voids once you turned.
The inlay was messy to mix and pour, then a "bonus" mess of the static debris clinging to everything.
The bowl looks terrific. I would have preferred the inside to be natural wood so easier to see the nice grain.
I had not heard of field maple, so I learned of a new species. I looked this up. It has been established in the US, but I have not heard of this locally. Another species, Norway maple came from Norway and is more common locally. Norway maple can have some interesting grain and colours. I have several pieces for future turning projects.
The inlay should look terrific in certain light. Glad this experiment worked out. Well done.
Dave.
Hi Dave, to be honest this is my first turning of field maple and it did not disappoint. I do have another blank so I will be making another bowl and I promise not to stain it. The grain is quite beautiful and it turns so easily, just wish all blanks were like this. The inlay was a huge faff but I think the end result is work it, the sparkle does not come over on camera quite as much as I would have hoped for but nothing I can do about that.
I had plenty of resin left over but can't help thinking it may have been better putting the material in the rim first then poring in the resin, perhaps next time.
Talk soon and thanks as always for your support.
Mike
Adding the material first may be more tricky depending on the viscosity of the resin. Easier for an air bubble to get trapped in the material. The small torch may not be able to get the heat deep enough in the material to pop all the bubbles. I would try this on a sample block first. Too much work on a bowl if this other method does not work.
I can imagine the camera is not able to do justice to the sparkle effect.
Dave.
The red really made this pop! Beautiful results against the sparkly inlay.
Thanks! I was not sure this was going to work but so glad it did :)
Yeah, SPARKLY is pretty much the only description you can give the tinsel. I like it with the red dye too. I wonder how it would look with one of the other minor reflective colors that is in the tinsel like blue or green?
Thanks and I'm not sure, I keep looking for more interesting tinsel to put in a bowl 😀
LINDA peça esta cor incrivelmente LINDA
Boa noite e obrigado como sempre :D
Very nice, Mike. I can tell you that, in 12 months, you will have a new lathe, purchased from Yandles, together with 10 times the number of subscribers 🌞
Hahaha, that is the funniest thing I have read today. thanks Ray 😂
Interesting inlay. If youre worried about covering all the wood with tinsel you could just put on a base coat of metallic (silver) paint. That is if the resin sticks to paint. Different base coat colors will give different effects, always good to do small test before hand. Moved yet?
Thanks for the tip, Not yet but it's getting ever closer 😀
Beautiful!
I wonder if you could remove wood from the underside so the light could come up through the bottom of the epoxy (the outer ring of wood would be floating then)?
Yes you can and at some point I'll be giving it a go 😉
I think just the inlay and no red would have been pretty as well
Thanks Christine 😀
Mike, on a previous video you used shellac with raw linseed. Can you tell me what proportions you used please
Sure, it was about 60-40/70-30 oil to shellac, you can buff it in, sometimes you may need a light wire wool with very fine wool and then another coat to get the best result. This mix is often referred to as shine juice. Hope this helps, Mike
Not my favourite piece. Don’t like the red stain. But good job with the inlay. 👍
Thanks 😀
The inlay is brilliant, the dye not so much.
Thanks Joe I'm not great at dying 😃
@@MikeHolton - it’s not just you, everyone who tries it only ends up emphasising the tool marks and makes it look so amateurish. Very shiny but unnatural and just not as good as the wood’s natural appearance.
Oh i do hope you were wearing a filtering mask when you were taking off that mold. The spores would not be nice in your lungs.
Do not worry I was 😀
