    I reluctantly started teaching online 4 years ago. Now I absolutely love it. Instead of teaching "online" I see it as teaching "out in the world" - without walls. This is Episode 1 where I go over the basic setup and structure of my class:
    Tip #1 - Simplify the structure - 1:59
    Tip #2 - Greet them at the virtual door - 3:27
    Tip #3 - Justify your Decisions - 3:50
    Tip #4 - Built community with video introductions - 4:34
    Tip #5 - Consider having a discussion about discussions - 5:03
    Tip #6 - Weekly overviews - 5:22
    Tip #7 - Don‘t waste their time - 7:46
    Tip #8 - Read to them - 8:32
    Tip #9 - Respond freely - 8:56
    Tip #10 - Get feedback - 9:36

      I love these tips, and couldn't agree more that instructors need to share more. A bonus--someone else in humanities like me. Some of your tips I'm already doing (simplify the structure, justify your decisions); others that will push me (respond freely). Looking forward to diving more into your channel.

    Why would anyone even dislike this video? Probably those professors I had in college that literally didn't do much and was more just an extra body in the room that threw up a powerpoint slide.
    That aside, thanks for this Michael!, I am potentially starting a part-time teaching position for a course related to my professional field, and I found your video to be really insightful. You sound like an amazing teacher, something I've had only very few of in my time in school. You don't need me to tell you this I'm sure, but keep it up!, your students appreciate you for sure.

    I'm impressed, Michael. Great to see you giving advice on teaching online.
    I've been teaching fully online and in blended learning formats (online and face-to-face) since 2002 via Moodle. I thought I was addicted to online communication and learning until a few years ago. I now take every opportunity to teach face-to-face. I need to look into my students' eyes. I never thought I'd go back to regular face-to-face halls. I was hooked to Second Life, Virtual Worlds and social networking. I was so addicted that I started organizing online conferences, MOOCs, webinars and regular courses. I'd spend most of the day and night in front of the screen. I hardly slept and stopped my long distance running. I haven't stopped my online ventures, but except for online libraries, Google, my CZcams channel, and Amazon, I need two-way eye contact to feel connected.

It takes confidence to do, but once it worked, I think students will feel more freedom and connection with you as a teacher too! Sure want to try it. Like so many, I’ve been suddenly thrust into the world of online teaching (college level). And I want to do right by the students. This video was a big help. Most of my colleagues hold live Zoom lectures in what seems to be an attempt to duplicate on-campus lecturing, and a fear of losing on-time interaction with students. I believe we live in an increasingly on-demand world. Unlike us, our students don’t tune in their TVs to such-n-such a time to watch their favorite shows; why should we impose this for their lectures and other course facets when we have such a great opportunity to reinvent our product? And we can use our students’ on-demand lifestyles as a model. It’s not been an easy transition, but videos like yours have been very helpful and give me hope for what teaching will look like in the future. Thank you.

    Thank you Michael for your videos and your help so far. I am now one month into this new adventure of designing level 3 Anthropological Theory. With your tips I managed to get a teaching assistant/moderator for the group work! I am wondering aobut platforms for posting short lectures. Our university mandates Panopto. To use that programme - which streams content from an Amazon server - you have to surrender your rights to that company. You obviously feel comfortable with CZcams. Do you feel confident that you can control your content - remove it if necessary - and not worry that it will be distributed in unexpected ways? My thought was to mount lectures there - and put links into our central learning management platform.

    Thanks for this resource. Very helpful for those thousands of us who have been thrust into on-line teaching whether we like it or not. I got a lot out of this video, but I would like to point out that you seem to have professional looking lighting equipment in your office, a real camera, a professional looking microphone, and you seem to have a camera-person filming you as you walk down the street with the local pastor or jog with your family. Most of us will simply not have this kind of equipment or support for the on-line material we are making. This video and your video class are thus not a realistic standard for most of us, and I wonder if you might in future videos focus on more attainable standards? I wonder whether you could share nuts and bolts information like the kind of equipment that would be affordable and which investments would make the biggest difference in our content for the lowest price? And what editing software do you use for your video production? Thanks!

    • @mwesch
      @mwesch  Před 4 lety +1

      Check out the rest of the series and you will see that I do not use the lighting (I bought it and used it for a few videos, but now just use window light), I don't have a camera person (that's a cheap 360 camera), and I use free editing software (DaVinci Resolve).

      I like to do some minor editing, so I use DaVinci Resolve (free). Resolve does not export in mp3, so I have to export as a WAV and then convert to mp3 using Audacity.

    Michael, a question. How do you get the audio from the CZcams videos to incorporate them into the "big audio" for the students? I've found these tips GREAT and I tested them in one of my summer courses. It was AWESOME and plan to use a lot of these ideas for fall!! Thank you!

    • @mwesch
      @mwesch  Před 3 lety +1

      Great! To extract the audio from CZcams videos you can either use a downloader like 4kDownload and set it to download as an mp3, or you can download as a video and then put all of them into an editor like DaVinci Resolve. Line them up as you want them and then export the audio only. Resolve only exports in WAV format, so you will have to use Audacity to convert to mp3. All of these tools (4kDownload, Resolve, and Audacity) are free.

    I appreciate your optimism and tips. For people with flexible platforms who are designing online classes, I can see a lot of this working out for people. Having seen online ed at a big research university used by administrators to generate more funds and teach 700+ students at a time and used by students to get credit hours as fast as possible, I'm pretty skeptical about this entire enterprise. The students I've talked with universally seen online classes as a joke. Given your previous video work, I'm surprised that you'd come out as such a strong supporter of online teaching in the university. Your class itself looks pretty amazing, but I wonder if the larger context of online ed undermines your cool work as a teacher in this mode ...

    • @mwesch

      These are all concerns that I have had as well, and no doubt the system is abused by admins, profs, and students alike. But since I started teaching online I have had a few surprising eye-opening experiences. The first is the moment I met my first online students (via video) and learned all the reasons that they couldn't be in a classroom on campus. I immediately realized a very real need for high-quality online education. I am all the more determined to help create high-quality online education because of all the ways it can be abused for the expediency of selling or earning credits. I have also found that the online environment offers several possibilities that the traditional classroom cannot, and the shortcomings are not as drastic as I once thought. Teaching online has ultimately made me a better classroom teacher - with better materials, a better structure, and more empathy for the range of learners who might be in the room. I would love to hear more about your concerns. They are important, and I think it might be worth making a video noting all the ways online education is currently being mis-used and creating the impression among so many that online classes are a "joke" (I have heard that expressed quite a bit as well).

      @@mwesch I can see your points and share many of them ... my own online class (I only developed one) had affordances I couldn't tap into in the classroom. Still, I see faculty and contingent faculty being exploited through online teaching ... and students being deprived of valuable experiences through online classes that are less robust than yours. So I worry a bit about it ...

    • @sarahlwesch
      @sarahlwesch Před 4 lety +5

      I definitely get the skepticism about university administrations' financial motives for online classes. At the same time, at our big university we have a fairly large number of students who can't afford to be a traditional, on-campus student. These students have to work their education around work and parenting. While I think most professors would prefer to limit their teaching to on-campus, doing so would be elitist. Online teaching has the potential to be much more democratic and accommodating of differences (e.g. students with disabilities who may find it hard to get to class every day.)
      If we don't want students to think online classes are a joke, we need to take them more seriously ourselves. Elevate the content and the expected level of engagement.

    • @mwesch
      @mwesch  Před 4 lety +2

      @@metaspencer Yeah, it isn't hard to imagine that this is the beginning of the end of high-quality meaningful education for many - even as we are trying to extend that education to more. Somehow we have to inspire faculty, admins, and students to dig in and create meaningful learning experiences even when that path is so much harder than the expedient routes.

    • @lwidenor
      @lwidenor Před 4 lety +2

      @@metaspencer Great conversation and very valuable points. There has been too much exploitation of online learning from many directions and we are all struggling to take back this valuable learning pathway to create meaningful interactions and opportunities with students. Faculty absolutely deserve to have support in the course development process and administration - they should not be overwhelmed with large courses consider equivalent to teaching a face-to-face course with 20 student enrollments. The students deserve a robust learning environment that is more flexible for their busy lives.
