- My largest ever glue up of wood to make a bowl and I made a mistake, can you spot it?
Three woods in this segmented woodturning project, were combined to make this beautiful bowl, ebony, sapele and oak. I hope you like the combination.
The bowl was finished with Yorkshire grit and Hampshire sheen.

Gorgeous work! “Mistake” sounds so harsh. It doesn’t take away from the beauty. Broken patterns add movement to a piece… Some more subtle than others.
Thank you so much Chris, they are wise words, I love it but it's driving my wife's OCD up the wall 😂
you put two strips between the Ebony instead of three like every other section. Awesome channel, thank you!
Thanks and you got it right 👍
An interesting piece Mike, ebony looks tough going! Every zebra has a unique stripe pattern!
Haha love it, that is a great way of looking at it, thanks 😆
My new CZcams channel spot me 🙏🙏
My OCD picked it up immediately. LOL But it is still a brilliant god as always. Love the choice of woods you used.
Thanks William, it's driving my wife's OCD up the wall 😀
Even with the mistake in the pattern, it’s still a beautiful bowl. Great job with the glue up - no voids and tight seams.
Thank you very much! I must admit the gluing up part worked well, I've had a good look and I can't see one void.
A pleasing outcome, well imagined and executed
Thanks Ruth 😀
Had you not put that in the title I would not have looked for it! Beautiful as always my friend!!!!
I know, but it keeps people interested and watching 😆, thanks so much for watching Dee x

Very nice. The wife liked it... we may have something similar soon...
Haha, have fun making it 😀
Für mich sieht die Perfekt aus 👏 Klasse geworden. 👍🤗
Danke Michael, das ist bisher eine meiner Lieblingsschalen 😃
Very nice bowl. Well done.
Ebony every 3 except when it is 2. LOL So easy to make this hiccup.
I use Titebond III for my glue-ups. In my shop, "Murphy" would have a good time if I attempted to glue this assembly in one go. I tried a glue-up in one go with fewer pieces and "Murphy" moved something.
"Murphy" also likes when I combine a hard/dense wood next to softer/less dense woods. The turning tools can cut both, but when I go to sanding, I get a wavy surface since the abrasive takes off more of the softer wood than the harder wood. The piece I am thinking about is now part of my gallery of failed projects.
Dave.
Haha, 'Murphy' did try hard when I was adding the extra clamps but I managed to move just a little too fast for him this time, but it was close 😂
Very nice. The pattern is fine. The finished bowl is so pretty that it will likely go unnoticed.
Thanks Ted, I do like the way this one came out.

Phenomenal mate, just phenomenal - I saw the slight serendipitous accidenr
Thanks Mich, I do like the way this one came out.
I like that mike I do glue ups now and then turn out pretty nice. You did good
Thanks Jim O do like doing these, they are a lot of fun 😀
Stunning bowl! And I am so glad you notice as it was driving me crazy :’)
Yep, you and me both 😃

Beautiful piece! Have to say I saw the "mistake" being made and was talking out loud to the tv hoping you'd hear... :D But as everyone is saying, imperfection makes the piece more special. Really enjoy all your videos! :)
Thanks so much, I did laugh when I noticed what I had done 😀
New lathe, terrific.shaping of the bowl and the use of the chisels, fantastic. Counting up to 3, needs some work
😂 and I only have one excuse, I can't talk and think at the same time. Cheers Steve.
@@MikeHolton I remember somebody saying that about one of the American presidents, that he was so stupid he couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time.
It was a beautiful looking bowl though, with the lovely contrast of colours, I enjoyed that one
@@thehampshirewoodturner Thanks Steve, it was Gerald Ford that the story was about, I've heard it as well, I was told this by my dad when I was a kid.
Beautiful, well worth the effort I'd say!
Haha thanks Susannah, this was a lot of fun 😃
I saw you do it straight away and my OCD went into overdrive lol... Oh well. It's unique now. I'm really liking your vids, so peaceful 👍
Haha thanks so much, my wife still can't look at it 😀
It reminds me of jasber Conron designs from the 60 classic tableware. I think you stumbled into a artistic masterpiece,
Thanks John, I think it's time to make another 😃
Oooooo ! Found one from a year ago i hadn't seen. I'm very ocd & noticed the stripe change from the very beginning.Beautiful bowl!!
Haha thanks Nan, this bowl drives my wife crazy lol 😃
The wood pattern.. Or the way you lay out your pieces are not mistakes. They are artistic choice. IF you hadn't said anything about it I doubt there would have been many folks that noticed it at all. Keep up your beautiful finished products please.
Thanks for that Patricia, I will do my very best :)

Nice bowl. No matter what! Well done
Thanks Chippy, I do like this one :)
Beautiful as always mike. It was a very minor mistake, i'm more impressed that there were no minor voids in the glue up!
Thanks Michael, I've had a good look at it and there are no voids at all, I'm surprised at myself :)

That is beautiful! I noticed the error before you glued it. Just makes it even more unique 😃
Haha thanks Donna, how is the move going? 😀
@@MikeHolton so far it’s not. Still looking for somewhere trying to find something has been a monumental effort so far but I’m not giving up. I did put my sticker on my machine though 😁😁😁
@@donnagreen7386 Haha well done and good luck 😀
Still turned out really pretty Mike & you have to be really critical to pick on ' the mistake'
lol thanks 😃
It’s ok we’ll forgive the artistic license. Definitely not a mistake. Nicely done !
Lol thanks, I appreciate it 😊
Stylish beautiful result 👌 exquisite classic 😊
Thank you so much 😊
Thanks Mike 👍The bowl turned out great. If you didn’t mention the mistake a wouldn’t have noticed. I hope you factor in a heater for your new workshop ! Cheers
You will have to wait and see 😀
Very creative Mike. I love it.
Thank you! Cheers! 😀
Heh. Watching your back catalog post-'having to move' video. If the mistake is 2 non-ebony slats between the ebony, I spotted it during the glue-up and was talking to the TV: "Mike! Count the slats!" Even knowing the video is a year old. Why do we do that? LOL
Beautiful bowl, regardless. Unless a person is a natural counter, they'd never notice.
Haha thanks, my wife has OCD and noticed straight away lol
I noticed the change in pattern instantly as you were gluing up. Yes, unfortunately I’m one of those people. I thought perhaps you were one who likes to keep things interesting that way, and that you might just be testing us for fun. Anyway, a brilliant piece in the end; and the only ones who don’t make any mistakes are those who don’t do anything, right?
Thanks Mike and I completely agree, mistakes are common and expected especially in my world. I would not have done this one deliberately as my wife has OCD and the bowl drives her crazy, actually, thinking about it, I may make another 😂
Turned out beautiful after, lovely contrast of colours......The ugly duckling
lol thanks
Imperfections class as rarity! One side goes 3, ebony, 2, ebony. Still looks great though!
Rarity! this means I can put the price up 😋, love your thinking.
That is stunning. I like the way it looks tartan when it’s spinning slowly.
Haha I never noticed that before but you are right lol
Cracking job mike really like this
Thanks so much Robert 😊
Not mentioning it as I like the end result. Sometimes an "error" adds intrigue and character to the end product. I like it. Well done Mike.Cheers
Thanks Peter and yes I think you are right 😀
Your new lathe did well! Great looking bowl Mike and it hardly noticeable, super well done! 😃

Noticed it....noticed it, i was shouting at the tv before you started the glueup 😂😂😂 cracking looking bowl otherwise 👍😍

The wood pattern isn’t a mistake. It makes it a talking piece. It came out great.
Thanks Clyde 😃 and thanks for your support

Thanks! 😀
Would never seen the so called mistake without being told to look for it. The work is beautiful none the less I personally think it's gorgeous 😍
Thank you very much Troy, best thing is the missing strip drives my wife crazy 😀
Amazing work, I’m looking at a record lathe myself and it’s good to see one in action

Great looking piece
Thank you kindly
I like it. Very Nice!
Thanks Richard 😀
Nice work thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching 😃
looks quite nice
Thanks :)
I love the bowl, but I couldn't help but notice that the pattern had a mistake in it! Great stuff nonetheless, Mike!
Haha I know, thinking of too many things lol 😀
Nice work, even with the missing stripe😬👍
Haha, thanks Chris
Amazing!
Thanks Shirley 😀
Love it, I wouldn't have noticed the two if you hadn't said. It is beautiful
Haha I kicked myself when I noticed 🤣
Caught the miscount early on, but it didn't bother me nearly as much as what appeared to be a shortened and filled stripe.
Still a beautiful bowl, regardless of not being perfect. In fact even more so because it IS different.
Hi Jaxx, the one that looks shorter is just the colour of the ebony sapwood but I know what you mean. :)
Very nice Mike! Color mix works well and makes the bowl stand out.
Take care, Dave
Thanks, you too, Mike
Great project!
Wrong order
Yep, it's driving my wife's OCD crazy 😂
I noticed the mistake while you was gluing. It’s so subtle tho I think it still looks amazing.
Thanks Jacob, I do like the way this one came out.
lol oooppp on the mistaken gap count still looks great well done
Thanks Colin :D
Looks very good together. It’s actually very pretty. Good work, even if you did try to glue your figures together.😁 I know so far when you were gluing it up. I there’s one place where you only left 2 in between instead of three at one edge - you did 3 then 1 ebony then 2 then 1 ebony
Yep and this bowl still drives my wife's OCD crazy😃. I quite often glue my finders together, it's sort of a special gift I have 😃
Oh Mike! It is a lovely bowl and it will be interesting to see if the mistake is spotted when people see it for the first time as a bowl. I have to say I spotted it when you were laying out, but then I wasn't trying to talk for the video at the same time! I shouted out to you, but it was too late by then!😄 It is often said "no mistakes, just a new design opportunity". The glue up looks immaculate. I Refereed a football match yesterday morning and one team 'told' me that I missed "the most blatant handball on the goal line ever", the other team told me that the ball hit the player on his body - we all 'see' things (or not) differently!!
Hi David, thanks for the wise words. if you were t see the finished bowl I doubt you would see the mistake for a while as it is quite a striking pattern. I have refereed and umpired quite a few games in different sports and you are quite right, we all see things differently. Thanks as ever, Mike
I saw a thing in the sequencing, but I didn't see it as a mistake. I figured you had to do it because of the number of pieces of each wood you had. If I were to suggest anything different, I might have had the strip of two lighter woods at the outside end, but I think your "mistake" was an elegant solution, tbh.
haha thanks so much 😀
Awesome video. You can't tell the pattern is not consistent at a glance. You have to really look for it. This is a very fine piece of art, great work. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Robert, so nice of you to say. I really appreciate your support.
Just that one section where there are only two strips rather than three.
Not a mistake, just "character".
Nice work .
Thanks, my wife has OCD so can hardly look at it lol
Well turned, great content Mike. Creative patern choice I'd call it.
Haha, thanks Scott 😀
😍 amazing bowl, in the top 3 of my favourites.
I'm with Mrs H on this, although it doesn't bother me so much as it makes me look for it all the time hahaha
But another beautiful and unique piece, Mike.
Thanks as always for sharing your talent with us.
Thanks Fiona, I'm working on another glue up now ready for next Tuesday 😄
@@MikeHolton oooh can't wait
@@fionacrouch1732 😃
That is lovely. Your ‘mistake’: One of your ebony pieces was after two oak and sepele instead of three but I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t told me to look. That is a lovely bowl/platter. And it’s not just the ebony that made it difficult. I showed Dan at Yandles a similar oak and sepele platter I turned and his first comment was: “I bet that chattered.” Keep up the good work 🌞
haha, thanks and yes, mine chattered as well. The ebony is a tough one to cut. All the best, Mike
there is an ebony in the wrong place. You did it on purpose and if you had not mentioned it we would never have noticed so thanks for that little puzzle. the final owner might have eventually spotted it I suppose. with guitar fret boards inside I reckon it could have done with some of your metal inlay magic or at least some mother of pearl dots here and there...maybe add some strings and tuners across its face and turn it into some bowl harp?
Actually though it is beautiful and perfect as it is. Mike thanks for brightening my day.
You are quite welcome my friend. I wish I had done it on purpose, then I would at least have an excuse lol. It was just one of those things, too much stuff going on in my head, there is a lot to think about when you are filming. I do like the harp idea 😀
Excellent job. Very nice piece. It look like there might be a layer of Sapele missing next to the ebony near the edge, but it really looks nice. I would have never notice unless you mentioned it.
Thanks Mark and yes you are right. This bowl is now in my living room, I like to keep it there as it drives my wife's OCD crazy 😆. All the best, Mike
Mike, when turning pieces of wood glued together that are of different hardness, do you find it difficult to work your tools on it without chattering at times? lol…I typed this question before you moved to the inside cut of the bowl. The slight pattern change really didn’t affect the overall beauty of the bowl! Fantastic job as always.
Haha yes the chatter was an issue, if I had not used ebony it would have not been so bad but that wood is HARD!!! Mike 😀
Ebony every 3 except 1 of the repeats. Looks nice though.
Spot on and thanks 😀
I have a couple of questions
How do you turn it so evenly when the hardness of the woods is so different? I know you struggled with some parts but nowhere near as much as I was expecting!
Secondly, how often do you replace your blades? You sharpen them regularly but they must get shorter over time.
I love love love this design. Gives me really classic retro vibes
Thanks! Keep your tools very sharp and turn at a high speed and the problems are cut down. Sanding can sometimes be more of an issue as they sand at different rates so you don't do too much with heavier grits.
A bowl gauge will last about 2 years for me. I sharpen with a CBN wheel which is far less abrasive than the stone types . All the best, Mike
Really nice work ( one of the ebony strips does not appear to go from edge to edge ) this mishap does not detract from the overall look
Hi Douglas, thanks and you re close, the ebony has some sapwood in it so it all goes from edge to edge but just looks a different colour. Check the spacing of the ebony boards :)
@@MikeHolton Congratulations on 1 Year .That goes to show how much it notices, where did you get the wood as it looks like just what I am after
@@SilverBack. send me an email mike@mikeholton.net and I'll let you know. Are you after the ebony or the other pieces?
With all the things you did right on this bowl, why focus on a little pattern break? Beautiful bowl!
I know, you are right but it helps to have a question in a CZcams title, it encourages people to watch. It's not ideal but it's the way CZcams works. Thanks for your support, I really appreciate it.
Looks great, well worth the effort I would say 👍🏼
(Sapele strip missing)
Thanks Mark, I appreciate your support
Mike, Is your Record Power lathe capable of reverse? If so, do your final buff in reverse, it will create a slightly higher sheen.😊
Yes it is, I'll try it one day 😀
great job as usual and glad to see you have a new lathe. as of mistake, is it the spot where yo have all the ebonu 3 apart except the one where to is two apart? But, not withstanding, a great looking bowl and has nearly made me want to brave the cold and get back out to my lathe....
Yes, correct and wrap up warm if you do, it's been getting a bit better over here but still mighty cold in the workshop, can't wait for summer.
Missed a strip of sepele, looks no worse for it 👍
Thanks so much for that although it does drive my wife's OCD crazy 😀
Beautiful! The one mistake: There’s a mark on one of the ebony lines, like a scraping mark or a lack of polish. (Low resolution on my computer.)
Ah that is where you are wrong 😀, watch carefully as I blue the pieces together 😀
@@MikeHolton I see it now- the broken pattern! Cleverly hidden by the overall beauty and movement! Don’t say it’s a mistake - just say it was a decision to see if we were paying attention! 😂
@@susannah4Him Haha thanks, it drives my wife's OCD crazy 😀
@@MikeHolton 😄 I am OCD, too!
I noticed the "mistake" when you were sorting the wood at the start, but funnily enough it's not so obvious in the finished bowl. I wonder why ebony evolved to be so dark.
That is a good question and I would like to know as well 😃
3 and half minutes in and I"m shouting at the video NOoooo check it Mike before you carry on haha Then it annoyed me all the way through that's the only thing I kept seeing 🤣Dave
Yeah, when I watched back the first bit of footage I nearly cried lol
Beautiful Bowl. I had to really look to find what you are calling a mistake. Not too sure I would call that a mistake. The way the bowl is now leaves the edges of the bowl looking balanced too me. If you had switched those two pieces, it might have left a different impression to me. Just my take on that ebony piece not being in the right spot.
If you were to see it in the flesh you would never see the misplaced ebony, there is so much going on it sort of stuns you. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment :)

But still a great looking bowl
At what stage did you notice?
Could give it away on the one year anniversary 🙈
I noticed after gluing up and I want through the first lot of footage :D
Still looks great, Mike! Even if you spaced one board of ebony with only 2 other boards! My question...how many of us stay off to the side of the work when turning the machine on? Just in case the piece comes flying off the lathe?
Not as many as should, I always stand well to the side even when I know I'm safe, it's a habit.
Practice your four times table 🤣🤣🤣 . Nice new lathe.. did you know that you can take that little hex bolt out of the pulley cover, such a pain when you want a gear change. There is a magnetic catch on it that record don’t tell you about. 😉
Thanks for the tip, that will be coming out as you clearly state it is a pain :)
Spotted your mistake during glue up. Woopsy
Haha, yep, I kicked myself for that one when I noticed.
G’day Mike, I don’t think the mistake matters a whole lot. 2 pieces or 3 had to be somewhere..
Nice job but was this the best use for ebony?
Thanks for sharing.
The ebony I got cheap and have access to 100's more if I need them. Plus I wanted a wood in there to help it stand out and I think ebony did the job well.
You had one set with only two strips, the rest all had three. This is not a deterrent from the look, I am just answering your question. I have a very logical mind and always seek symmetry.
Me too usually but sometimes I makes mistakes when thinking too far ahead, it can happen when you are making a video.
In one place there is only two boards between the ebony everywhere else there is three boards.
Yep, that is how I messed up lol 😃
Hai there, I spotted the mistake from the get go. I shouted and shouted, but you did'nt hear me ;)
The second row you laid out is three bits instaed of four............
But in the end it looked pretty damn fine. A hapy accident I would say.
Haha thanks Marcella , next time you will need to shout a little louder 😂
I noticed the ebony was a bit short on one piece.
Ah no, that was the colour of the ebony sapwood. The mistake was the pattern, I missed a piece :)
Suck a striking piece. Turned out nice. Is the mistake that the one strip of ebony didn't quite go to the edge at both ends?
Good try but that is not it, the ebony did go to the ends what you can see is the sapwood
Bel lavoro!! Tornio nuovo?🎉
Obrigado, sim, estou dando outro rbowl no dia 16 de março. Inscreva-se e comente para ter uma chance de ganhar.
One of the light strips was missing
Yep, apparently I can't count and talk at the same time 😆
When you went to set out you said i will do ebony every three then prompty left only 2 in the first section
Yep, I'm loosing it lol 😀
Yes, your "mistake" is that you only had two pieces between the ebony in one place. No worries!
Thanks, these things happen 😃
late but one pattern is only 2 instead of 3
Thant's ok James, and you are correct, this still drives my wife's OCD crazy 😃
You missed 1 white colored strip in your glue up!
Yep, it's currently on a table in my house driving my wife crazy 😂
@@MikeHolton Then remove it! Let her calm down.😁
and where is the fun in that? 😂
The mistake in the pattern was bothering me a little, but I started to wonder if you did it on purpose to drive engagement 😂
Haha no it was just me thinking about too many things and not paying attention lol 😀
Nice work but you have convinced me that I don’t want to turn ebiny
Haha I don't blame you, it is stupid hard!!!
I see the mistake. You put three other pieces of wood between the ebony ones, except in one place you had only two pieces..
Yep, apparently I can't talk and think at the same time :D
I read somewhere that if your creations are "perfect" it offends the gods 😆
Haha thanks lucky for me I have never been close to offending them lol 😂
