    The biggest mistake they've made was making the kid a jerk and the burglars the heroes of the movie. You can remake home alone. It's no fun watching good people getting tortue with traps. You know, the physical comedy in the original 2 worked really well because Harry and Marv were deliciously unlikable people. You love them cause they're hilariously stupid, but they're just evil and unsympathetic enough that it's cathartic and fun watching them get injured in cartoonish, over-the-top ways. In this new one, it's really hard to find joy in the cartoonish violence and traps because these people are sympathetic, they have a family and are trying to keep their lives together. Watching them get hurt is kinda sad honestly cause they are just an everyday family struggling to make ends meet, as opposed to two middle aged men with no real backstory who wanna steal things just to steal things (oh and then try to murder a child)

    The whole problem and the reason for the low ratings is the kid is an antagonistic brat who is rude to everyone, Kevin was constantly bullied and had to stand up for himself but the kid in this is the bully. Plus watching Harry and Marv get trashed is satisfying, they’re bad people who have it coming. Meanwhile the people getting tortured in this don’t want to hurt anyone or are doing anything wrong. They just want their doll back to save their house for their family at Christmas. The films sympathetic characters are getting brutalized by a lil sociopath. It’s like a disturbing horror movie than a heart warming Christmas movie. Inherently flawed since the first frame.
    Then you add on top Disney’s gross display of greedy, this film will never be higher ranked, be viewed as a classic or have a sentimental attachment with anyone.
    It’s third crime, was the star of the movie was objectively more likable and loveable playing a Nazi Youth in JoJo Rabbit, figure that one out.

      @pyraffin Před 2 lety +57

      Yeah. Plus, the movie makes the punching bag characters sympathetic by showing their desperate condition (and that they didn't care about the kid) so any harm that comes to them feels horrible to the audience.
      The original burgarers funny to be beat up was that they were bad guys and intended harm to Kevin, it felt like they deserved it all. If we got sad backstories about the burglar's life as like poor orphans or something or their sad living conditions without food or decorations or family, we'd feel very different about them being hurt. But we don't, they're just the bad guys and it's fun when they get what they deserve.

      Yeah the scary stranger who becomes a friend bit in Home Alone works because we see them from Kevin’s perspective as the scary stranger pretty much up until he makes the realization himself. I think it would’ve played a lot better if the same logic applied here. If we are made to believe Max is going to be kidnapped or whatever until he realizes it’s not the case and the real misunderstanding comes out. It would also allow you to laugh at the physical comedy as in the moment you don’t sympathize with the family.

    I totally agree with you on the “just because it’s for kids doesn’t mean it has to be stupid” front. It’s probably just my age, but when I was a child we had movies like Watership Down, the original Land Before Time, Once Upon A Forest, all things that (in my opinion, at least) are kid’s movies that can also be watched by adults.
    Obviously there’s also Disney stuff, which have always been family films; the first film I ever saw in a cinema was the original Lion King. But I swear there also used to be plenty of other family films to choose from. Now there does seem to be a big distinction between ‘family film’ and ‘dumbass nonsense only kids could put up with, maybe not even them’ and it’s sad. Probably because of Don Bluth studios going under.

    Interesting choice to have the couple we're supposed to sympathize with break into this family's home while they're away instead of doing the responsible thing by getting the contact information of the mother, explaining the situation and receiving permission to enter their house to find the doll.

It's like if I went up to a random person and said "Hey, I'm gonna punch you in the face now" *Punches said person who complains about it* "Uh-uh! You can't complain because I told you I was going to do it so I'm now above your criticism towards me." It's like the makers of these movies are operating under that same mentality.

    Can we also talk about the fact that they opted to make every effect CGI? There weren't that many effects, so it wasn't too obvious, but every single trap from the falling icicles to the sugar package slingshot were entirely CGI and it mainly bothered me, because most would haven been entirely possible to do practical.
    I'm pretty sure shoting a sugar package prop at someone would have even been cheaper than doing it in CGI.
