    God I love this scene; Rose gazing up at the Statue of Liberty, a symbolic representation of Jack, the man who freed her, ready to begin a new life, a life of making each day count, and never letting go.....

      The most unrealistic aspect of this movie: Rose starting as a woman of privilege with servants and deciding to give it all up for a life of poverty. And this was in the days before women could vote or get an education, so god knows how Rose made it on her own. I know, it's just a movie.

    This is the best scene in the movie imo... Rose looking up at the Statue of Liberty, which symbolizes the freedom that she has finally gained after a long and arduous struggle, with the help of Jack's love (which gave her courage), and the disastrous shipwreck (which gave her the opportunity). She has finally broken away from her abusive fiancé, her controlling mother, and the life of aristocracy which was nothing but a cage to her. A new life of being an independent and free person awaits her. So inspiring and so moving.

    Hands down, this is one of the best scenes in the entire movie! There's so much emotion in this short scene. Rose can't believe that she's looking at the Statue of Liberty and that she made it to New York when so many others didn't, it's almost like she's saying why am I still alive? How did I survive? And the obvious one being that Jack isn't with her, and the only life she had known would be gone forever. Disowning her mother, leaving Cal, and starting a new life in America.

  • @qothrunnada9660

    she took Jack's last names, Dawson 😭 it's so emotional

    • @royhetharia2816
      @royhetharia2816 Před 8 měsíci +3

      There are two reasons why Rose took her last name Jack,
      1) Because Rose really loves for Jack. If it wasn't for Jack, Rose would have lost her will to live under the pressure of her selfish mother and cruel fiancé, Cal. Until she decided to commit suicide by jumping off into the sea at the stern of the Titanic. Plus, Jack had fought to save Rose from the death, so that Rose could survive during The Titanic sinking. Therefore, Rose decided to change her identity to "Rose Dawson" as a form of Rose's official marriage to Jack. Even though Jack was no longer with her and didn't even have their wedding directly in front of the altar in the Church.
      2) Rose fakes her death by changing her identity or name to "Rose Dawson" instead of "Rose DeWitt Bukater" so that Rose's mother and her fiancé Cal while check the name list of Titanic survivors, can't find Rose's name because Rose has changed her last name so they both believe that Rose has died or gone missing along with the passengers of the ship who didn't make it to safety in the froze of the Ocean. Without Rose having to worry about being searched by her mother and Cal so she could be free from her own family's prison and also be free to enjoy her peaceful life like a bird flying freely in the wide sky.

    • @loganbigmo
      @loganbigmo Před měsícem

      @@royhetharia2816 That 2nd point is brought up in the movie. Earlier on in the movie, before Old Rose meets up with the salvage crew, one of them does background research and says "Rose DeWitt-Bukater died on the Titanic when she was 17. Rose Calvert, used to be called Dawson, was an actress in her 20s." as a way of saying that "Rose Calvert" must be an impostor. But the interesting thing here is that through quick research he immediately discovered that Rose DeWitt-Bukater died on the Titanic at the age of 17, which means her name & age was on the public victims list. So yeah, Rose Bukater was legally considered to have died on the ship meaning her mother & Cal would've believed her to be dead.
      However the thing that's funny is that Rose mentioned wanting to become an actor and in the final scene, we see her photos next to her bed, showing that she did all the things she told Jack she wanted to try, including being an actress. Rose was 17 in Titanic, and according to the movie became an actress in her 20s. Her mom & Cal would've still been around then (Especially Cal, since we know he didn't die until 1929). Kinda interesting that she didn't become noticed by anyone when she became an actress, especially because she would look the same & even have the first name, and Cal and her mom would recognize the last name Dawson.

      Jack Wilkinson Truth be told I initially though she did that because she missed him, until some people on here pointed out that there’s a deeper meaning behind the name change. She took his surname not just to honour his memory, but also as a means for her to escape the shackles of her overbearing, materialistic mother, an arranged marriage to a snobby, abusive man, the oppressive nature of the aristocracy, as well as having to pay off her father’s debts, and start a new life doing what she really loved and being the person she always wanted to be.
      It was a very smart move by her. Had she given the officer her real surname, she’d end up reunited with her mom and fiance and would continue to be oppressed by them and the aristocracy, or she’d be left to shoulder the burden of paying off her father’s debts.

For example, if Jack survived with Rose and they arrived in New York Harbor, they would both have run away from Rose's mother and her fiancé, Cal and the two of them could start a new life in America even though their lives were in poverty and their finances were not sufficient, but at least they can still live a life together like doing farming like "Harvest Moon Back To Nature" and already have children and grandchildren just like Rose's granddaughter, Lizzy

She looks like a shell of a human being and yet at the same time she looks very strong. Most people would be broken after experiencing such loss. Jack was the love of her life, after all. But she told him she would never let go. So she doesn't. She honours his memory and lives on.

    I don't know if everybody here would agree with me but just this short scene here makes me feel so emotional and the fact that Rose say to Jack "When the ship docks, I am getting off with you" which didn't happen. It would have been so romantic and less emotional if that really happen. Even if I just watch it last night and my first time watching it. It's really hard for me to move on because of Jack's death. I just can't.

      When i first watch it in '97 on the couch in the projectxt of chicago with my family. I cried when jack died and my mom reassure he will be back, and that reassurance was at the end when rose saw everyone and jack at the clock and kiss him and everyone, i think cal too was clapping.

    I always thought of this as Rose looking up at the Statue of Liberty, thinking about how she made it to America.. and Jack didn't. They were so close to making it out/surviving and starting a life together when the ship docked. Which is why she decides to take his name at that moment. Symbolically taking him with her. That's reinforced by how Lewis says "We never found anything on Jack. There's no record of him at all" right after this. She took his name so that there would be SOMETHING of Jack to carry on. Also, to signify her new life. But, yeah. There are a lot of layers to this film and I love reading everyone's thoughts! 💙

    Many would not know but this music depicts hope and human spirit. This music conveys 'no matter what happens, life must go on'. It's too sad that Jack couldnt make it on that sinking night and dies though he leaves Rose with a reason to live, a promise to abide and a life full of freedom. That's the reason Rose stares at Statue of Liberty when she arrives New York and instead of telling that man real name, she chooses to add Dawson to remind herself of the very promise, a new & liberal life and the sacrifice Jack made for her. It's a beautiful film with tons of hidden messages.

    Rose looking at the statue of liberty is good symbolism.
    The statue obviously represents freedom.
    And Rose looking at it symbolises her freedom from her mother and Cal as she can now live her own life which she does like she promised Jack.

    Despite the fact that this scene was 30 seconds, I blubber like a baby! Rose Dewitt Bukater -- I mean, Dawson was an independent woman of her time. She was tired of having her life planned out by her abusive mother, Ruth, and husband-to-be, Caledon Hockley! She took charge of her life and kept every promise that she made to Jack. I cry every time I see this scene! She got to New York, and now she is going to commence a brand new life as Rose Dawson and throwing away the "Dewitt Bukater" name which is a great start to living her new life! I would have loved to see her and Jack together and starting their future together!

      I don't think Rose's mother was necessarily a villain. She was a product of her breeding. She was dead-ass broke and had no way to make money for herself. She had no education or skills or any work experience. So strong-arming her eligible daughter into marrying a multimillionaire was really her only course of action. Of course, she is fictional so we never know what happened to "Ruth Dewitt-Bukater" after the sinking. My guess is, she would be taken in by wealthy friends who pitied her for losing her daughter in the tragedy.

    Jack represented a part of Rose that dared to break away from the life she had known. It wasn’t that Jack was someone she would have lived happily ever after with, it was just he inspired her to leap into the unknown after having her whole life planned out for her. The destruction of the great ship was the end of the world that Rose had known and she finds herself ready to make her own way in the world.

      That is what is called a sacrificial death so that Rose can live freely without being restrained by her mother and her fiancé Cal even though Rose is not with Jack, because Jack died for Rose, so that Rose can experience Jack's free life in America because we all know that America is a free country and also the Statue of Liberty that Rose sees is a Symbol of Freedom just as she is freed from her glamorous life that meant nothing to Rose.
