  • I recently tried a couple of Marigaux oboes. Which do you think sounds better? You can see me go more in depth about the M2 oboe in this video: • Marigaux M2 Oboe Play ...
Let me know if you can tell the difference in the sound and what oboes you like to play on.

I would be interested in a segment comparing a Marigaux 901 with a Loree. I have owned both and I much prefer the 901.

I preferred the M2. I play a Loree Royal and prefer the richer, dark sound of the thicker walled instrument. It also resonated better in the recording. However, the 2001 had a sweet lyrical sound and if it felt better to you that’s all that matters. I love Marigaux. I play a Marigaux English horn.

M2 has a more complex sound, I feel. Both are beautiful and you play both of them beautifully. Maybe 2001 would be more flexible, because lighter? Like a sports car which is lighter and corners more easily. A heavier car gives a smoother ride but not as nimble? I play a Loree C series. Thanks for this video. Always was curious about Marigaux, my teacher, in another country, plays one. They are very, very big in Europe. Cheers!

Great thoughts thanks for sharing! I also am fond of Loree :) what do you like about the c series you play? I have heard that they are very free

There is no right answer. When you play them separately they are both nice to listen to. But side by side, the M2 is richer, darker, more to my liking. Playing the same piece on each is very helpful. I’m not surprised the M2 feels denser. It SOUNDS denser. And that’s a good thing. Next to the M2, the 2001 sounded thinner, or that’s what was picked up in the recording anyway.

Also remember that the majority of what is physically attributed to the timbre one experiences is actually the space that is played in. Recordings, and especially CZcams, compresses or just fail to capture a good portion of the nuance in sound that we would be listening for in comparing instruments of the same type. For me at least, reliability and intonation (that is, the instrument having pitch tendencies which are close to center and otherwise very easy to adjust for) are primary in considering an instrument. Beyond that, if there are multiple options in my price range, it's entirely subjective.

Marigaux oboes are THE OBOE to play in Europe. Americans are usually fixated on their Loree brand, which to my ears simply sounds DULL!! The Marigaux oboes have a warm, complex, round, sonorous sound that is immensely more appealing.

Well I'm an American and love my Marigaux 901 :). I don't think I'll ever play Loree oboes again!

It's so refreshing to hear that Americans are catching on to the beauty of the Marigaux instruments. Do you also play a short-scrape reed or do you use the standard American long scrape?@@mrbroadwaydork

Grotrian Sieler I agree with your opinion, within constraints of the audio process. Could the brighter instrument suit say Telemann, where the M2 blends better in an orchestra. Both sound wonderful and I am sure their workmanship is finest quality. Loree Etoile owner here.

I can hear overscraped reed tip mostly.
Nice video but I would pick better reed to test and one that plays in tune.
Marigaux delivers unique colors when played with healthy reed tips on the heavier side.
I watched your M2 review and I can imagine that S for small and M for medium its so hard to figure out.
    (:
All and all nice videos thanks

Hmm thanks! I’ll try a healthier reed next time for sure! lol it didn’t occur to me that they would be for English words😂 I just assumed they would be French hahaha.

Would it be possible for you to compare a Fox 880 Sayen Grenadilla vs. its Maple counterpart? I want to purchase a Sayen, but I'm not sure which material makes the better instrument. Thanks!
