Laos is the most heavily bombed country in the world. In the Vietnam War the US dropped 2 million tonnes of explosives there. Now, a brave band of women are finding and destroying the 'bombies' left behind.
The women walk slowly through the undergrowth, scanning the ground with metal detectors. Given there are up to 80 million unexploded munitions in Laos the women are doing a job that will take more than a lifetime to complete. "I was excited as well as frightened", says 46-year-old Phou Vong, recalling the first time she found a 'bombie'. "I hesitated a bit, but thought I should be glad to see it, because in a sense I was helping my people." Phou joined the team 3 years ago, after her husband was killed in a road accident. "There was no-one to help me but myself, and I had no money to support my children's education." She now earns $250 a month, that's better than the average wage in Laos. It's a special empowerment programme to give much-needed opportunities to local women. But the de-miners are worried their funding will run out. "We won't be able to clear them all, there are just so many of them." More than four decades after the American campaign ended, undetonated explosives still contaminate forests and fields. And it's Lao civilians who are risking their lives to clean them up.

I feel so guilty. I was a munitions specialist in the Air Force assigned to Utapao RTNAB. For a year I built and loaded bombs for the B52's that rained this destruction on Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Perhaps it is Karma that I too have ended up crippled and disfigured by the agent orange that was sprayed by my country to clear the munitions area. My government should help the victims of those countries as they have helped me. Forgive me.

You were done dirty by Progressives who sought "Partnerships between government and industry". They have continued their mischief up to this day. Just ask the Ukrainians, who the US government gives just enough to piss off Russia without letting them win.

The US promised the DRV $3,000,000,000 for repairs and reparations. We should have honored our commitments.
I think we should have sent McNamara and Lyndon Johnson there too. For trial.

(In Fact, since 1785, we have been involved, for 231 years, in some kind of war. And this wars, against all varieties of nations. From going against the Sultan of Morocco, to invading the tiny island of Grenada. Well, this means that in our entire history, we have only had 17 years of peace, and even fewer, cuz here the almost 5 years of our Civil War (Union/Confed 1861‒1865), are Not counted, since this war was not with another country, but against us. And the wars against the Native Nations of America either are not counted, for the same reason). Anyway: We fought against 29 countries. On the other hand, China and Korea (The "Axis of Evil"), in 1,000 years of history have NEVER invaded anyone. Because our "free" press help the government cover it up. Look at the news in US newspapers and television. Some people call the press "liberal" because they criticize the government over little things, but they are all part of the same machine. It's all about money.

For others, each day is a rejoice, but for them its still a War( death, handicap). US should sanction more Funds, for what they have done in past! I hope the Children and the people out there be safe from such explosive! 😥🙏

And then see how many Americans support US Foreign Policy .
Vietnam is *STILL* the largest *producer* AND *importer* of Prosthetic limbs
9 million tonnes were dropped on Vietnam .
3 million (and still counting) on Cambodia
3 X Presidents in a row , Lied to Congress about the bombing of Cambodia
30% of Laosan land is so badly compacted by detonation , that they coundnt even fill in bomb craters . The soil had been "concretised" .

This is a propaganda hit peace. The war wouldn't have happened if the communist north didn't try to expand. North Vietnamese should clean it up, not the US.
Useful idiots vilify anyone stopping the spread of communism. Funny, I don't see anyone moving to North Vietnam...... if the US didn't intervene these people who are living a free life would be slaves to a communist regime.

I don't condone what happened however during a war things like this will happen. Laos was suppose to be with neither side but they allowed the North Vietnamese to use the country to get to South Vietnam. In order to stop the chain of supplies to getting to South Vietnam the US had to bomb the trails. I am sure the US could do a better job of helping to clean up but then you get into the politics of this. Sad all the way around.
