    Having read all the comments I can sort of see the point of a lot of the critique when they have not used the machine. I just bought mine a month ago after watching this video. 2 days after getting it I went away for 3 weeks so in real time I have only been using it since last Friday. I have everything in my shop. Many of the incra tools that people mention. I have a full size router table on my Sawstop which allows me to use the fence for precision cuts that can accomplish what this video demonstrates. I also have a CNC machine that I built myself. After purchasing the Shaper, I realized that it is not really a CNC. The main difference is that the cut paths of a CNC machine are 3 axis. Shaper is 2 axis and the user provides the the depth for the most part. CNC's can carve shapes and virtually render images similar to a 3d printer. Having said that I should make it clear that I am not in the least bit disappointed with Shaper. My attitude changed though only after I began to use it. The main reason is that Shaper is the most brilliantly executed tool I have ever used. Let me qualify this by saying right off the bat that if I did not have workstation I probably would not think this. This machine will not replace my router table, CNC, jointer, chop saw, planer, bandsaw, chisels, lathe or palm router or any other tool I have. These tools all have their place. Shaper however accomplishes something that I have struggled with. Beautiful, elegant and imaginative joinery and hardware. Virtually any hardware is now a walk in the park. Any joint is possible. Any detail you can imagine. Let's also add how quiet it is. I hate being in the room when my cnc is running. This thing is so quiet and dust free you don't even think you are cutting sometimes. I am sure some people want to know if Shaper could replace other tools and stand alone in a shop. I don't think so. Sure you can cut out parts and with an infinite amount of shaper tape the world would be your oyster. This makes possible detailed marquetry and inlays on a broad scale. And perhaps if you wanted to do that, you could build a business around Shaper. For me Shaper is a precision tool and in a woodworking shop there is always the need for that differentiating detail to make your work stand apart. Shaper does not want to automate woodwork, it just wants to enhance it.

      10/10 can confirm that Shaper Workstation is WORTH THE WAIT (but we do recommend pre-ordering EARLY)! And we don't even refer to it as "Vertical" Workstation anymore, as Workstation is designed to handle so much more than just vertically-oriented end-grain cutting. We'll post more videos of workholding with the Shelf - the height-adjustable surface for fixturing small or difficult-to-hold workpieces. Even holding long stool legs horizontally for mortising operations into the sides, is a piece of cake!

  • @citylockapolytechnikeyllcc7936

    I'll take 150 open top boxes like that..... 4"X 8 X 3" ! Seriously, most awesome development in putting the capability of large, stationary equipment into a on-the-work-piece or on-site work environment. I have never seen a double dovetail.... that is purty! As a locksmith, I need the ability for the tool to work around right angles, for mortise lock and trim preparations, so I can make complicated preps on a door as a single setup, and not 3 separate ones. I called about it, but company declined to discuss such things.

    I love the idea of just having a perfect workstation. I'm curious what the precise benefits are over the DIY versions though. Accuracy, stability, does it store better, etc?

    • @nhannguyen-sr9vh
      @nhannguyen-sr9vh Před 4 lety +1

      accuracy and stability shouldn't be any different because origin uses the actually wood piece as the reference point. only for anal retentive OCD people who can afford $450 IMHO.

    • @Shapertools
      @Shapertools  Před 4 lety +6

      Many benefits, although we are also happy to see Origin users "roll their own" work holding solutions. Shaper Workstation aggregates all of our experience and learnings from years of home-built fixtures, and introduces high-quality and precision-manufactured components for the ultimate out-of-the-box setup. Lots of small, but highly useful, details. One example is a height-adjustable locking "shelf" for with friction-adjust setting built in, allowing easy and fast setups with just the perfect level of friction to not require a third hand. Another example is the ability to perfectly align the cutting surface with the ShaperTape plane, utilizing the Support Bar - Andy is doing this at around the 15-second mark. The permanent and durable ShaperTape surface is pretty awesome, as well. Workflows become much easier when you're able to repeatably register designs with materials over and over. We will be releasing more videos and photos highlighting various features in the upcoming weeks - check us out on Instagram as well @shapertools. I hope this helps!

    • @Shapertools
      @Shapertools  Před 4 lety +16

      @@nhannguyen-sr9vh hmmm we wouldn't say *only* for OCD people. Probably also for anyone who would prefer to spend their time building projects instead of jigs, not to mention the fact that there are actual, significant, material costs associated with fabricating a DIY version. But hey, here's the best part. We still provide FREE plans on ShaperHub of the original "Vertical Workstation" for anyone who would prefer to go that route. And many other Origin users have shared their own derivative designs as well, also on ShaperHub. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing!

    • @McGinnisArtistry
      @McGinnisArtistry Před 4 lety +8

      Here is my perspective on making versus buying the vertical work station. I made one as soon as the plans came out. I bought materials specifically as suggested from the proper vendors, etc, and used 14-ply birch plywood. Got the nicer clamps, etc. But the plywood consistency was not perfect, and though it is a nice jig, it cannot compete with the precision of the new Workstation. There seem to be so many well thought out details that I noticed after watching the video 6-7 times. Like others said, the video does not have the level of information I normally desire, but then I am a detail-oriented person, as most Shaper users surely are. The price is almost inconsequential. It took me several hours to build the jig, and the cost of materials ($92 birch plywood, $49 clamps/track, $25 Delrin rods, + Shaper Tape) was not trivial. All said, including my time, the jig would have cost $391. So yes, with all the new well thought out features, I am going to buy the new Workstation... especially since early buyers also get a Systainer, making the jig actually cheaper than a home-made version.

      Good question! We used to hear this a lot when we first started out years ago. Since December, 2018, Shaper Tools is part of the TTS Tooltechnic Systems group of companies, along with Festool, Sawstop, Tanos, and more. We're here to stay, and ShaperTape will not become unobtanium. Realistically speaking, users never consume as much ShaperTape as they imagine they will. And with system accessory products like Workstation (with the durable, permanent ShaperTape sheet), running out is even less of a concern. Hope this helps alleviate some worries. Thx!

    Always interesting, but I do find it curious that you chose a project that Leigh and Incra have been using for at LEAST 30 years (banded dovetails) to demonstrate their products. Their much less expensive products. The ones that use a regular router or router table. I'm sure this thing can probably do stuff that their products can't? It might be good to do THOSE things, as opposed to demonstrating parity at 3x to 5x the cost. New folks may not see it, but ANY remotely experienced woodworker is going to dismiss this demo because they have seen it hundreds of times with those products in the past.
    Are the existing products I mentioned a pain to set up? Yep. But I would imagine that creating the programs for this one is just a different flavor of setup pain, along with putting down the tape, setting bit depths, etc. I really do like the innovative notion of the tool, but you really need to differentiate in order to justify the higher costs.

    Remove the steppers, and the need for advanced motion systems. Charge more money, and call it state of the art.

      It is incredible how far from the truth this video really is from the actual time and money it will take you to make this haha. I have a shaper origin and by the time you read all the directions, watch all the sessions, get the bits, figure out the ACTUAL process to cutting these dovetails, you could have spent 100$ on a flat saw and coping saw and made a hundred boxes before you would ever make a single box with origin. DO NOT BUY AN ORIGIN! Do not let this 4 minute video fool you! I did and I regret it tremendously!
