- It's rare that we get to spend an entire day fishing. I can't remember a time where we fished for more than three hours, but in this outing Vivian and I got up early, and drove a couple hours for a full day of fishing and it paid off. In total I think we landed 7 species of fish, a couple of bigger ones (for us anyway) a new PB for Viv, and a new species for me (a fairly rare one in a body of water this big).
Our target was gar and flatheads. They didn't show up, but plenty of others did. Enjoy Part 1 of this two-part series.

Congratulations to Vivian on her new personal best freshwater drum!
Viv says Thanks!
Beautiful fishing this place is wonderful Congratulations, it is very similar here in Brazil where I fish.
Hug!!!👍😊
Thanks! I'm sure Brazil has some great fishing.
She told you, good job viv...
She "tells me" a lot :)
Awesome day of fishing
Thanks! It really was. To even get a whole day of fishing in was a blessing.
Awesome!!! Can’t beat days like that!!!
I'm hoping we can have a few more of them this season!
Good job Viv! Fancy new net you got there Cory
Can you tell I'm still trying to figure out how to work it? It's supposed to be an improved version of my old net, but I got the bigger version (you know, for all the giants I'm going to catch next year 😜)
@@teamcramerfishing8441 oh yeah, doesn't hurt to be prepared for that big one.
Congrats to her on the PB so cool to get kids involved in fishing like that. Can't wait to someday do it myself!
Time fishing with your kids is the best time ever. Especially nowadays when there are so many other life distractions.
@@teamcramerfishing8441 yeah for sure, can't wait for that time!
Wow! Congrats on the grass carp! Those things are pretty hard to find without fishing sketchy residentail ponds! Also that was a nice freshwater drum for Viv! I still have yet to catch one of those. Can't wait to see part two!
Yeah, I know where one lives in a tiny pond near here, but it almost doesn't seem fair to catch one like that. I'm glad I was able to get one on a big body of water. And, if you want drum, I know where to find them! :)
This is awesome can't wait to have a daughter and do this 1 day.
It's truly the best! And it doesn't take long before they start to outfish you 😀
Great job bro😃👍Keep stack'n
Thanks, CAM. We're learning. We're learning. We found a few crappies the other day. That vid should be out next week. I'm hoping to get more crappies during ice season this year.
Yes, grass carp, known elsewhere as white amur. Its a good fish if u dont have panfish in the water. It feeds on grass and once it shows up it literally cleans up the banks of weeds entirely, hence destroying habitat for panfish. Some farmers buy the hybrid triploid grass carp which cannot reproduce. U can buy only 5 fish and they eat some of the weeds but u still have weeds for panfish habitat. If it werent so dangerous to panfish, i would t mind it, as it grows to be huge, and is easy to catch on rod and reel, unlike the other asian carp that are plankton feeders. This was a baby.
It was a hard fighter. Every now and then I'll see one that has been stocked in a small pond. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it is a fairly rare catch in the biggest lake in Iowa, which is what we were fishing here, but it's possible I'm wrong.
I dont see many carp anglers from iowa. U have to target these like carp, with feeders and corn. Check my videos from IL river. I caught a lot of 3 footers there. Great fighters and a pleasure to target. But IL river is completely weedless these days, and panfish and crappie are very hard to find. These days there is just carp soecies and catfish soecies in that river. 6 or 7 carp species and 5 or 6 catfish species. If this is a young fish, there must be reproducing adults. My guess is that lake does not have much weeds by the bank
In the parts of the lake I have been to it is pretty rocky, with sandy coves. We've only targeted carp once this year, and we got skunked, but we have fished for some with carp gear and caught them in the past. I know how to catch them in my local lake, but the really big ones are in the bigger lakes and rivers, which are a little farther from home. We aren't allowed to chum in Iowa, but I usually use a method lead with success.
Good stuff buddy! Congrats on the PB!
Thanks!
