Perhaps the central turning point of the Christian church in 2,000 years was the Protestant Reformation.
So much was wrong and deplorable about the Church in the middle and early part of the 16th century. By the time you come in to 1510, 1515 so many of these issues had really reached fever pitch. Errant theology, clerical abuse, taking advantage of God's people through the selling of indulgences and so forth, and this deplorable understanding that the people were dirty. The laity were dirty and the clergy were clean and had access to God. And people had to go through them, and in particular through the giving of money to them, to have access to Christ and to the Father.
So what happened? Well things reached fever pitch in the early 16th century and the Protestant Reformation occurred. Martin Luther famously nailed his "95 Theses" to the door of the Wittenberg Chapel Church and so much began to happen. And year by year Europe and then beyond Europe was radically transformed.
At the heart of all that were certain core teachings that our authority was not in church councils, not in church teachings, certainly not in a pope, but in the Word of God itself. Sola Scriptura.
From that sole authority, that single authority, the reformers then built out other essential doctrines to explain for God's people and to recover for God's people what the message of the gospel is. If it's not justification equals faith plus works, then what is it? Well, in short form, the reformers argue that actually faith equals justification plus works. Faith in Christ, that is, equals justification plus works.
So then, doctrines begin to take shape and the church began to clarify and distill these in ways that are still with us today. What does it mean for one to embrace the Five Solas? We're saved by grace through faith in Christ by the Word of God alone for the glory of God alone. The key word throughout is the word "alone".
What does it mean to be saved by faith alone? Faith alone, not in of ourselves, not in works, not in good deeds, et cetera.
Grace alone. The pure mercy and goodness of God through Christ. We can't earn it. It is indeed a gift.
In Christ alone. Salvation in no other name. We had one redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ.
And all of this is rolled up in a way and presented in the Scriptures so that God alone gets the glory. If we earn our salvation, there's glory sharing. If salvation's a gift, there is no glory sharing. And so we say, glory to God alone.

What a fantastically well presented answer! Less than 3 mins to understanding.

Luther was an evil man who has led hundreds of millions away from the truth.
      Matthew 5:16
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
      Matthew 7:21
“Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."
      Matthew 16:27
"For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done."
      Revelation 2: 23
" . . and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches shall know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve."
      Revelation 22: 12
“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for what he has done."
      Romans 2: 6
"For he will render to every man according to his work."
      2 Corinthians 5: 10
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body."

There is only one place in the scriptures that we find the words 'faith' and 'alone' together and that is in James 2:24. Paul never taught salvation by faith alone and neither did Jesus. But I think that Augustine stated it quite eloquently when he wrote:
“Let us now consider the question of faith. In the first place, we feel that we should advise the faithful that they would endanger the salvation of their souls if they acted on the false assurance that faith alone is sufficient for salvation or that they need not perform good works in order to be saved".
    - St. Augustine, "On Faith and Works", 14:21. 413 AD.
“…if one can obtain eternal life without keeping the commandments, by faith alone, which without works is dead. And then, too, how will the Lord be able to say to those whom He will place on His left hand: Go into the everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels? For it is evident that He rebukes them, not because they did not believe in Him, but because they did not perform good works”.
    - St. Augustine, "On Faith and Works", 15:25, 413 AD.

There can only be one “sola,” not a collection of them.

Every Protestant that proclaims that we are justified by Faith Alone should HEAR these FOUR words by James 2:24 RINGING in their EARS:
    "not by faith alone."

But it is not faith alone that saves us. When we say that justification is by faith alone, we are saying that justification is by and through our faith in Christ alone.

Romans 4:5 says “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”
So the question is what is the difference between Romans 4 and James 2? Romans 4 is justification before God. James 2 is justification before man. Read James 2:1 and you will see that it’s directed to saved Christians and is about christians getting to work and not getting saved.
