ABARTH 695 RIVALE - You won't believe how good this car sounds !

  • A few years ago I nearly bought an Abarth 500. It's taken me until now to actually get to drive one but thanks to Abarth UK I've had this 695 Rivale for the last week and it's made quite an impression.
    Great looks, 180PS, and a simply amazing Akrapovic exhaust. It's an all round great package, but what is it really like to drive and own.
    Check our more Abarth videos at StefAB TV...

    Sure there's a lot to be said both positive and negative about the Abarth. The one thing and in my opinion the most important thing you cannot deny is they bring a huge smile to your face every time you drive them. Doesn't matter if your're driving to work, the grocery store, or out on an autocross track. When you turn that key and hear that sound it's instant happiness. When you rev and it gurgles then downshift and it pops and crackles you can't help but grin. I'm so glad I bought one, absolutely love it!

      Rented a 695 Comp in Poland. Been a dream to drive one so and it still is. Don't know about the two teenagers I placed in the rear seats, but I loved it, although the suspension and Polish back roads didn't always work well together (came back missing half a kidney).

    I got an automatic 2018 Fiat Abarth 500 last year and I smile everyday after driving it for a year. That sound from the back is the Abarth fart that pops. Even though it's automatic, it still feels like a sick stick drive. Especially when you slow down, you feel how the Abarth shifts down like a real stick.
    But yeah, this is not a long distance Sunday drive. It's made for just fun fun and fun drive for someone cannot afford A Lamborghini but wants the thrill of driving a beast on the street feel.
    You cannot not smile when driving this and that popping powerful fart, that's the reason most drivers get it. Who doesn't want a car that farts? This is THE funnest car to drive on earth.

    I have one - the hard top version, which is marginally more practical. I've collected a motorcycle frame in it, there's plenty of load space with the rear seats down and obviously the hatch is a lot more accessible that the letterbox boot access of the convertible, but a Volvo estate it will never be. That said I used to have a 500C and had two motorcycle frames in that, loaded through the top! The Rivale is a belting little car. I did a 1,000 mile plus round trip to Scotland and loved every minute. It's one of those cars that puts a smile on your face as soon as you see it, and makes you laugh out loud when you start it up, push that Sport button, and pull away. It's forte is B roads where it just blasts from bend to bend in a cacophony of howling exhaust, chirping tyres, and torque steer. It's utterly hilarious, and I actually look forward to damps days when I don't want to ride my motorbike to work - and truth be known have as much fun on dry days in the Rivale as well. Reviewer didn't point out that the Sport button also firms up the steering considerably by the way, but otherwise did a good job. They're all sold out now apparently, the Rivale was always a limited edition Abarth variant with only 3500 made - 1750 Cabrios as tested here and 1750 hard tops - plus a further 350 ultra rare Anniversary 175 editions.

I pity people that can't drive a stick and have this much fun! Helpful hint if this little lowrider's front end gets hung up on a curb.......use the fiat air compressor to super inflate the front tires. You can get just enough lift to save the cars front end from pulling off as you back out.

    I’ve got a 2012 500 US Spec Abarth, which is basically a European EsseEsse in terms of power. I love the thing. One of the best cars I’ve ever owned.
    First of all your concerns about the boot. First mod I did to my car was remove the back seat. No one wanted to be back there anyway and the car is basically a 2 seater in spirit. Remove the back seat and the hatch space is huge!
    Second on the firm ride and long journeys. I drive mine routinely on 600 mile trips to visit family and it’s fine on the highway. Comfortable enough, but it’s no luxury car and I didn’t expect it to be. It gets even better on those trips if you get off the highway and take back roads, then you just don’t care about the comfort.
    As for the steering wheel being too far away. There is a company that sells a steering wheel spacer that brings the wheel back another inch+ or so.

The car is much faster than it looks, it brakes and handles much better than most people expect. Its just a blast to drive as my daily commuter. Madness500 near LA parts estimates 196bhp at crank and it feels it on maximum boost. I average 27.7mpg most weeks. I now drive a e89 z4 and every time I open my window (typically to hold my security card up to a sensor at work...so this is often) after it rained, big streams of water gush down from the seam between the roof and the windscreen and RIGHT onto the switches. I really wish they were in the center. Love the car otherwise but really wish I could change that. PS, Adore the Abarth. It is a stylish little thing, I'll give it that but not my cup of tea I'm afraid. Though if I lived in Rome or by the Med, it'd probably be a contender. For the same sort of money I got an i30N (in part due to your review), which though not as stylish by any means is great on the twisties, good on the motorway and brought us here with a boot full of luggage, a dog, a child and three bikes on the roof.
    Looking forward to you getting a couple of new cars. Will we have endless My Next Car click bait videos, followed by the great reveal and then shortly after vids of the car getting wrapped, new exhaust, carbon bonnet and finally the biggest mod of the lot the Magic Tree Air Freshener? 😎

    Very solid review, nice job. I agree, I am not sure this should be your only car especially if you live in a snowy climate. I have a Toyota Avalon for long road trips and for the winter months, but I drive my Abarth as much as possible. I recommend purchasing a Cabriolet (convertible) for the reasons you mentioned. Also, do a few upgrades for around $1000 USD and you will have an even more amazing experience (ECU, GoPedal, air intake). I do not agree that this car is as attractive as you feel (your Mini looks much sexier to me), but I am asked frequently what kind of car it is that just pulled up with such a growl.

    I've been waiting all week for this review & you didn't disappoint. I love the car, but like you, I doubt i'd be able to live with it on a long term basis. The Mini F56 has a strange offset on the pedals (on the auto) which meant long journeys became very uncomfortable. For my needs, I need something with a bit of boot space, but also with the performance to match. I'm not to keen to buy brand new again, and I'm not too fussed about whether I buy a manual or auto. I'm thinking the i30n, but I recall you had some reservations. I might look at the Fiesta ST3. Great review as usual Pete!

    • @tehdeutschbag
      @tehdeutschbag Před 5 lety

      I drive an f56 jcw manual for about 30000km and the pedals seem in a good place, good to know that the pedals are a bit offset for the auto i was eyeing an auto countryman jcw for well family practicality.
      I have driven the older Fiesta st and while it was a hoot to drive it was less refined than the mini (which is its own personality nothing wrong there) but i guess in the long run it might be not quite that well rounded as a daily. Maybe the ST3 is better but i cannot say.
      A different choice might be the S1 which is a great daily but a tad on the boring side due to the hang-on quattro, but great in every weather condition. Might be worth looking at, i mean it never hurts to test drive it and get your own feel for the car.

    • @andyross37
      @andyross37 Před 5 lety

      @@tehdeutschbag I now have a short list of possible future cars. The Fiesta ST3 is one of them, as is the S1 (I think a new model is due in 2019?), as is the Golf GTi and the i30n. I'd like something with 5 doors, not too big, but with some performance too. I haven't driven the new Countryman yet, but I had a JCW Countryman auto of the previous model on loan for 2 days. I hated the auto transmission on it, but the new one shares the latest transmission which is excellent

    • @tehdeutschbag
      @tehdeutschbag Před 5 lety

      Andy Ross thats a nice list actually. The i30n could be pretty good. I need to be honest i havent really seen one on the streets where i live but they really stepped up their game in all regards.
      But i think it all comes down to personal preference, i like a premium touch to my cars - that said i mean the whole package. It can undoubtedly be said the mini while being costly is a way different scale of materials used and technologies than say a fiesta ST (again this is purely subjective and the character of the fiesta to be „simpler“ but less costly and more focussed on being a true back to the roots hot hatch)
      The audi similary, at least the previous generation, feels not premium enough for its pricetag compared to the Mini, whose like it or not tech range is i would say top of the line in this segment. The Mini does have automated parking, cruise control with distance control, emergency braking adaptive dampers a great touch screen infotainment with harman & kardon speakers and true real time traffic updates.
      This though is where i think the i30n could do well in the sense of being not too pricey but with a good quality interior (as you need to be able to see and want to touch it everyday without getting sick or frustrated) as well as a range of tech and also performance to boot.
      All i can say is i drove the countryman jcw and sure its a great car but undeniably less performance than usability. Which in its own right is more or less what i am looking for personally in my next car. Snow can be terrible with a fwd hot hatch since building forward momentum becomes a tedious task.

    • @andyross37
      @andyross37 Před 5 lety

      @@tehdeutschbag I had a fully loaded F56 JCW, with every extra. I also have a MK7 Fiesta with the 1.0 140bhp engine. I could no longer sustain having 2 cars as the costs on the Mini were to high for the use it got, so I sold it. The Fiesta has been a superb little car and I do like the new version. I think the i30n would be far more practical......though it wouldn't fit in my garage, so it would be parked outside. The i30n also has 275bhp, which is more than all of the others, so it's currently top of my list.
