What he's speaking is more formal modern british English that's attempting to sound like early modern English. If they want him to be understood, the movie should make him able to write and have him write notes to her, or make it clear that magic changed his language, or absolutely anything to explain why he speaks the way he does.

Little historical storytelling fun fact about the whole "he has to find a girlfriend to become a better knight"-situation: In medieval stories (like 11th/12th century) it was a commonly used theme to have good fighters find a girl and settle down. Then over time they'd lose their knight qualities by chilling too much and fighting too little. To redeem themselves they'd have to ask their wife whether they're allowed to go on another adventure, more epic than the ones they had prior to their marriage. In the end of the story, after their great quest, the protagonist knight usually comes out a better knight than before, and all of that just because they found a girlfriend! So actually, what Amanda said as a joke in this video does make sense in a way :D
(Disclaimer: My knowledge comes specifically from German medieval fiction, because that was my major in uni. A lot of stories back then were straight up copied and then filigreed from French and English literature, so all of that should more or less be the same. I get though that what I explained above might vary depending on different works of fiction, different time periods and different cultural environments.)

His quest is to help her realize that true love is possible, it just so happens that the true love was him. I actually had a bigger problem with the fact he seemed quite clean and fresh, and the fact that he did not display more undesirable qualities due to him being from a society far in the past and a different country. The scene he calls the waitress a wench (which isn’t really an insult, just disrespectful in a modern context) was hilarious because that is exactly how he should have acted.

  • @briarnotblair
    @briarnotblair Před 3 lety +5

See, I found this plot semi understandable, because a huge part of the culture surrounding knights at the time was based on the idea of chivalry and courtly love as defined in the court of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Think of the King Arthur tales. While those are largely believed to be fiction, they are still a suprisingly accurate representation of the aspects of knight culture. Both fighting and battling *and* love, romance, and chivalry were important parts of the lifestyle.
Therefore, it would stand to reason that learning to open one's heart and fall in love would make sense as a quest for a knight.
I mean, the movie is objectively bad, but it's quite fun, and this part is suprisingly sensible.

Presumably the witch could have sent the knight anywhere, to any time period in the history of human civilization... so why specifically send him to fall in love with a teacher in 21st century Ohio?? Was there literally not a single person, in the entire English kingdom, that he could have fallen in love with in his own time period?

Look, I get that I'm a few months late, but I have a legitimate grievance with this. 🧐 We are to believe that "the guy who clearly can't afford things for his kid," is a restuarant owner but he can't afford a $100 bicycle for his daughter on Christmas? Wha- 🤨
And I'm not saying that $100 isn't a life sustaining amount of money at times- because it absolutely can be. But. . . The owner of an independent diner in a major metropolitan hub . . . Shouldn't have to scrape the pennies together for an eight year old's bike.
Edit: Jeeze! Or gloves for WINTER?!?!

The crawling on the ice bit makes sense. Ice cracks because the weight of your body is dispersed through a smaller surface area if you are standing. Outting more pressure on the ice you're standing on. Crawling distributes the weight over a larger surface area decreasing the change that the ice willbreak under you.

I would have done it this way:
The knight was next in line for some knightly honor/throne and his younger brother whose his rival, paid off a witch to send him(knight) away somewhere to the future in pretense of a quest, so that he(brother) could easily take the honor/throne. Knight goes to future and sees that no one remembers Christmas anymore - which is due to his brother getting the throne thus setting off a chain of events that have altered the future- knight assumes his quest is to make everyone remember/believe/celebrate in Christmas again with Vanessa's help. They do everything they can, but nothing seems to work. He figures out his brother betrayed him and this breaks the guise of the quest, forcing the witch to find the knight in the future, she gives him a choice; either stay with his love Vanessa or go back in time and claim his throne thus reversing the effect of no one celebrating Christmas. This is the choice that will determine whether he is a good knight or not, if he can pick the world/society over his own wants and desires. Also this choice will show vanessa that love truly exists, but sometimes not in a traditional fashion, she has to love the knight enough to want him to go back to his time period and make things right, common theme of; i loved him so much I let him go. He decides he has to go back and the two say their goodbyes. It is the night before christmas and the knight is back in his time period now. He reclaims his throne which results in Christmas being celebrated again. His brother is held in court for treason, then jailed.. in his jail cell he vows revenge and learns from the witch that his brother loves vanessa, this sets the gears in his mind to motion for what he's to do next.
However both brothers are oblivious that the witch is executing an elaborate plan that will send both brothers to war against one another,, which will leave the throne open for whomever is strongest to take it, meaning the witch will take it.
Will she be successful? Only time will tell.

Funny story. The "magic bean" in the bread comes from ancient rites where whoever got the bean was "king" for a short period of time, a week or two. They were exempt from any laws and could sleep with any woman even wives and virgins. Even the king or local nobles wives and daughters. And an emphasis on doing mischief. Then they were sacrificed so the crops would grow.

I couldn't help but notice the similarities between this and the first Thor movie.
After all, both feature a romance between a normal girl and an otherworldly being who is out of touch with present times. Then there's the plot convenience of them bonding out of the female lead's pity (because they hit the male lead with a car). Not to mention the gag where the male leads have a sweet tooth, which they give into excessively.
Now, I just want to make it clear, this is by no means a negative comment on the movie. I merely wanted to point out my observations. And I ultimately think this sort of trope is charming, and would be fun to see portrayed (but certainly not portrayed so much that it becomes one of the most hated tropes in existence).
