Why You Should Not SETTLE for Sudden Classes [Native Camp] | NO to SUDDEN CLASSES - Work Smart!

  • I love Native Camp, I always have! Despite the cons, the bad reviews from other teachers and my own set of bad experiences, I still personally believe that this is one of the best ESL companies especially for Filipinos.
One thing I dislike about this company though is the sudden classes. Sadly, many teachers settle for Sudden Classes… accepting php55 for a 25 minute class instead of the usual php 80-104 for booked classes.
On this video I will be sharing with you why you should aim for regular // booked classes.

This is my conclusion, NC must change the way they treat sudden classes. It supposes to pay teachers higher rates because since it is a sudden class the stress it gives you for the less preparation for the lesson and for newbies like me it jeopardizes the quality of the class we give to our students. And one more thing, since students pay lower for it, they will most probably prefer it.

Agree. Hopefully, they'd look into this and offer higher pay for such classes.

I have a question, if you have a sudden class but you leave at the beginning or in the middle of the class (for example if you end up with a connection problem that leads to your account leaving the classroom) will the money go back to the student? (Or if the class ends in the middle, will the money for the time left go back to the student?)
My account had a bug and the website ended up cancelling the sudden class from my side. Also I once changed from "standby" mode to "not standby" and only after the website changed my status did it tell me that there was a student trying to join my class (I could tell because there was a new "message to student") So basically we had 0 minutes of class together and I'm really hoping that it didn't cost her anything!
So do the students have to pay for the time they spend in class or do they have to pay prior to the class?

Hi Teacha Karen, remember I commented on your previous video that I don't like sudden classes? To my surprise, I received a "feature tag" last Feb 1. Although I only conducted 4 sudden classes and never conducted any classes after that, but still I'm thankful for the opportunity given to me by NC. So after receiving the tag I opened slots for this week. Today was supposed to be my first time to conduct a booked class. However, my student suddenly cancelled the lesson 30 minutes before the time. So I just closed the slot and didn't open slots anymore for today. Tomorrow will be my second day of teaching in NC with 10 booked slots. Still, I'm not 100% sure if that's a good thing. I have a bad feeling that some students might still cancel the booked class last minute and I don't want to be disappointed that a booked slot will end up to be a sudden class. Tbh, I'm confused with the system. For me, sudden classes rate is so unfair. I read some comments and vlogs that they say "sudden class" is life in NC. I also checked the ranking that even famous teachers and top 20 ranking teachers get mostly sudden classes than reserved classes. I saw many famous teachers conduct 400+ classes a month and only 65 out of 400 classes were reserved. I think only Shine enjoys the 99% booked classes. Hehehe. For me, sudden classes are more difficult to teach than a booked a booked class because of the lack of preparation and familiarization of the lesson. That's why to get a rate of P55 minus 10% tax is so not worth it. I'm not the best teacher and I have so much more to learn and improve. However, I tried to give my best in all of the lessons I conduct. I just feel frustrated and sad that why the teacher's rate must suffer for the same quaility teaching we provide. More power Teache Karen!💜

I agree with you that's why, sudden classes are a NO for me LOL. Too much effort but too little pay...doesn't make sense?
For booked classes, when they book you, they trust you and they want to try you for "free", no need to think they will cancel, there will always be people who would want a free class :)

Thanks Karen. Your videos are great. I have a pew questions that I hope you can help me with.
    1. When I book hours are these hours only available for bookings?
    2. Do I need to click the standby button for standby lessons?
    3. Do I automatically go on standby if I don't have bookings?
    4. How far in advance do students need to book?
    5. Can I cancel slots that don't' have bookings? If yes how far in advance can I cancel infilled slots?
Thanks for all of you help. I would really appreciate a video showing the platform and what we need to do in the first lesson.

      1. These are open for booked classes and sudden class (though for you to get a sudden class, you must CHOOSE to go on standby after a booked class let's say. So if not one books your slot, and you do not go on standby, you won't get a class.
      2. yes
      3. no, you do this manually
      4. they can book you 30 minutes before the time slot
      5. yes you can cancel 30 mins before without penalty as long as it's not booked.

Well, thank you so much for using my email address. It takes a while to build your reputation in Native Camp, give it 1-2 weeks. Unlike other ESL companies, your booked classes just come because there is NO option for sudden classes. Here we have to convert the sudden students into regular students.
Make sure your self introduction text, photos and video are also convincing and they'd really be able to market and promote you.

I think you can put more information in your text introduction, for example, you mentioned that you have lived in the UK for 28 years. Or where you have been worked in before. The richer the content, the more attractive it will be for students. I'm not Japanese, but Japanese will be stricter than me. Best wishes.

      Good day!
I'm the kind of student you mentioned.
We students have to pay a monthly payment of 6,480 yen a month even if taking no lessons.
I suppose most students don't want to pay the additional booking fare.
I've become a regular student of some teachers by challenging their sudden lessons every time!
The teachers and I always get so happy if I win the competition for their sudden lessons. lol.
Developing teacher-student relationships might be more difficult than taking booking-only teachers' lessons.

@@TeachaKaren Well, I don't know for sure, but, it seems home-based teachers can control their slots a bit more flexibly than office-based teachers!
The slots being seen to be already booked, sometimes aren't booked actually, because of the teachers' health conditions or other reasons.
So, I can challenge their sudden lessons by chance.
If you do it kindly for me, I would challenge your sudden lesson! Teacher Karen! Hehe!

@@TeachaKaren I just meant I was not financially a rich student. But as you mentioned, I just want to learn English from the appropriate teacher to me without additional payment.
And I'm fortunate that I can learn from my favorite regular teachers by their sudden lessons.
But, when I fail in the "Get-A sudden-Lesson" competition consecutively, I use service coins given from NC by joining NC's CZcams quiz. lol
At last, I mostly agree with your lecture in the video.
My case might be a rare case.

If teachers in the Native camp refrained from holding sudden classes, it would compel students to reserve their spots in advance. Encouraging sudden classes only fosters a habit among students to attend without reservations, rather than promoting proactive planning.
