    Dear Marin, thanks for this great video. For me was the Mopane joint the winner, but it is a question of taste. About oboes made with this wood...yes, Josef works already many years with this wood and I am a happy owner of a Mopanes Cor Anglais. The wood is really stable as you say and has a wonderfull resonance. Best regards. Jaime

    I would say I preferred the mopane joint, sounded like it had a fuller, slightly richer warmer sound. I’ve seen it online and always considered it more of a visual thing. But the difference is quite noticeable.

    Option 1 has noticeably more "ring" in the sound, especially on the 2nd octave Es. I feel like it would sing through the orchestra much easier than the Grenadilla

    I use to have a M2 and I had both head joints: kingwood and grenadilla. What I felt (and I heard in your playing too) it’s like the grenadilla had more reverb in the sound. It has just better projection and “matches” better the rest of the instrument 😇

      Usually M2 are ‘late development’ oboes and that will happen to your head joints too. I certainly believe both head joints will develop and will become easier to play, the grenadilla will keep the proyection and the mopane will grow in beauty and flexibility😇

    I actually own a mopane oboe myself! I can’t speak to the subtle differences between it and grenadilla, because I had been playing on a plastic beginners oboe before I switched, but i really enjoy the sound of it! It sounds very slightly more tinny, but not overly so. Grenadilla tends to sound more flowery and rich in tone, while mopane sounds a little like a tenor singing high register at times. If that makes much sense haha.

    BIg difference, my 2 cents are going to the option 1. Reading the comments below, I must say that option 2 *might* be really good fit for an ensemble or orchestra but it really depends on so many factors, At the end of the day the oboe is the shiniest and the most beautiful instrument, don't hide in your shell, show the world how much it can :)

  • @junnansun9653

    Hey Martin, how does it sound in a big concert hall? I think the black wood will project more? The mopane sounds more clear up-close. I’m not sure how it will sound in a big hall when you have to project through a big orchestra. The black wood sounds like it will take more air with ease. On clarinet we have mopane and boxwood to choose from but after testing in my concert hall everytime the blackwood wins. Maybe Mopane will be better for solo recitals and chamber music where finer details are required. You sound great, really enjoyed the Brahms solo, so warm and beautiful ❤

    • @BeyondOboe
      @BeyondOboe  Před rokem +1

      Very good comments. I did play it a few times in a big hall and I do feel more comfortable on the grenadilla, it blends and caries nicer. I used the mopane for some Haydn and it helped me with the clarity in the sound, the articulation is clearer somehow. These are my impressions and I would be curious to hear a feedback from the audience. At the end I don't think the difference is that big but it's nice to have the variety.

      @@BeyondOboe it's an interesting concept. I'm not sure how I feel about the elongated main joint as a result of the interchangeable head, as it would be very costly to replace.

  • @pembala
    @pembala Před rokem +2

    on your oboe I'd prefer the Grenadilla, as the pitches are less piercing, it sounds warmer - but you may try a Mopane *bell* as well, I use one on the Mönnig oboe. Changing the bell has different effects, which I personally prefer, a bit brighter than Grenadilla, but with more even tone quality, that I like especially for baroque music. you may generate more pathos with grenadilla, but it can be annoying after a while
    The Mopane bell I varnished with shellac to produce a sharper attack (shellac makes the surface harder, which changes the start of the tone). This gave the best result. Unvarnished it had a baroque-oboe like nasal start on low notes.
    I've tried bells made of Wenke and Paoa Rosa as well. Wenke was very nice as well, but too close to grenadilla, Paoa Rosa was muted, you can play very gently, but the tone has less overtones

    • @somebody9033
      @somebody9033 Před rokem

      Agree completely, think the grenadilla has more of the lower overtones leading to a richer sound.

      Thank you for all this information, I asked marigaux if they made mopane bells but unfortunately not because the bell could influence a lot as well. I might have to try 3rd party makers. I would imagine exactly what you say that a mopane bell would give a sharper and clearer attacks.

    Hi! This video is great!I'm a clarinet player. In 2023 we have 3 choices : mopane,grenadilla and boxwood. Actually boxwood is not the best choice in orchestra or wind,because of it's light and not deep? but when i use that to play Mozart, that's the sound of Mozart i think. I've not play mopane clarinet yet, maybe it's similar to the boxwood? I'm so sorry about My English is not good enough, hope u can know what I'm talking about.😊

    • @BeyondOboe
      @BeyondOboe  Před 11 měsíci

      The box wood would be very suitable for Mozart indeed, historical clarinets are made from boxwood. As for mopane it's a very dense wood, even harder then grenadilla. It has a very focused sound which I like. Recently I played in Finland with a colleague who uses mopane clarinets and he sounds great on them.

  • @SwissOnZ
    @SwissOnZ Před rokem

    Grenadilla hands down is better. It’s surprising how feel can cloud the judgment but you knew that. Tighter and more focused. Also the introduction of other sources of woods have amplified the hardness of grenadilla and its preferred resonance. Sourcing and sustainability.

    +1 Grenadille

  • @krane15
    @krane15 Před rokem

    There was definitely a distinctive difference in the sound from each. I feel the mopane was warmest and the grenadilla was more resonant. If you're playing in a venue with a lot of reverb, you may want prefer the warmer less resonant sound of the Mopane. It may also depend on the choice of music.
    BTW, I couldn't help but notice your use of titles. May I suggest you use them with all words you're defining. I assume English is not your first language, and the pronunciation of Mopane and Grenadilla don't translate very well.
    I couldn't distinguish it even pronounced by native English speakers until I looked it up. A lot of times content providers tend to take that for granted because it sounds fine in their head.
